Pine Forest Golf Club

About
Built by Don January in 1979, Pine Forest Golf Club in Bastrop, Texas provides a true golf adventure through sneaky elevation changes and red bluffs, with blind tee shots and holes along the Colorado River. No. 3 is a picturesque par 3, playing 170 yards downhill, with a green framed by the red bluffs. On no. 6, keep the tee shot right to avoid a blind second shot, and watch out for the tough, two-tiered green. The seventh hole plays along the Colorado, and is protected by a massive cottonwood tree on the left. On the back, make note that the highest point on the course is the 11th green. For the home stretch, make the most of the two downhill par 3s. No. 12 plays 180 yards and you'll need to leave it below the hole. The 16th hole is longer at 225 yards and is protected by a beautiful oak tree on the left.

Can't wait for improvements
The clubhouse folks said there are improvements coming, and that by this time next year, it will be "a new golf course"--that's good, because the existing one needs SO MUCH work. Many greens were bumpy and sandy; sand traps were crusty hard; fairways were often dirt. I look forward to the "new and improved" version in the future. It is among the cheapest rounds of golf around, so we'll probably try it again from time to time, but am tempted to just wait a year.
Renovations
New owners took over and are making changes. The fairways and greens are in horrific shape! It’s like playing on the surface of Mars! While I understand they are renovating the whole course and water is an issues at the moment, they should advise you of course conditions at check in! Had we known how bad it was we would have saved our money.
This course needs a lot of work.
This course once was a great place to play. But has gone downhill very fast in the last few years. Needs lots TLC. The staff members were very helpful and friendly.
Worst course ever
I have been playing golf for over 45 years and even the goat ranch in college had better conditions than this course.
I have ayed this course in the past, over 10 years ago, and it was a gem. There is literally more grass in these pictures than on the entire course. Only 1 green was completely covered with grass. All the rest were so sparse the ball would bounce around when putting. Even the practice tee was like a beach.
I hope someday this course will come back to what it once was. I will closely read the reviews before booking here again.
First time, last time
The course really is in as bad of shape as the reviews say. You bounce your golf clubs out of the cart going through the sections of missing grass in the middle of the fairways. There are some holes that only 40% of the fairway or course has any grass at all. Same for some of the greens, including he one with track marks from a backhoe on it. All of this would be forgivable, if it were not for the people. We had a old lady waddle across the fairway at 18 as we were teeing off. Literally just walked across it. Then freaked out when we hit our ball (as we had not seen her). She then goes to the driving range to tell her husband, who proceeds to try to hit us with golf balls from the driving range. He would not come over and talk to us, just scream from a distance. We called the clubhouse and went inside to talk to them, and they never even went out to have a conversation with the guy. This place clearly just...does not care. It is reflected in the course and the staff attitudes. I would not play this course again if you paid me.
Still good winter golf
Maybe I’m just a positive person, but I don’t think the course is in that bad of shape for January. Sure, there are some dead patches in fairways (but hardly any in landing areas) and the greens aren’t great, but it’s winter. That’s to be expected. The ladies inside were very friendly this time and the pace of play was great.
Horrible
In my 55 years of playing golf, I have never played a worse course; fairways looked liked they had been bombed. Greens were basically weeds mowed. It is to bad because overall all course layout and contour is good and has great potential if someone just cared about conditions.
For $15-40 if you can’t come out here & enjoy the views/drink a few beers and have a good time you’re in it for the wrong reasons. The chance to get away from Austin crowds and the views alone are worth that, if the $15-40 is an issue for you then you’ve likely picked the wrong hobby.
Has lots of Potential ..... But
The course has lots of potential but if you like manicured greens and smooth fairways this course is not for you. Some holes has mud holes in the middle of the fairway where a perfect drive can get sucked up. There does seem to be some work on clearing areas and the front 9 appears in better shape compared to some holes on the back 9. The layout has nice elevation changes and overall we were encouraged by some improvements, although on some greens we just played a 2 putt rule because of the conditions.
Why?
It’s sad to see a course like this become unplayable. The owner is more worried about what the pro shop and snack stand look like but could care less about putting a dime into the actual product itself, the golf course. I have played here all my life and these last five years have been the absolute worst of it. They somehow charge over $30 to play here with all of the money going to the new amenities in the pro shop I’m assuming. Buy a new mower and roller for Christ sake. Buy some grass pallets and plant some seeds over the course. Colovista is at least trying to get better while this course is just rotting.
Poor Grounds
It was a very tough round to play. The greens were not mowed for a while. The fairways were no existent. You Had to hit off dirt. Would not recommend playing the course. Needs a lot of work to get it back to playable.
Lots of Potential
If you require nice fairways, tee boxes, and greens, this course is not for you. If you don't mind rough conditions and just want to get out and hit the ball, you would enjoy the course. It had rained the night before so that was part of the issue with soggy fairways, but some places had no grass if the fairways, and greens were spotty at best. If they brought sand onto a few fairways to just level out all the bumps, that would be a big improvement.
I could see them charging much more if they did some improvements . So my recommendation is use this for a practice course, not for keeping score.
Challenging
This is a fun course, but by no means easy. Fairways were in good shape. Greens had some patches of crab grass which made putting difficult if you had to put over the rough spots. Overall a good round.
