Slow Rounds, Subpar Conditions
I've frequented Triggs for many years, playing here every other week during the golf season due to its convenient location. While I don't usually leave reviews, a string of subpar experiences going back a few years has prompted me to share some thoughts.
On a positive note, course conditions have improved a bit over the years. Most tee boxes and greens are now above average, and the fairways are decent. For a public course, it's mostly playable, and the design is great. The biggest course-related issue for me is condition of the rough, which has deteriorated significantly over the years. Once you leave the fairway, the terrain is hard dirt with sparse patches of grass. This has been a persistent issue, unrelated to weather, and it won’t improve without a massive investment given the scale of the problem. The bunkers are below average but most have noticeably improved over the years.
Pace of play is another area where Triggs struggles. Rounds often stretch to 5+ hours because the pace isn’t managed. The 10-minute tee time stagger sounds reasonable in theory but essentially plans for 3-hour rounds. In practice, this leads to constant backups and maximized revenue for the course. There is typically one ranger on the course, but they rarely engage with golfers to keep things moving. This is especially important given the tee time intervals. Singles often squeezed in between groups, exacerbating the pace issues.
The city recently renewed Triggs’ lease, prioritizing continuity over accountability. Past performance suggests that significant improvements are unlikely.
Always issues
Course under construction. Bring bug spray, they disturbed from all the work being done. Pro-shop constantly has checkin issues, never rangers and starters don’t do anything except check if you paid. Pace of play always is an issue, I go because of location, that’s all. My friends won’t play there, always a hassle. Never has had good course management and maintenance.
Over booked
Very slow. Everyone should be required to ride on weekends. No rangers. I keep trying here hoping it gets better. Maybe better management could help. Time to move on.
Distracting Day at Triggs
Not an enjoyable day at Griggs for me. Trees being cut all over the course with trucks and noisy machinery near tee boxes and blocking views of greens. Branches and cut down limbs laying in play just behind 10th green so lost a ball on that hole. I'm a single who got paired with a elderly couple who played very slow because poor man could barely walk. Why didn't course give him handicap privileges? I only played 10 holes and paid for 18. That bad!
Fast Greens but True
Great layout. Pristine course conditions, rivals any country club. Greens are beautiful and roll true. A true test of golf!
Very nice course
Very nice course. Was a little challenging , but Had a fun day out there!
Love triggs!
Great layout, beautiful greens, bring the driver! Love this place!
Played front 9. Nice course
Walked the front nine on my birthday. It's a nice course to walk because it's mostly flat. The course is in good shape. Be careful of tall grass around bunkers. I want to check out the back nine. I'll be back for sure
Triggs is a great in city municipal golf course. Fun Donald Ross New England type layout, and the greens are typically well maintained! I've shot 72 to 82 here, so it's very fair, but can be challenging if you don't play well.
My only real complaint/suggestion is that they have a ranger that tries to keep play moving. Too many 4.5-5 hour rounds here!
Fun times
Met up with some friends for the back 9. The back really favors my swing being lefty and the dog legs left. The greens were tricky with pin placements but made very interesting. Really liked the course and wish I had time to get the full 18 in.
Ranger needed!
Beautiful day, great course spoiled by VERY slow play. When we started our round there was a one hole open in front of the foursome in front of us! At the turn there was a 4 hole gap and by the end of the round a full seven holes open because of the slow play by the group in front of us! No golf ediquette at all! They need a ranger to keep the pace and not allow this to happen. Don’t know if I will go back unless this is fixed! Sadly they were members and regulars!
Great Ross Municipal Course
Has to be one of the best 6500 yard courses in the country. These greens and green side bunkering are pure diabolical Ross.
I highly recommend playing for the Ross enthusiast.
