Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2020.
Located just south of Allentown, Pa., Locust Valley Golf Course is less than hour from Philadelphia and the Poconos and only 15 minutes from the New Jersey border. The course is player friendly enough for high handicappers to approach with confidence but there are a few challenges in store as well. The 6,504-yard layout is a manageable length but there are still a few holes that will test your distance. The terrain is mostly flat though there are a few subtle contours that can be tricky. The fairways have a lot of variation with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are tighter and demand greater accuracy. You'll also have to watch out for the occasional water hazard. Locust Valley is not the most challenging golf course in the area, but it's one of the best values you'll find in town.

Terrific Old Style Golf Course
This is a real Gem. A once private CC, now Public, with all the charm of a Country Club in a Public Course. The REAL Sin is .....it's CLOSING !! Yep ....for real this Time. Insiders tell me September is when it closes ...to become Houses !!! The new Management Group who "saved" this Course from it's last closing, have done wonderful things in helping Locust Valley recover it's fabulous, challenging Country Club style. By now, it's in amazing shape and if you haven't played it yet, you're missing out !! HURRY !!! There's only a few months left !!
Good course for mid handicaps
I have always enjoyed playing here, the greens and fairways are usually in good shape. The tee boxes are fair and the bunkers could use more sand but that doesn't knock their score down much, its an enjoyable round most of the time. My lone complaint is to invest in marshalls, on more than one occasion we have played 5 hour + rounds due to slow play and in some cases excessive alcohol consumption on the course (only adding to the slow play).
Dan’s Review
The course was in good shape and greens were excellent.
Best public course in the valley
Excellent condition lots of sand in the traps a must play course if you never played it or haven’t played it in a while Well maintained
Closing?? Or not closing??
The public can’t be sure if this is the last year for Locust or not, but like when the Stones announce the final tour, we want to play the course one final time!
I ‘d say skip the urge and play somewhere else. Locust has certainly seen better days. They are obviously not putting any more $$ into the course. The bunkers were never great there, but now they are just dirt. Snack shack is never open and the pro shop is empty.
Have Fun
This is a course for all types of players. Challenging and fair, the course is in very good shape and even though the weather was overcast and misty, the greens were fast. Excellent price through GolfNow mskes it even better!
Not worth the drive
if you live near the course (boonies) maybe it’s worth it on a weekday when it’s dirt cheap, but on a weekend i would not drive up here again (friend drove so thank goodness). I live in blue bell and boy it’s a drive, the pace of play is horrid, have hackers everywhere, i hear fore every other min....go somewhere else....really isn’t worth your time.
Not for weekend play
Have played few times before but this weekend they really loaded course up and was over five hours!! Pin placement was extremely difficult. Would only recommend playing during the week if you don’t want to wait.
Could be great, but steer clear if it's recently rained.
Second time playing this course. First one was during the winter early last year and didn't expect much. Now over Easter it looks like they lost a ton of trees due to the soft ground here. The place is a swamp and doesn't seem to drain very well. All the greens are very soft. May be better in the teeth of the season but I'd be wary of any sort of moisture.
It could be a really nice course if there was a little time and money spent to put in some good drainage and do the work that needs to be done to clean and dress the fairways. Most were wet, but 18 was unplayable. I hit a drive to the middle of the fairway and wasn't able to dig the ball out of the mud hole it made.
On a dry day it would be fine but we got some rain yesterday afternoon and it's nowhere near drained yet. I like the layout and the greens have challenging slopes. Bunkers are taken care of as well so that's a plus. It's not worth $48 holiday in it's current condition when compared to other courses I've played in the area and definitely shouldn't be on full rates right now, holiday or no.
Great round for the weather
Love this course! Will be very sorry to see it turned into another housing development. Play this course while you still have the chance. Layout is great for players at all levels. As for this round, well.... we played at the end of January so of course it was cold. Recent rains and freezing temps left the course as hard as a brick. Literally had to hammer the tees into the ground and rolling approach shots as they would bounce off the green like a cart path if they came in from a lofted approach. Iced over sand traps and ponds made for interesting play. Again, what would you expect at the end of January. Had a great time!!
Dave
I have played at Locust Valley many many times in the past. It's always nice to come back to play a round. The pond at #9 I could do without. Something about water I guess.
Nice Course for Fall Golf
This is a nice course for a round of Fall golf. The staff is friendly and accommodating, and the course is in good shape for this time of year. It is laid out nicely, and it moves. I've played it twice this month, and I'd go back again if the weather permits. Unfortunately, the most recent round ended early (after 12) due to unexpected rain/wind, but it was a fun afternoon regardless. I'd recommend this course to my friends.
Pleasant enjoyable Round of Golf
I was a little concerned after pulling into the parking lot, and then hiking to the small unassuming Pro Shop to check in for my round. However, check in went smoothly, and i was off to the tee box. Pace of play was great only slow down occurred during the last few holes as we caught up to a slower group, but not too bad. Course was fairly straightforward with only a few tee shots to a sloped fairway. Greens were a moderate speed with a few challenging pin positions. A regular that i was paired with gave me some help reading some of the putts which was spot on and helped me sink some nice putts. Bunkers weren't raked and had standing water in them. Overall need to hit fairways to score well. Played Blue tees around 6250 yds with temps in high 40's. I will be back there during warmer weather.
