Course not in best of shape. It's my understanding that it's is the most played course in the Portland area. For that, course condition maybe forgiven. Layout is challenging and good shots rewarded. Spongy fairways, sand-less bunkers and burnt greens were however a turn off...
Horrible conditions
I live right near this course, and I love the layout. But the conditions are horrible. The fairways were like the rough, the greens were diseased, the rough was splotchy. Everything was full of weeds. This was abysmal. Its such a shame because with some good up keep this could be one of the best courses in the area. As it stands its practically unplayable.
Course Still ReBounding from Winter
I have played this course many times but May 8th I truly experience how harsh of a winter it was and how this course is challenge to properly drain the Pacific Northwest weather. Many parts of the course were completely muddy and swamped. Hole 4 hadn't been mowed in weeks and the entire course had loose grass from the movers which made it very challenging to find you ball even in the fairway. In 18th holes, I lost 4 drives due to plugged balls in the fairway. Greens were bumpy to the extent of excluding any possibility to making a put outside of 15 ft. This was definitely weather related and nothing pertaining to Red Tails consistent challenge and solid layout. Just want to note if you are looking to get out on course to manage your expectations. It is still winter golf conditions for a majority of the holes.
A disappointing day . . .
Even though we paid only $15 for our round(thanks to GolfNow Hot Deals) we only completed 4 holes! Add to that the cost of a cart @ $14/head and this became a total rip-off. The course is a mud pit! Should have known when the starter told us the ROUGH was in better SHAPE than the fairway ... big drainage problems here. Granted the weather here in the northwest has been wetter than wet, but RedTail should be ashamed of themselves. We play in rainy conditions all winter, and no other course has been anywhere near these poor conditions. BOO RedTail.
Poor drainage
I have played this course during the summer and it plays dry, but pace of play is slow.
Granted we have had our share of rain, but this course does not drain at all!
Normally the fairways are some what dry, but Red Tail has no drainage at all
Extremelly poor
Cow pasture surprise
Poor Redtail! This is a municipal golf course. It has a nice driving range with appropriately priced golf balls, a really well stocked golf shop and an excellent teaching staff.
I signed up for the hot price of $15 plus GN fee totaling less than $18 for 18 holes. It was a great value!
It took the person 4 times to ask my name after showing the reservation information on my phone three times and 2 staff members to check me in.
Once headed to the first tee, I checked for score cards at the first tee, none were in the box so I headed back to the shop to get a score card. When I asked where they were I was told , they are normally on the cart. I said I was walking. I also asked if they wanted me to put some out there, trying to be helpful and the staff person said, the starter would do it. I said there isn't a starter. No comment from her, no answer or thanks for the offer. Hmmm, ok. I took my card and headed back out.
Sign says play winter rules. Good thing!
We have had a really wet winter. It has been horrible. The fairways had grass as long as 6 inches in places and the rough was even longer.
The reason I say poor Redtail is they don't control the weather and it has been too wet to mow.
We caught up to the twosome in a cart on hole 5. Watching them look for their balls, then hit 3 balls each on the next par 3 hole. They let us play through on hole 7 thankfully, after we asked them to speed up.
Suffice it to say, the course conditions were rough and understandably long grass. Glad I didn't pay more for this round. It was exhausting pushing my cart through that wet ground.
The course layout is nice but staff is rough around the edges. It has great potential and is in a great location. I don't think I will play there again. The last time I was there it took too long on a sunny day. It is so easy to train the staff to be nice, say thank you, etc. that's the easy part, making it rain less is impossible.
Fun day
I didn't play my best and due to amounts of rain recently the fairways were a bit wet but not terrible. The greens were hard to read do to water but overall it was a typical fall golf day in Oregon. I enjoyed it and for 25 bucks it was well worth it.
Tough challenge
Tough challenge. Course is hard but that's a good thing in my eyes. It doesn't suite my eyes but whatever I still enjoy the challenge. I did set a personal best but I feel I can still go lower on this tough challenge of a course. Made only 1 birdie which doesn't help my cause. Most take advantage of the par 5's on the back. If I wanted to show visitors Portland area courses with bite this course would be one of them. I would include chehelm and heron lakes great blue.
First time on course - glad we were playing with veterans
My friend and I decided to try the course. Fortunately, we were paired with course veterans who counseled us. Otherwise we would have gotten into even more trouble than we did!! Loved the course. Each hole is different. Best advice? Keep it in the fairway, stay within yourself and make good choices.
Great Course
Pace of play was incredibly slow even for mid-day mid-week on the front nine. Much better on the back nine since the group in front of and behind our group only played nine holes.
Hard to tee off in late afternoon
It seems like Retail would rather get you to spend money in the pro shop and golf range then let you actually play golf. I live about a mile from the course, but since I've been by there to play after work or in the late afternoon by myself the last two times they wouldn't let me tee off. The starter, a young stocky blond man, told me "sorry we're all booked up for at least 45 minutes. I sat in my car and watched him play around the 1st tee and there was no one in sight for 10 minutes I've given up trying to playing there and have been having to drive to Heron Lakes or Eastmoreland golf course. It seems they have forgotten it's about PLAYING GOLF.
MARSHAL
I DID NOT ENJOY PLAYING HERE ON A WEEKEND. THEY PACK YOU EVERY 6 MIN
AND THEN THE MARSHAL RUNS AROUND AND TELLS YOU TO PICK UP THE PACES WHEN YOU CAN ONLY GO AS FAST AS THE GROUP IN FRONT OF YOU, WE GOT IN TROUBLE FOR GETTING THINGS FROM THE SNACK CART, TOTALY UN CALLED FOR, I WILL NEVER PLAY HERE AGAIN UNLESS IT'S A WEEK DAY,,
Red Fail
Great location with tons of potential. Unfortunately it appears that the greens fees ( collected hand over fist) are not being used to show the course any maintenance love. Greens were pock marked like an acne riddled middle schooler, bunkers either had no sand or some really fluffy sand with rakes sure to give even the toughest of hands a nasty splinter. So aside from the convenience, not worth the money.
Dissatisfied
Will never play that course again. We were made to play with one other person Very slow player and then they sent a single behind us and one behind him.
Let people play thru which slowed our game .
Pace of Play
We were instructed by the starter that there was a 15 minute rule per hole and we were totally fine that. We were also told a marshal would be out watching. Never saw one marshal. It took us over 3 hours to play the front 9 because of 4 drunk irresponsible adults who never should have been allowed on the course. They used profanity all day long, and after the 9th hole, I had to call the clubhouse to get someone out to talk to them. We finally played through and then were greeted again by these 4 who had no respect for the course and started driving their carts all over the course cutting through holes and cutting through the fairways while people where trying to play. I know you will run into just idiotic people, but if a course is going to instruct us to follow a time rule per hole, then they need to have someone out the entire day to enforce it. It shouldn't take 5 1/2 hours to play 18 holes of golf anywhere.
The course is not ready
The course is not ready to play. I should have just hit balls at the driving range. I'm still shell shocked by the amount of balls I lost. When I played the course, it was a marsh. Standing water on the fairways and my shots would plug into the ground causing lost balls on shots hit to the middle of the fairways. The ground is so wet the mowers can't cut on a regular basis. You will see long grass and very annoying white flowers that will trick you into thinking, it's your ball. I'm going to wait a couple months to play it again and will attempt to get 10 rounds in this summer.
Avoid This Course
Let me preface this with saying that I didn't just golf here once, this isn't an isolated event that I'm basing my review on. Over the span of the last 4 years I've played at Redtail more than 30 times. In the beginning, I didn't know any better. I thought 5 minute groups and 5 hour rounds were normal.
It turns out, they are not.
Outside of Mt. View I've never played a slower course in my life and one year I golfed over 123 times in the Portland-area. Redtail is just one of those extremely backed up courses that thanks to its proximity manages to get a steady flow of hackers from open to close.
Now, if it was just the 5 hour round I wouldn't even bother leaving a review. Sometimes slow golf is OK if the course is worth it. It's never great, but you probably wouldn't complain about Spyglass or Pebble or maybe even Bandon if you had to wait on the tee box for 10 minutes+ for the group in front to finish.
This isn't any of those courses. This is simply a suburban golf course that overcharges to play a crowded course covered in goose poo.
The staff I'm mixed on. Some of the guys in the pro shop are awesome, some of them (instructors) act a little stuck up. That has no real bearing on quality of the course. You pay, you go. However, what you pay to play at Redtail is top of the market, especially if you use GolfNow to book hot deals.
$30+ to walk 18 at Redtail? For $16 more you can get a cart at one of the best courses in Portland - The Reserve. For half that price you can get a cart at Mt. View. For the same price you can play twilight with a cart at Stone Creek.
All 3 are better options.
I've learned to avoid this course, no matter how convenient the location may be. It's just simply not worth the money or the frustration.
