great course, warrant the slope
The greens were extremely slow and needed work. however, Philmont always present a tough challenge and warrants the 133 slope. The roughs were up and all fairways roll to the rough so expect a tough round..esp in the wind.
Neat concept for getting the balls out of the cup.
Incredible layout and scenery, terrible greens
Was really excited to play here as it is private and not far from me. Awesome staff, very friendly and helpful. Property and layout were incredible; lots of very tall old trees and no two holes felt the same. With that being said, the greens were in absolutely terrible condition. Squares of sod everywhere, some with chunks missing. The actual grass they used on the green felt more like a really nice fairway. Massively disappointed as the $80 price tag had my expectations sky high. If you have money and don't really care, would recommend playing it once just for the overall experience. If you have limited golf funds like myself, paying $80 or $114 for a round here will probably just drive you crazy.
Terrible shape for a private club
The North course used to be one of the best courses in the area with lightning fast greens and a thoughtful layout which emphasized the importance of short play around those greens. Unfortunately apparently they had an issue with a fungal infection on their greens a few months ago.and now these are some of the worst greens I've ever played on. They rolled at about an 8 on the day I played ( used to roll at 12 or 13) and there wasn't a smooth green on the course They must be losing members like crazy. Philmont used to be member owned but was recently sold to Concert Golf, I can only assume that corporate incompetence was the cause of the death of this once proud course, an absolute shame. Of course there was no mention of the awful course conditions by the staff. $80 down the drain.
Worst private course greens I have ever played
I booked this tee time to take my father to play a private course for the first time in his life. I told him how the greens would be in great condition and far better than any public course that he normally plays. We normally wouldn’t spend 75 dollars and drive an hour to play golf but I figured because of the conditions it would be worth it. I was completely wrong. The greens were worse than any public course that I have played in a long time. They clearly hadn’t been cut in days, and some were missing patches and were so bumpy that we had to move our balls to the other side of the green to be able to putt. I have no idea why anyone would pay for a membership with the conditions like that. Highly, highly disappointed in philmont .
Old School course
Played the course as a guest in a tournament. The course conditions were great the greens ran true and the tee box and fairways were good. The layout is up and down hills with a few blind shots and a few huge elevation changes. Lots of old mature trees to get in your way if you are not hitting it straight. 18 and 9 are big sweeping doglegs right. Not a fan of either holes. The staff was hit or miss. The kid at bag check and running people back and forth to there cars was great the people in the pub area either didn't want to be there or didn't want us there don't know which.
old school golf
Private, but if you get an invite or opportunity with an outing, even if it's a scramble, take it. It is old school golf with false fronts and sloping undulating greens over natural hilly terrain. Some holes you need to see to understand where you can hit to. Not everything is as it appears standing on the tee. Greens are great and roll smooth but not always easy to read subtle breaks. You'll remember the ninth hole.
Long par 70.
This old course maintains teeth to take a bite out of you. There are a number of blind tee shots which always creates tension. It's a long 6300 yards from white tees with only two par fives. Hilly terrain and severe sloped fairways are a theme and twice had shots hit green only to watch them roll off the front. Putting was smooth as once you got the pace all you had to do was put it on the right line. The breaks were often more than they appeared. If you get an invite you need to accept.
disappointed
Although a private members only club I had played this South course several times in the 60's when I worked as a valet parking cars at the club. It is a short but strategic and well laid out golf course but the conditions were ragged. The greens putted OK but the fairways were bare and washed out in places and there was no sand in the bunkers. An employee told me "I don't think they really care about the South course." There have long been rumors that parts of the property will be sold and now with new ownership it appears likely to happen with potentially nine holes of the South course to survive after the 18th hole of the North course is reworked. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable day in a fund raising scramble. Four over 70 guys scored 66 on this par 70 track.
The only way to play.
Played as a guest in a foursome. Grass driving range. Separate chipping green. No excuse " I wasn't warmed up". Beautiful layout. Tree lined fairways, but not too narrow. Some of the long par 4's required 3 shots for me to get to the green. Just not long enough. Greens in good shape. True rolls. Fluffy sand in most bunkers. Bring your "A" game. Great pace of play. Just wish I could go back.
