Ranch at Tonto Verde Golf Club
About
The Ranch course at Tonto Verde Golf Club is the newer one, this golf course designed exclusively by Gary Panks, who laid it out over 6,988 yards, upon which it has played host to several golf events at the professional and amateur level since it opened in 2002.
The Ranch golf course at the Tonto Verde Golf Club serves power golfers due to the distance, though it will certainly test those who golf a good short, thanks to big greens that are bunkered well and slope, too.
The Tonto Verde Golf Club offers stay-and-play packages for those who don't want to lodge themselves too far from the Peaks and Rancho golf courses. Pets are generally welcome, and the minimum stay is only three nights.

A little communication guys, please?
Perhaps I walked in right after a "manager" meeting, but the staff seemed under pressure that extended to this customer, which caused a little confusion. I was told I would be golfing with a 3some. Then I was given a cart with no ice chest, which I sure needed during this 95+ degree day. The 3 some never materialized on the first tee, so I went back to the starter, only to find out the 3some had teed off much earlier. So much for a good transitional beginning of play on a very desirable course. A little communication guys, please?
Nice track
First time playing this course. Nice mix of holes. Fairways are generous, but you still have to position your tee shots. Will play again.
Course was in great condition. Greens were very smooth and bunkers were consistent
I played a practice round here prior to an AGA torunament and found this course to be excellent. The staff were attentive and friendly. The practice facility was very nice. The chipping green was in the same condition as the putting greens. The range was well set up with yardages displayed to each of the flags.
The course conditions were tremendous. The fairways were lush and the greens smooth. I especially liked the small flags that indicated the start of the various washes going across the fairways. I was able to get good laser distances from these as well as the flags which had reflectors. Carts were allowed on the fairways which helped speed of play. When I played (twilight) the course was lightly loaded and I was able to get round in 3 1/2 hours.
The only negative was that it is a bit far out from central Phoenix, but well worth the drive.
awesome course
well maintained, nice pretty fast greens, challenging to make you come back, well priced on golfnow
Simply a 10!
Tonto Verde, The Peaks, is a real gem! I wouldn't be able to find anything to complain about. The practice facilities are among the very best on any course I have played, the fairways very lush and groomed, the greens as true as any I have played (even up there with those Superstition Mt.), the varying lengths of holes and difficulty make it a fair but challenging course. The views are nice and the area around the club house says "class" from the get-go. I played at a great price via GN, it's too bad that during Feb. and Mar. that it is so pricey but I guess there are enough members and enough people are willing to pay the green fees that the fees stay high. I played The Boulders, North Course, the day before and I'd take Tonto Verde any day. I'm heading back there for sure. (GN, please get the rating bars fixed, extremely difficult to give each item a proper rating as sometimes the square moves, sometimes it doesn't, so I give up)!
The Pace was great
This is in my top ten in the area. No one held us up and no one could catch us. Played in 3 hours and 15 minutes. Could have been faster if we had played better. We couldn't control the wind. The course was in great shape, fairways trim and the greens fast. The sand is a bit inconsistant, but then your not suppose to be in the sand. All in all it was a great day, but then, there was that wind.
This course was very pleasant.
Superb clubhouse, good food, cordial service, great practice facilities, punctual, very interesting course. Great afternoon!
Long way to drive for a decent course and pro shop attitude
The course was in very good condition, found the fairways to have good lies, tees were well maintained. There was some very minor burn out areas on a few sloped approaches and minor areas on a few fairways. Be mindful there are natural areas and washes that you cannot see from the tee box, and/or crossing the fairway on par-5's.
The greens were receptive, putts rolled true, and the speed was great.
The driving range was high quality. It was well maintained, plenty of space, good targets, and well attended to by the staff.
The short game area was well maintained but the overall design of it was more than a little goofy, there was plenty of space and a very large surface to hit pitches/chips onto but there were no realistic course conditions to utilize for practice; there were severe slopes and severe collection areas, nothing like actual course conditions. I was either chipping uphill with an 8-foot break on a 20-foot chip, or chipping into a sidehill, then down a steep slope to a collection area where the pin was located. It was a very well maintained but very odd
design.
Had two altercations on separate occasions with the pro shop staff. Watch out for the spouse of the head pro! She works the shop, and good luck getting her to acknowledge any wrong doing, ever. And twice as much good luck may be necessary if you are trying to get the head pro to acknowledge any issues (did I mention they are husband and wife?). All of the staff outside was helpful, very friendly. Not true for inside the pro shop.
This course is a good value at under $40. Otherwise there are plenty of other choices all over the Valley that won't take you 35 to 45-mintues and a 1/4 tank of gas to get to (and another 1/4 tank and 45 minutes to get home). At TPC Champions the green fees are $50 (all day, every day) for residents, if you walk. Monday was a good value at Tonto Verde but, I wasted too much time getting to/from and $15-$20 in gas, followed by irritating shop staff and headaches....so today (Friday) I saved $$$ on gas, and 1 hour 15 minutes of drive time (made it home for dinner!) playing closer in at TPC Champions (better course conditions) with a pro shop staff that will bend over backwards to take great care of you and will actually accommodate you getting out for 18-holes on their course. They actually enjoy and like having you show up and play their course vs. giving you 100-pounds of attitude and "spousal entitlement"...... what a concept? I found it really odd that the lady in the shop insisted on letting me know that her husband was the head pro when I had a problem with her and asked to speak to management. Nice touch?
Throughly enjoyable
I would have to agree with other comments..really fun course. Played the Peaks course which is some what narrow and unforgiving if you have "driving issues" off the t-box as I did several times. Just a great feel to the place, nice folks, and a cool club house.
Great course Great views
Would enjoy playing this course on a regular bases. Well maintained and challenging enough.
Exceptional!
Great practice facility. Staff very friendly - except for course marshal who showed up on the 16th hole and asked us to speed up play when he should have been speaking to the group in front of us, on whom we had waited all day.
Course in excellent condition - greens very fast.
Green were absolutely perfect
overall course condition was fantastic, with excellent fairways and perfect greens. Ranger kept playing moving along so pace of play was very good.
Tonto Verde has two excellent courses, which can be played for very reasonable rates.
There is nothing to complain about at the Tonto Verde courses. Staff, pace of play, views, very well maintained course...all for a wonderful rate. Get there!
excellent
A great bargain and well worth the drive. We recommend this course highly.
A beautiful Course!!!
Tonto Verde is my favorite course in all the greater Phoenix area! It is in the far north of Scottsdale but is only about a thirty five minute drive from the 101 on Scottsdale Road and well worth the trip. The staff is very friendly, helpful and truely make everyone feel welcome....members or not. They keep the pace of play consistently. Fairways and greens are immaculate! Sand traps and water give the course a reasonable degree of difficulty but not so difficult that the average golfer becomes frustrated. Golfnow gives a great price for this course. My only fear is that Tonto Verde will no longer offer times to the public as it's number of members increases.
Great Greens! Challenging for women!
Overall course condition was excellent especially the greens which were about 10 0n the stimpmeter and very smooth!
Staff was very friendly.
Course requires short hitters and women to carry several washes that are not in play for most men.
Worth the drive for beautiful, challenging and fun course
I drove 45 min. NW from my hotel in Phoenix to this course way out in Rio Verde. Its a full golf resort in a new-looking desert residential development. The course was in excellent condition, the weather sunny and 80s, and the scenic mountains always in view. There were old saguaro cacti among the desert vegetation surrounding some of the fairways.
As a high handicapper I found this course challenging but I enjoyed my round with 2 other single players who were better golfers. I picked up once in a while to keep pace so we were never behind, but we waited for a few tolerable minutes on several tees. We saw rangers on a couple of occasions, one who was keeping an eye on the 4-some in front of us.
There are many deep bunkers on this course and the bottoms were damp from recent rains, very difficult outs from there. Washes (dry by this time) across many fairways were clearly marked on the course map provided. Spacious greens were acceptably fast and in very good condition, not too many serious undulations. Water is in play on just one or two holes.
Tonto Verde has a nice practice facility with pyramid-stacked new range balls, large putting green and separate chipping area. There is also a beautifully kept 18 hole putting course by the big clubhouse, situated around a pretty lake with waterfalls and various waterfowl, including big white egrets. It was a relaxing finish to the day as the sun set.
I paid a total of $84 for my twilight (1:51) GolfNow tee time, including cart and range balls. No GPS or ice chest on the cart. I consider that a bit pricey (thus my 4 stars instead of 5) but still a decent value for this course during peak season.
Great place to play.
Outstanding scenic landscape with a golf course in a great shape. Very pleasant palce to play.
Good training facility.
NIce layout for the average golfer.
Nice layout for the average golfer. Fairway grass was top notch. We played the Peaks course. The only complaint I have is about thier course guide. For a newcomer, I didn't have enough info. There are washes on a number of holes and the yardage from the tee is not given. They could look at the course guide for We Ko Pah or for Raven and learn how to do better.
Great condition, great scenery, quite a challenge.
The Ranch 18 was in great condition, some very nice but challenging holes. Overall quite a treat.
