Middletown Country Club
About
Middletown Country Club has been one of Bucks County's major golfing destinations for more than a century. Originally designed as a nine-hole golf course in 1913 by Scottish architect Alexander Findlay, the second nine was added three years later. In the many years since opening, the golf course has undergone renovations by both George Fazio and Stephen Kay. This tough course is proof that a layout doesn't have to be 7,500-plus yards to be a challenge. Although the Middletown C.C. golf course plays to a seemingly modest yardage of 6,217 from the back tees, the rolling terrain provided by its location in the scenic Neshaminy Valley makes the course seem much longer. The small greens have plenty of undulations and you'll also be faced with a variety of uphill, downhill, and sidehill lies. There are also towering trees looming above the fairways and water comes into play throughout the golf course as well.

Decent course but green too slow
I have played this course numerous time as it is 10 mins. from my house. The course it on the expansive side for what it offers. The greens were not cut and pressed and this is disappointing as I was expecting nice fast greens. But overall it was OK because the the price I paid through Golfnow.com made it fair valued.
Worth $20-$40 not much more
The course was not maintained very well. Tight and people were crawling all over the place.
Very tough course
I played Middletown for the second time and just knowing the course I played better.
Add 5-10 strokes onto your normal score due to difficulty.
I used a hot time Golfnow deal and got a great price, although the price at the course for a senior is very reasonable anyway.
The good:
Very welcoming and friendly staff including the golfshop, starter, rangers, refreshment stand, bartender, and cook.
Greens were in great shape. Very fast.
The not so good:
No sand in the bunkers. Was like hitting off concrete.
Many tee boxes were beat up.
Some barespots in fairways.
No even lies on the fairways.
Plays very long.
If you are above the hole it's very easy to 3 putt due to the slopes and speed. Very hard to read.
I missed the first 6 short putts 3-5 footers for par. There are no straight putts
All in all, had a great day and enjoyed the course and kept wondering how they played this course 100 years ago with the clubs and balls they had back then.
Good experience
I enjoyed my first round at Middletown. The course conditions were pretty good for April. Greens are very challenging and in good shape. The staff are clearly prepping for the season; cart rules, roped off areas that are seeded, and using white spray paint around other areas that couldn't be played on. They care about the condition of the course. One concern was coming up 18 there were lots of young children yelling from the clubhouse and it was pretty distracting. Otherwise a good experience for a short but solid value course.
Short but still challenging
I like Middletown and have played it a few times over the past couple of years. It's relatively short from the whites but the rolling terrain, both on the fairways and greens, makes the course pretty challenging.
Poor Condition for Typical Price
I was sorely disappointed in the course conditions when I played yesterday, even considering that we are still in the early stages of the season. GRAIN OF SALT: 1st time at the course. I know it is early in the year, but this is the 5th different course I have played already and this was easily the one in the worst shape. And it isn't even close. There were TONS of dead pan lies all over the course, especially around the greens. For the amount of snow we had this winter & the recent rain we have gotten, that simply shouldn't happen this time of year. No reason for the course to be baked out already. Same with the bunkers. It was like hitting off cement. Greens were up and down - some were in fantastic shape for this time of year, others needed a lot of work. I booked last minute as a Hot Deal on GolfNow so my round was very cheap, but no way their normal rate is justified based on what I saw. Also, I waited for several minutes in the pro shop upon arrival while the woman finished what was clearly a personal phone call before being checked in.
Otherwise, the elevation changes/blind shots that this course presents create a difficult yet course, and I really enjoyed the overall layout. Despite the conditions I was very pleased with my score; there are lots of holes that if you can hit the right shot shape, you can really go low. Nice mix of short/long par 4's. I would play from the back tees though if you are a longer hitter as the par 5's are almost too short otherwise. Pace of play was great; it was midday on a Monday, but I breezed through the course (playing alone) in 3.5 hours, never once had to wait or play through someone. I will reserve final judgment and play later on in the season when they have had a chance to improve the shape of the course. But based off of my round yesterday, there are other courses in the area I would choose that are around the same price point but in better shape.
Good course
We had to wait an hour due to frost but apart from that we had a good morning of golf. The course is in good shape for this time of year. The turf is v soft in some areas, but most of it was well marked and had free drop points. The greens were painfully fast and tricky. Id play here again no problem.
Poor Scheduling
Course management here have no clue how to schedule players on a golf course. I arrived to find a fair amount of people on the practice green. I walked into the pro shop and paid and there was no mention of a delay. I hit a few balls, putted a bit and then went to check in with the started. He informed me that they were running 90 minutes behind due to frost.
Now I'm not a meteorologist but I'm guessing its pretty easy to assume early morning frost in early April. So why schedule 7am tee times and throw the whole schedule off. An e-mail, phone call, or mention of the delay would have been nice so that I didn't waste an hour of my day.
I asked for a refund and it was given.
Great course for the money
Had a great day of golf here at Middletown CC. Course was in good condition considering the winter we had! Greens were challenging and ran true, can only imagine how they would be in the prime of the season! Had a group holding up about 6 foursomes in front of us which made for a five hour round but other then that had a good time here! Will be back.
Great course
This course was in fantastic condition. Some really aesthetically pleasing and challenging holes. Great course close to Philly. Highly recommend.
Not a long course, but a smart challenging course for par 69 for white, and 73 for ladies. You will feel always welcome by friendly staff.
You will feel always welcome by friendly staff. To feel confident on the green, you should visit the course a half dozen times in consecutive weeks. It is a very smart course.
Great Little Layout
I always try to find time to play the course at least yearly if not more. Dan is a great guy and the course seems to be always well maintained.
Has a great pro shop
Course had a lot of leeves even on fairways you had a hard time finding your ball, spent more time looking for everyone ball.
greens were extremely challenging
The course is in great shape and I had a wonderful time!
I would recommend the course to anyone as it well deserves your play . Thsi time of year every hole is magnificient and picture perfect .
Super Fast Greens, Challenging Holes, & Good Value
Had a great time playing the course my only complaint is they ran out of $1.00 hot dogs on Sunday!
Terrible condition
While the greens were actually in decent shape for the most part, the remainder of the course was awful.
The fairways were dried out and patchy.
The tees were just as bad only cut shorter
Despite the friendly staff would not play again
Ok for the price
The course is very tight. No level fairways as it seems your always playing a hillside lie. Also the fairways in many places had little to no grass on them. I will say while the greens are very challenging they were in great shape.
Worth playing once.
The greens are very good. The oveall course needs work. It is a leased track that needs some money put into maintaining the fairways. Apparently the irrigation system is broken with no plans to repair/replace.
It is worth playing, at least once.
Classic course (1913)
The starter couldn't have said it better, "It isn't a long course but it isn't an easy course." All the putts drop toward the railroad tracks wherever they are. The first couple fairways run seriously left to right. Some of the fairways have suffered in the heat but the greens were soft and receptive. The place is now 101 years old, an Alex Findlay production so my suggestion is that the next group road trip should be to another Findlay, Manor CC. It's like hunting down Chagalls in museums. It's another Findlay course but Manor is short so it's generally women friendly... and it's just past Stoudt's Brew Pub!!
So back to my golf resume, Middletown is all over the place with distances. Like #16 is 455 yards, finishing over a pond to a green that's pretty well protected with not just the water but bunkers too.
The very next hole is 252, arguably also a par 4, at least it says so on the card. I got to 17 feeling like I'd been swinging lead bats all morning. The previous four par 4s were (in order): 440, 422, 430, and 455. So I take out driver, come down about an inch on the shaft, and I hit it about as well as I could ever want. My partner and I watched as the ball laded on the front of the green and rolled right at the pin. It rolled and rolled and rolled... went right past the pin and stopped about 5 feet directly behind it. I could have had my albatross and my ace in the same shot. I missed the eagle putt and tapped in for birdie.
Had not played Middletown in 20+ years but it was all I'd remembered.
Greens OK but fairways and tee boxes need work.
Wasn't the worst course I've played this year but remember it being in better shape last year.
