Woodlands/Lakeside at Shaker Run Golf Club
About
Shaker Run Golf Club offers 27 holes of championship golf that are played in three different 18-hole combinations. The Woodlands/Lakeside Course is the club's original layout designed by Arthur Hills. It was later joined by the gentler Meadows nine. Since opening in 1979, the Woodlands/Lakeside combination has come to be known as one of the best courses in the state. It features challenging elevation changes that are rare for a golf course in Ohio as well as several doglegs and numerous sand traps strategically placed throughout. As the names would suggest, there is also an abundance of water and trees on the course. The fifth hole on the Lakeside nine is Shaker Run's signature hole. The tee box sits nearly 100 feet above the hole and plays into the prevailing winds. It's tricky but if you play to the right of the green, scoring par is definitely possible.

#9 Lakeside Photo submitted by stover3928 on 10/18/2012
Really poor course management
Played early on a Saturday Original 18 lakeside to woodlands. First 9 went fine, not crowded, good pace, but surprise! made the turn, and there were 5 foursomes ahead of us now ! HUGE change of pace, got really, really slow, took 1 hour to complete the first 3 holes. It's because their 'new' way of filling up the golf course that allows for multiple tee times from different starting locations (they charge also more depending which course you play/start from). We played the most expensive Original 18 only to get bumped back at the turn with players that were starting their round there. Looks like this guys are getting a bit too greedy trying to fill out every tee time at the 3 9 hole courses regardless of how packed it will get with groups running into each other... We also found out they had the course packed because they had an outing starting at 1.00 pm. On a Saturday.
Interesting day
I was informed that paying only $25 entitled me to 9 holes of golf on the course. Should have been 18. Tried to argue the point but got no where. Play 9 and contacted Golf Now and they handled the situation and the course contacted me to fix it above and beyond. Love this course!!!!!!
Beautiful Course Design that needs some TLC
I hadn't played this course in about 2 yrs because many of the Woodlands' greens were burnt out and crusty. I absolutely love the Arthur Hills design ... challenging and scenic all in one. However, while the course is in better shape overall, I was disappointed with the current green condition. Bumpy and brown spots on 95% of the greens on both Woodlands & Lakeside which resulted in inconsistent speed. This is unfortunate because it seems that the weather this year has promoted excellent condition on most Cincinnati / Dayton courses. Finally the bunkers hadn't been raked in quite a while which made for difficult shots.
This course is overpriced for the condition of the greens.
Liked the challenges of Woodlands course but the greens were not in very good condition. Went at 2:00 on Monday and there was hardly anyone there. Counter workers seem at a loss anytime I've been there about rates and how to put points on the 59 club cards. Don't like the new set up for bag drop off. We still had a good day!
Definitely book on GolfNow
Awesome course, in great condition. Pretty challenging. Excellent value if booked on GolfNow or another discount tee time site. Very friendly staff.
6-somes allowed and diseased greens
1st time back to shaker in a few years. Played Meadows to Lakeside 2p Friday tee time. Bunkers were unplayable (rocks/hardpan). Several diseased and dead spots on greens. Got stuck behind a 6 some on the 3rd tee on Lakeside. Called clubhouse because we would have never finished, it was around 5 and weather was threatening. We were on 4th green and one of the threesomes (now split up) confronted us from 6th tee. They were complaining, upset with us, asking what the big deal was, asked if we had to wait, belittling golf rules and etiquette. I was SHOCKED, first at their attitude and behavior and second that Shaker allowed this. After our round I called and left my name and number for the manager. I have not received a call back to this day.
To summarize, if you want to play on diseased greens and play behind 6-somes, then Shaker Run is the place for you!
Shaker seems to have slipped a bit.
Course was ok. Not the Shaker Run I played before. No ball washers or trash bins at the tee box. Greens need work. No filler on carts to repair divots. Looks like they are cutting corners.
Poor management
Just finished a partial round at the original course. I say partial because because we had to or would have waited 1 hour on 3 tee of woodland. We played lakeside in 2.25 hours which was perfect. Made the turn on to woodland with no wait. Then for some reason it backed up. There were 5 foursomes waiting at 13 tee box. You do the math how much the wait would be. Clubhouse was called and someone did come out, but gave no explanation. We asked for some compensation, but got none. Not even a beer. We will not return to this course and will not recommend to friends. Poor management and ruined a beautiful day. I should have taken my $50 to the casino instead. People were waiting for golf carts at the clubhouse just to get started with their rounds at 11am. I have never seen this happen on any course in the 30 years i have played. Go play somewhere else.
Not worth the money
We had a coupon for Meadows to Lakeside but decided to pay extra for the original course...Was disappointed - NO BALL WASHERS - TRASH CANS - SAND TRAPS BELOW PAR.
Use to be a very nice course now average. Not worth the $50 - Not even close!
Where's the management
We called before we played and asked for rental clubs. When we got there the clubs were old and not cleaned. There was no markings at tee boxes or on the scorecards on distances or course layouts. There wasn't a cart person until hole 17 and we only saw one restroom on the course. When we went to the clubhouse at the turn, they had no gatorade, bottled water or snacks. The course was beautiful and challenging, but no one seemed to be running the asylum. Do yourself a favor. If you're in Dayton skip this poorly managed pretty course.
Great course but upkeep dropping
I always enjoy playing this course. Every hole has its own personality and it is never boring. There is a good variety of water and sand hazards without it being overwhelming. My only complaint is that they are pricing it as a premium course yet they have no water, trash cans, or ball cleaners on the course. They took these up sometime over the winter and never replaced them. That makes no sense. Also they had nobody watching the course for slow play. They seem to be cutting back dramatically on staff.
Very nice course...amenities, not so much
First time playing this course and I was very impressed with the excellent condition of the course. The course is right on a man-made lake so I don't think watering the course is ever an issue. Fairways were in good shape and greens were very fast.
A couple of things seemed to be missing from the club, though. Firstly, the pace of play was pretty dang slow. Not once did we see a ranger moving around the course or pushing people along--it's always frustrating to be pulling up to a tee box and the foursome in front of you is lollygagging on the fairway ahead of you.
I also found it odd that there were no trash cans, water, or ball cleaners on any of the tee boxes on the course. Our playing partner mentioned that to the starter since he had played the course before and he said he thought it was because they wanted to "give the course a more open feel." That's almost laughable--it was like 90 degrees out and although it didn't affect my round and it was better than having bad course conditions, it would have been nice to have the water for sure.
Another weird quirk about the course is all the flags are all BLACK...meaning that if there is a wooded area behind the green, you have a really tough time seeing the pin. There were a couple times coming in from our second shot that it was really tough to tell where the pin was located.
All in all, pretty nice course and decent club--but for $65 greens fees one would surely expect some of those simple niceties that even municipal courses provide.
Great course, good value
Great value. Only downside was no starter and no water on the course, which is tough in June. We had a foursome two groups ahead that held up everyone, and no marshal to move them along. Our cooler from the clubhouse was a bag of ice with drinks thrown in . So the experience didn't match the level of the golf course, which is very good. Scenic and challenging but fair. Drove right by 2 wild turkeys coming off of #7 on Woodlands.
Shaker
Great personality in pro shop. Young lady was one of the nicest employees I've come across in a long time.
The course is back
Started on the original back 9 (Woodland I believe). Course was in top shape. Plush and green where it is supposed to be and the greens were fast, smooth and receptive to moderate to high spin rate shots. There was no trace of the damage the course sustained two years ago on the original. We made the turn onto one the "new" 9's (Lakeside maybe). This was in good shape but did have some rough spots marked for repair. Greens were in good shape but the bunkers could use a little work. They were very shallow and packed hard. All in all, got a flaming deal so it was well worth it. I was skeptical after playing it during the down turn when it had the disease or fungus but worry not, it is in great shape.
Great Experience
Most beautiful course that I have played on in Ohio.
Fairways and greens were in excellent condition.
Still on the mend, work to be done
I was pretty pumped to play the Shaker Run Original 18 this year to see how the the new ownership improved it. I was disappointed. The greens looked to be punched late last year and still not recovered (or filled with sand), the bunkers were untouched from the winter, and their were piles of taken down trees / chopped wood everywhere.
Staff was awesome and very friendly, but there is still tons of work to be done on the course. I will give it a few more months before I check back in with them.
HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!
Decided to take the plunge and play the "Original" at Shaker while it was only $20 through GolfNow. After reading alot of negative reviews it was with great relief and surprise that the course is in such excellent condition. GREAT job to the grounds crew and new owners. Woodlands was in great shape as was Lakeside although it was a little wet underfoot and the grounds staff werent able to get rid of all the leaves etc without damaging the course. Reg golf now price of $45 is a little steep for this time of year. But great signs for a stellar 2014.
Top SW Ohio Course
Was aware coure was aerated. Heavy aeration project on greens. Lots of work clearing ash trees. Not good for a competetive game right now but will be pristine in spring. Play now to enjoy the layout.
Took photo of wild turkeys. Had never in my life seen them in a natural setting.
