Great for the money
Course was in good condition taking into cosidering we are in a drought.
Good Deal for the price
Overall the course was in good shape with the exception of a few greens that had some bare spots due to disease or fungus. I played as a single and was sandwiched between a tournament group but was able to jump around a few holes to avoid getting hung up. However, since I was familiar with the course I was able to complete 18 holes in a reasonable amount of time.
Nice course for a great rate
Course is in good condition considering the drought and the GolfNow rate was great
Great course, great condition
Colonial is always a great course to play. Barry does a great job keeping the tee times on time and pairing singles and twosomes up with others. Great opportunity for singles to meet new playing partners. Will definitely be back and take advantage of the weekend hot deals.
Best bang for buck
Semi cheap for a great course! Lack of a driving range is the only drawback
Golf Course with Pride
I enjoyed my time on this golf course. I'm in Huntsville temporarily and going around the area to play some golf. Colonial golf course had its 50th anniversary last week so I heard. Both the employees and the members seem to take great pride of the golf course. They dedicate each hole to a member that have recently passed or for donations.
Anyways, as far as the golf course, I try to go out early in the morning so I can have my afternoon. The GolfNow had $18 for 8am. So I expected some traffic. The members were in front of me and I guess they play regularly around that time on a Sunday. I ended up with two five-some groups in front of me. Yikes! BUT they played quick for a 5-some. I was actually surprised. They were held up by a foursome in front of them who looked like they were just starting golf.
The conditions were nice. The greens were consistent. The golf course did seem to struggle a little bit to fund their projects, which can be seen on a few spots on the greens/fairways/roughs. But overall, it did not bother me at all. I'm not registered for GHIN, but I consider myself a scratch player. I enjoyed it. I think players of all levels will enjoy it. I played at the white tees because my riding partner was playing it. I didn't mind. Different tee markers, different challenges. I think I took irons off the tee on half of the holes.
Greens: a little flat overall, but it is challenging for majority of the players. couple of small dead spots, but no major issues. Consistent. I'd say it was about a 9 or 10 that day. Started out with a 8 because of dew.
Fairways: consistent height throughout. There were hard spots here and there mainly due to no irrigation on fairways. But I was impressed they were able to maintain the fairways like that without irrigation in Alabama heat.
Roughs: they keep it fluffy enough to get beginners in trouble. I had a few times when I walked right over my ball.
Bunkers: I was never in the bunker, but it looked okay. Probably need a rake or two more per bunker because people tend to get lazy if the rake is on the other side...there aren't that many bunkers on the course.
Layout: Front 9 is straight. Not too much trouble unless you hit it behind a tree somewhere. Back 9 is a little more challenging with narrower fairways and couple more holes with doglegs.
Staff/Atmosphere: again, this course celebrated its 50th last week. The staff are very-friendly. So are the members. They're like cracking old folk jokes and laugh. They're having fun, which was important.
I'll definitely be back to play another round or two before I leave the area. You absolutely cannot beat the round for how much I paid.
Colonial
Great course with a friendly attentive staff
Play through
Several foursomes ahead of me and my son. We were able to play through three of them. Friendly staff and members.
Good Value - Great Staff
I've played Colonial many times. It's an easy course best suited for 15+ handicappers. The staff is wonderful and I always feel good about supporting them. The course was in pretty good shape given the harshness of AL summers. The pace was slow on this particular day. There were several groups of 5 that backed things up. I understand 5 people wanting to play together, but they have to allow faster players/groups to play through. Thus, my only criticism on this day was there wasn't a marshall to enforce basic golf etiquette. Colonial is a good value and fun.
Always a good experience
I haven't golfed since neck surgery several years ago. I used to play Colonial regularly and thought it would be a good course for my first time back. It's not going to wow you with spectacular views or require a lot of imagination but for a bogey plus player like me it presents a moderate challenge without being overly difficult. In my experience the course is always in decent shape and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Depending on what time of day you go, the pace of play is pretty quick. If you haven't been you should give it a try. I've never been disappointed.
Visiting area
Very friendly staff. Joined a threesome.
Only complaint is the tee boxes/holes are not identified. The only way to know your way around the course is by using the map on the scorecard. If the threesome I joined didn't already know the course I would have gotten lost VERY quickly.
good value for a nice course
Keep the ball in the fairway and you will be rewarded. Greens held well on approach shots and putted true on the day we played. Staff was friendly and helpful to first time players.
colonial
Colonial is always fun. Barry the pro is very friendly. The greens are excellent. Course is fairly open terrain but interesting with challenges. Some fairway and tee grasses need thickening but it is only mid-April so give that a month. I wish Colonial had a practice green and a driving range - even a short one.
This course has very little to offer
The course has very little to no imagination. The holes were very simple and little scenery. For the price there are plenty of other courses that offer much better conditions at the same price. It has no driving range and the greens are extremely flat. The part that discouraged me from the course was the simplicity and the tiny size of the greens.
Great features for the price
Enjoyed the round. Fairways and greens are in good condition. Firendly staff.
Traditional old course
Couple of holes difficult to get par on. Relatively open, but if in the tree line, difficult to get par.
Great course
Great course for the price. great staff and great greens
Colonial Golf Course
Good course for the money with good conditions. The greens are smallish but in good shape.
Great Value for Huntsville Area
I have played all of the public courses in and around Huntsville. Colonial is the most interesting and best maintained course short of the RTJ courses at Hampton Cove. There are a lot of locals that play the course regularly and you can get stuck behind a slow group, but that is the only downside. You can not beat the great rates available through GolfNow.com here (shameless plug). I just played 18 with a cart for less than $20 and met two very nice people to boot!
