Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa - The General Course
About
The General at Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa is the most well known of the resort's three championship golf courses. It has been ranked as one of the top 100 courses in the country. The rolling, wooded hills provide a dramatic setting for the course. 250 feet of elevation changes provide stunning views of three different states: Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The layout features tee boxes carved into hillsides and rolling fairways bordered by tall fescue and heather. Try to build up your score with the par 5s and par 3s while handling the tricky par 4s cautiously. The signature hole is the 14th. There is a 180-yard elevation change but it is still rather playable since it is a short, downhill par 4. In addition to the three championship golf courses, Eagle Ridge offers a nine-hole course as well that has the same great conditions and design.

This General is 5 Stars!
All of the Eagle Ridge courses are fantastic and fun to play, but The General remains the crowning glory of Galena. I played The General many years ago and finally made a trip back specifically to play this course. Known for its difficulty, The General provides tremendous experience from all of the tee boxes. However, if you are visiting Galena and are not a serious golfer, stick to the North and East courses because the General and the South courses are far more difficult. The views are stunning, the greens rolled perfectly and were very fast which I enjoy (some may not) and we played early so the round was fast. No hole is alike with undulating fairways and dense brush, but if you are able to hit the fairway you are left with a chance at par, but birdies are rare. Some holes plunge hundreds of feet down into the forest, some bend around some water and through limestone bluffs. We played at 7am and morning sun was just spectacular...bring your camera and your A-game, you'll need it. This is truly one of the best courses in the Midwest, and perhaps the country. The General is well worth the price and it is a round you will never forget. This is golf.
Great Course
The General was a great course with lots of variety in holes. Only complaint was that greens were a little slow. Oh and plan to bring a couple extra balls
challenging
this course is very challenging. the views are awesome i'm looking forward to golfing here again this was my 1st time playing this course.
If you love elevation changes then this is the place for you!
Great mix of left to right and right to left holes as well as downhill and uphill shots. Greens roll very true and hold really well. Some of the tees were a bit over used but overall this is a great golfing experience.
The General deserves five stars !
Spectacular course from start to finish. Great elevation changes and superb conditions. Very challenging course with no two holes alike. Bring your camera as most holes are worth a photo stop.
tests your every shot, great course
Target golf for the thinking player, in every aspect, from tee to green. Not for the faint of heart. Keeps you thinking, from the #1 tee, to the 18th green. Fantastic.
Great course
A must play if your in the Galena area recommend best ball if your golfing with couples you'll enjoy the course more.
Quite Tight
This course is challenging. If you like a high risk high reward course this is the course for you. It is a very tight course. If you have a hard time staying in the middle with your tee shot you better bring about a dozen balls. The greens run fast and true. This course has multiple holes that have elevation changes including their signature hole 14 which is 18 stories above the green. This course is incredibly beautiful with trees throughout the course at one point you can see three states Iowa Illinois and Wisconsin from the tee box. Only downfall of this course is as there is no driving range at the General we asked the attendant when we first got there there was a range and she said no we don't have one at this course. Great track!
If you like variety, you will love this course!
I really enjoyed playing this course. The scenery and the views were extraordinary. Club selection was challenging, at times, given the changes in elevation...numerous uphill and downhill shots. I would expect to score much better the next time I play it. The heat index on the day I played The General was +100. A staff member (I think he was the marshal) made it bearable by providing all golfers on the course with an ice cold towel. In fact, he came by a couple of times to refresh our towel. How nice was that? The only slight negative on the day was the pro shop staff. I felt like we were "bothering" them, especially after our round.
Absolutely Incredible, just one issue...
It goes without saying that The General is one of the top 5 courses in the Illinois/Indiana/Wisconsin/Iowa area. Each hole is truly spectacular and the layout is second to none for a Midwest course. The only issue, and it was extremely obnoxious, was the amount of bugs. On a couple of greens, it was so bad that our group simply picked up our balls and drove to the next hole. Apparently the course has some kind of solution that you can apply to your clothing to keep them away, but we didn't receive this message until after the round!
Other than the bugs, our experience was A+ quality. The staff and course conditions were great, thank you!
Very challenging
One of the best I have ever played. Challenges every part of your game.
Beautiful Course
Had a great time at the General. Views from the tee are amazing. Bring a lot of balls though because there are many tight tee shots.
Well worth the drive
The General is one of 3, very nice 18 hole courses at Eagle Ridge. Considering the early season conditions and the recent heavy rains, the course was in very good condition and will do nothing but get better.
Using Golfnow made the round very affordable and I'm using it today on the South Course.
One criticism: if you like to hit balls before playing, allow enough
time to go to the North Course and pay for range balls.
spectacular views
very challenging course especially if you miss the fairway.elevation changes on every hole. Scenery is outstanding and of course was in great shape would never get bored playing this course.
The General-a WOW course
Fantastic course. Challenging with many elevation changes and greens that are very fast and true. The scenery is amazing. Only downside on this day was a large group way up in front of us were allowed to slow the entire course down. They were playing together in a very large group. Should never be allowed especially on an upscale course like this!
beautiful course
pro shop rude and not helpful. on course staff could not have been nicer or more helpful.
Beautiful course with superb Fall color changing views
One of the most fun, interesting, and challenging course I ever played. The eye-catching panoramic view is simply the best part of Fall golf game. It was definitely money well spent. Strongly recommend to golfers to visits Eagle Ridge Resort for a round of golf game.
Absolutetly beautiful for its scenery. A very challeging layout, but fair.
The staff was outstanding. The golf was great. I was 10 minutes late for my T-Time and they welcomed me graciously and got me out without delay. I am a 16.2 handicap senior golfer and had a good game from the senior tees. I would recommend this course for golfers who want to play one the premier Midwest courses. It is challenging, but fair and probably one of the most beautiful you'll ever see in the fall.
Beautiful views but overpriced
Matt, the starter, was the only friendly employee. The course was in good condition considering dry weather. There were some beautiful views but overpriced. The employees inside did not treat my wife and i friendly at all did not even greet us!!! NO WARM FUZZY FEELING!!!!!! very disappointed in club house closing at 6 p.m..there wasn't any sign stating that otherwise I would have shopped before my round which was done after 6 p.m.. The prices they charge for greens fees they must not have needed my money! Overall a nice course but I have played just as nice for half the price. If it was not for GolfNow I would never have golf there.
Thanks GolfNow, Don
