No priority to play second nine. They shove people in to get as many players on the course as possible.
They were sanding the front nine so they sent us out on the back nine at our scheduled tee time. We followed two men who played in about two hours. We made the turn to the front side and there were 4 foursomes waiting to tee off. The starter said we had no priority and suggested we play the back nine a second time! He explained that since they had finished sanding the front they were trying to get as many people on the course as possible. We went to the back nine and had to wait for a twosome of juniors to tee off. Three juniors were ahead of them about 150 yards from the green when we got there. It took us 30 minutes to finish the 10th hole. We were approached by a ranger and were told that the juniors would be off the course at 3:15. One of the two juniors immediately ahead of us (they were playing the ladies tee) swung 5 times before he actually hit the ball. It did not get any better. The two groups left the course finally and we (a foursome) finished in five hours after a 1 hour and 45 minute first nine. I have not played redtail in a while since it is not uncommon to play the front nine and walk to the tenth tee and see one to two groups that are "only" playing 9 holes. I won`t be playing there soon.
I enjoyed the course, staffs, weather except the score ^^
the greens still healing from punch and
17th green was damaged from mold and fungus,
i like to play again
Nice layout
This is a challenging course and with a nice layout. I enjoyed it here and would go back
Challenging course
Great course for all levels, very spread out, groomed immaculately, and has a great inventory in the pro shop!
course needs some care.
grass is to long on tee boxes.wet soft places on golf course. This stuff needs repaired or find someone new for your maintenance dept.
good and fun course but was slow and delay on almost every hole... :(
otherwise,,, good course..
A Good Day at Red Tail
I had booked a reservation through Golf Now and was able to walk on to the first tee as scheduled. I was paired with a talented young man for the front nine. He knew the course well and offered some key pointers. The back nine was more challenging with two young men who were playing their first round in 12 years. The back nine had more sand and water hazards to spice things up. I enjoyed the course and the company of my playing partners. It was a good outing.
Nobody there...
Crazy... too hot? The course was empty. So weird. The marshalls were great. They are obviously tracking and concerned about speed of play. The staff in the shop as always is either the kids that seem like its their first day or the older guys that act like they are above helping you. Really too bad.
Challenging course
This course has many challenges - water, well placed bunkers, wild rough that penalizes the less accurate shooter. The tee placements help the higher handicap player keep up with the scratch golfer. Other than one badly burned green on 17 (that seems to be improving), the course is in great shape. Enjoy!
Course not in best of shape. It's my understanding that it's is the most played course in the Portland area. For that, course condition maybe forgiven. Layout is challenging and good shots rewarded. Spongy fairways, sand-less bunkers and burnt greens were however a turn off...
Horrible conditions
I live right near this course, and I love the layout. But the conditions are horrible. The fairways were like the rough, the greens were diseased, the rough was splotchy. Everything was full of weeds. This was abysmal. Its such a shame because with some good up keep this could be one of the best courses in the area. As it stands its practically unplayable.
Course Still ReBounding from Winter
I have played this course many times but May 8th I truly experience how harsh of a winter it was and how this course is challenge to properly drain the Pacific Northwest weather. Many parts of the course were completely muddy and swamped. Hole 4 hadn't been mowed in weeks and the entire course had loose grass from the movers which made it very challenging to find you ball even in the fairway. In 18th holes, I lost 4 drives due to plugged balls in the fairway. Greens were bumpy to the extent of excluding any possibility to making a put outside of 15 ft. This was definitely weather related and nothing pertaining to Red Tails consistent challenge and solid layout. Just want to note if you are looking to get out on course to manage your expectations. It is still winter golf conditions for a majority of the holes.
A disappointing day . . .
Even though we paid only $15 for our round(thanks to GolfNow Hot Deals) we only completed 4 holes! Add to that the cost of a cart @ $14/head and this became a total rip-off. The course is a mud pit! Should have known when the starter told us the ROUGH was in better SHAPE than the fairway ... big drainage problems here. Granted the weather here in the northwest has been wetter than wet, but RedTail should be ashamed of themselves. We play in rainy conditions all winter, and no other course has been anywhere near these poor conditions. BOO RedTail.
Poor drainage
I have played this course during the summer and it plays dry, but pace of play is slow.
Granted we have had our share of rain, but this course does not drain at all!
Normally the fairways are some what dry, but Red Tail has no drainage at all
Extremelly poor
Cow pasture surprise
Poor Redtail! This is a municipal golf course. It has a nice driving range with appropriately priced golf balls, a really well stocked golf shop and an excellent teaching staff.
I signed up for the hot price of $15 plus GN fee totaling less than $18 for 18 holes. It was a great value!
It took the person 4 times to ask my name after showing the reservation information on my phone three times and 2 staff members to check me in.
Once headed to the first tee, I checked for score cards at the first tee, none were in the box so I headed back to the shop to get a score card. When I asked where they were I was told , they are normally on the cart. I said I was walking. I also asked if they wanted me to put some out there, trying to be helpful and the staff person said, the starter would do it. I said there isn't a starter. No comment from her, no answer or thanks for the offer. Hmmm, ok. I took my card and headed back out.
Sign says play winter rules. Good thing!
We have had a really wet winter. It has been horrible. The fairways had grass as long as 6 inches in places and the rough was even longer.
The reason I say poor Redtail is they don't control the weather and it has been too wet to mow.
We caught up to the twosome in a cart on hole 5. Watching them look for their balls, then hit 3 balls each on the next par 3 hole. They let us play through on hole 7 thankfully, after we asked them to speed up.
Suffice it to say, the course conditions were rough and understandably long grass. Glad I didn't pay more for this round. It was exhausting pushing my cart through that wet ground.
The course layout is nice but staff is rough around the edges. It has great potential and is in a great location. I don't think I will play there again. The last time I was there it took too long on a sunny day. It is so easy to train the staff to be nice, say thank you, etc. that's the easy part, making it rain less is impossible.
Fun day
I didn't play my best and due to amounts of rain recently the fairways were a bit wet but not terrible. The greens were hard to read do to water but overall it was a typical fall golf day in Oregon. I enjoyed it and for 25 bucks it was well worth it.
Tough challenge
Tough challenge. Course is hard but that's a good thing in my eyes. It doesn't suite my eyes but whatever I still enjoy the challenge. I did set a personal best but I feel I can still go lower on this tough challenge of a course. Made only 1 birdie which doesn't help my cause. Most take advantage of the par 5's on the back. If I wanted to show visitors Portland area courses with bite this course would be one of them. I would include chehelm and heron lakes great blue.
First time on course - glad we were playing with veterans
My friend and I decided to try the course. Fortunately, we were paired with course veterans who counseled us. Otherwise we would have gotten into even more trouble than we did!! Loved the course. Each hole is different. Best advice? Keep it in the fairway, stay within yourself and make good choices.
