Middletown Country Club
About
Middletown Country Club has been one of Bucks County's major golfing destinations for more than a century. Originally designed as a nine-hole golf course in 1913 by Scottish architect Alexander Findlay, the second nine was added three years later. In the many years since opening, the golf course has undergone renovations by both George Fazio and Stephen Kay. This tough course is proof that a layout doesn't have to be 7,500-plus yards to be a challenge. Although the Middletown C.C. golf course plays to a seemingly modest yardage of 6,217 from the back tees, the rolling terrain provided by its location in the scenic Neshaminy Valley makes the course seem much longer. The small greens have plenty of undulations and you'll also be faced with a variety of uphill, downhill, and sidehill lies. There are also towering trees looming above the fairways and water comes into play throughout the golf course as well.

Very disappointing
The course was in awful shape greens were bad and the distance on the card did not match Tee boxes were bad. We were very disappointed
Course in Bad shape
The course is in bad shape. Temporary tee boxes and greens, grass and greens in bad shape. The course has gone downhill since last year. A shame

Stay away
I've been coming to Middletown for years, and certainly do not expect Augusta when playing. With that being said, I have never stepped foot on a course that is as poorly maintained as Middletown currently is. Tee boxes are unrecognizable, covered in weeds and sand and grass no where to be found. Greens have aeration marks and hundreds of unfixed divot marks. The fairways look like they were cut with a mower with a broken blade, as there are some spots of grass over 6 inches high in the center of fairways. I've never seen a course with multiple fairways roped off due due to the burrowing wasps. Some greens have sod laid that never took, is currently dried out looking like driving range mats, and has 2-3 inch gaps between pieces- this means you can land a ball on the green and be sitting between 2 pieces of sod that are both sitting about an inch higher than your ball. It's literally impossible to fairly score a round here.
It's a shame because this course does have some history and can be challenging when in nice condition, but it is beyond playable at this point.

"greens"
Price is insanely high for a course with a few really fraudulent greens and poorly maintained fairways. Byrne's is a far better value for the money.
Hello, leaferguy. Thank you for reviewing the course. Your feedback about the price of our course is important to us. We always want to make sure we are offering golfers a competitive price for their round. It is our goal to give visitors the best chance to get out and play more. Thank you for playing Middletown Country Club. We hope you'll check out our specials and we will see you again soon.
Course in miserable shape
I don't know what happened during the quarantine but this course is in awful shape. To charge $60 at this dump is ridiculous. John. F Byrnes is in better shape than this course. Fell off big time. Was in much better condition last year.

A Shame
I've been playing Middletown for 20+ years. The time has come and gone for the benefit of the doubt. I understand golf course economics are tough and believe Middletown is doing the best they can. Enough is enough though, the course is in terrible condition. You can't expect to play a fair round of golf given the current shape of the course. Course has great bones and great history. - a gem of a design that forces you to play golf, not just grip it and rip it. The conditions have always been questionable, but playable. In my opinion, the conditions have deteriorated significantly. I sincerely hope management is able to make improvements - i love Middletown and it will always have a special place in my heart, but my money is better spent elsewhere for now.

Crappy
Lots of crab grass
Tee boxes in horrible condition
Greens were not just aerated, but rather destroyed and covered in sand by aerating
They closed 4 holes and then only allowed us to play 14 because when we went back to play 4 extra holes, it was overcrowded

Hot summer fun
Old girl hanging in there. Greens are smooth and true some hot spots but nothing terrible. Fairways are perfect but to be honest tees need some love but the place is getting played. Always a challenge, dont let the yardage fool you. Great day as always and a very Professional staff

$45
$45 is the most they should be charging for this course right now. I've always liked the course but the conditions are deplorable. Bad greens and weed infested tee boxes. I play twice a week and have played several different courses over the last four weeks and they are all in way better condition. Hopefully it will recover in the fall but for what they're charging there are too many better alternatives

Hello,
Thank you for your review. We understand that there are some issues that need to be addressed. Our small greens and tees have seen 4,400 more rounds played from May 1st-July 31st than in the same time frame in 2019. Our greens are being aerified tomorrow and Tuesday (8/3-4) and we are planning to spray out the tees shortly thereafter. The recent heat and humidity combined with too much rain in a short period has made it tough to spray without adding to the turf stress level. This will all be addressed weather permitting within a short timeframe.
Don't Waste Your Time
Once an interesting course, now very underfunded and consequently in terrible condition. Temporary green, tee boxes bare of grass, some tee boxes without markers so folks drive around wondering where to tee from. Staff mowing dressed like they were at the beach. Three fairways roped off due to significant infestations of burrowing bees.
Too bad a century old course has deteriorated so much.

Good bones, but course is in terrible condition.
Interesting layout with plenty of elevation changes. Difficult to find a flat lie in the fairway at times. The tee boxes were terrible, 10/18 greens were in poor bumpy condition (like putting on gravel). And beware the cicada killer/digger wasps on the back 9 - they've nested in the fairways. Course is not worth the regular fees, probably would play again if <$35.

This response is directed at the last two reviews. The Eastern Cicada killer nests in this area every year and unfortunately, there is no chemical legally to kill them. They do a number on #18 specifically, but we have roped several fairways off to control cart traffic as those fairways tend to stay wetter than others, The tees and greens are showing the effects of 4,400 more rounds from May 1st-July 31st than in the same time frame in 2019. Small tees and greens are not designed to handle that kind of traffic, especially during times of heat and humidity (20 days above 90 degrees in July). The architect and design firm that built #11 and 13 greens has installed the proper exterior drainage and needs to return to install interior drainage as there was a flaw in the way those greens drained. They were perfect during the dry months of May and June. The tropical storm a few weeks ago showed the drainage issues with these new greens. We are aerifying all greens tomorrow and Tuesday (8/3-4) and the collars, approaches, and tees will be sprayed with a herbicide as long as the temperatures are not too high. Spraying herbicides during high heat and humidity would cause additional issues. It is our intention to have back in condition that we expect shortly.
July Scorcher
Course holding up well, Fairways and greens in great shape considering the conditions of the last three weeks. Very hilly course offers some very challenging shots into small rolling greens. Bunkers could use work but there has been ongoing improvements over the last few years. Will definitely be back
Thank you for sharing your 5-star experience. We look forward to seeing you again at the course soon! Thanks for choosing Middletown Country Club.
Never again
This course is terrible. The tee boxes are rocks and crab grass. The fairways are covered in hornet nests and hornets. The greens are slow and poor maintained if they’re intact. There are 2-4 holes that have been shortened and the green is at the end of the fairway which means terrible putting conditions and a hole that is 3x the size of a typical one. I will never recommend this course to anyone, nor will I be returning myself. Not worth my time or money.

kassgroves,
Thank you for your review. During these hot days, we are trying to mange our water supply with greens, fairways, and tees in that order. The superintendent does not want to spray the tees heavily right now with a herbicide due to the stress on the turf during this heat wave. Regarding the two new greens on #11 and #13, we have been experiencing drainage issues with them since the recent tropical storm. The architect and the contractor crew that built those greens this winter were here on Monday and Tuesday installing drainage, hence the need to make temporary greens in play those days for their safety. We were at the mercy of when they were available and we anticipate those greens coming back nicely as the initial design was excellent. Regarding your comment on the fairways, you may have seen the annual Eastern Cicada Killers that seem to show up annually at this time of the year. These are digger wasps that are harmless to humans but attack the cicadas every year. There is nothing legal that can be sprayed for them, but the good news is that they will be gone in a matter of a few weeks.
