Good Layout...Terrible Conditioning
This course is down the street from me, so it should be my first choice course when I am looking to play. However, over the past 2 years or so that I have played this course (more than 10 times), there has only been 2 rounds where I would say the conditions were "playable". The most typical condition problems are the greens and bunkers. The greens are typically rolling about a 4 or less on the stimp meter (Ben Hogan would tear these greens up!) or have large areas with no grass and exposed earth; this happens about 50% of the time I am out there. Also, the conditioning of the greens can vary widely between the 3 nine hole layouts, so your front/back nine green conditions can be significantly different. The bunkers are not playable probably 75% of the time; I have seen small trees growing in them and they do not appear to be raked or maintained on any sort of regular schedule. Occasionally pace of play is an issue as the clubhouse likes to over book the course especially when they will host a tournament (tournament players get priority over daily fee players from what I've seen). This can mean you tee off normally and then have to wait upwards of an hour at the turn as they feather you into players coming off of another nine. Also, this course has tons of foursomes scoring in the triple digits who do not play ready golf, but this issue plagues every public course and marshalls appear to have no authority. With the bad, the course layout is fun, varied, and challenging although there are many short par 4s throughout the course that require teeing off with a mid-iron even from the back tees (which can get annoying for better players). The fairways are ample, but wayward shots tend to go into thick trees or brush and make for interesting recovery options. There are also a lot of risk/reward shots along the way and the hazards are well placed. The few times of year that the course is in good shape, I always enjoy my rounds out there and even the conditioning doesn't keep me away for very long as I am always hopeful that they will someday figure out how to manage this course.
Beautiful Day - Good Value
Beautiful weather helped make this a good value. The course was in good condition (greens were a bit slow) but given the damage they had last year with flooding they have done a remarkable job getting the course back into good playing shape. I hope to go back sometime and will definitely recommend this to my golf buddies.
Longwood
Love this course! I had a great time even though it's tucked in a neighborhood, they found a way to keep the courses away from houses as much as possible. The greens were firm and in great shape.
Dusty
Had been quite dry lately so expected it to be dusty and was not disappointed. Fairway grass very sparse even for winter. So approach shots very challenging, easy to hit fat off the concrete.
Palmetto/Pine course
I enjoyed the lay out of the course, it is not a flat lay out course. It is a challenging course, if you want a more challenge just go back at the tee box and try your best. Most fairways have a nice landing area, your second shot can be extremely difficult due to elevation change, the greens were in good condition based on the time of the year(February). I am looking forward to playing the course again. This course has 3, 9 hole courses, each hole has a large detailed picture of the hole with measurements at each feature i.e., bunkers, water, tree cluster, front and back green. Two of the courses are intermingled but the directions are good and easy to follow, just watch for signs and arrows.
The employees were all friendly and I met one starter that had work there 23 years, which says a lot for the owner. I liked the course enough to join their Loyalty group which gives you a discount on the course, driving range, and merchandise in the club house.
Longwood Friday 11/25
Course was wet and overbooked never saw drink cart
Thursday afternoon
A lot of standing water due to rain. Would love to play it gain when it dries out. Nice layout
Good conditions
The course was in pretty good condition from the tee box to the green. There were some areas roped off but for the most part it was all good. The fairways were playable.
Floods and take your own water
Nice layout but the course floods with little rain and all the bunkers are full of water. Saw the beverage cart come around 1 time on the front nine, so bring your own drink also they could use more water stations. Pro shop staff is rude.
VERY Poor Condition!
I have been playing Longwood for 20+ years. I have been a member off and on for the past 5 years. I played the Palmetto course today with my daughter and the course is probably in it's worst condition EVER!!!
We decided to play it since we live close and my daughter only plays 9 holes at this time.
(Still charged $21.95 for a 12 year junior player.....what a joke)
The guy at the Pro Shop gave me limited info when I ask how the condition of the course is. He said; the course is in pretty good shape, but some of the sand traps are under repair. He said thet are still repairing some things since the floods back in May.(4 months ago.....)
I have played Municipal course in better shape....The price that they are charging are ridiculous ........ $50- $70 prime time and $35 after 3pm.....
Couple years ago when I met the new owners, they said they were investing over $3 million in renovation....they rehabbed the restaurant and bar and forgot the golf course upgrades. And of course - increased food and drink prices.
If you want to waste your money at a VERY POORLY kept course....play at Longwood.
Nice layout, bad drainage
I enjoyed the layout. The fairways and greens were good. The rough, sand traps and tee boxes need work. The course had heavy rain the day before but the drainage system was not able to handle it. Lot's of standing water on the cart paths. Over all it was ok for the price of $52.
On the Decline
When I first moved to the Houston area 2011 and started playing golf regularly, this course was in pretty good shape back then and they cost was reasonable. However, over the years the course conditions have been on the decline, while the prices have be on the raise.
I play golf every weekend and I use to play this course about once a month, but now I'm reluctant to play there because of the rate, and the conditions of course, especially the greens. Of all the courses within a 10 mile radius of Longwood, they have the worst greens by a mile.
We had fun.
Longwood is one of my fav courses. Of course, after the flood, it was damaged a bit, but the staff are freaking awesome. I'll def go back.
one last try, epic fail
Had not played this course in a while and was thinking it may have improved under new management. I was wrong, it actually got worse.
Staff was incredibly rude (pro shop) and unprofessional (cart barn/maintenance guys driving up to tee box instead of waiting another 30 seconds while I am standing there trying to tee off), course was in horrible condition, no cart girl mid-late afternoon (3:30-4:00) with crowded golf course and 100 degree weather, food in restaurant was below average at best, it was a free for all on the course with people jumping all over the place - had 2 groups show up out of nowhere in front of us only to disappear to another 9 a hole or 2 later and 2 groups and a single pop up behind me (the single showed up in different places 3 times while we were out there). I was playing as a single with my wife riding along, so there was no way any group of 3-4 would have caught up to us.
Horrible experience; will never go back.
First time at Longwood
Pines was closed down for repair, should be opening back up. My only gripe about this course was the bunkers. From my understanding they're going to work on them next. Lots of standing water and just bad bunker conditions overall.
