Makray Memorial Golf Club (formerly known as Thunderbird Country Club) is a public course that has been open since 1962. To commemorate 40 years of great golf, the course was remodeled and revamped in 2002. The renovations improved its playability and also made it more challenging. The championship-caliber layout features strategically placed bunkers, including some Scottish-style sod-faced ones, and tricky water hazards on several holes. The hilly terrain offers both challenging elevation changes and scenic views. The golf course finishes with a long par 5 that plays across a canyon of berms to a narrow fairway. Further accuracy is needed to reach the well guarded green surrounded by high berms, a pot bunker to the left, and a deep, steep bunker to the right. In addition to the course, Makray Memorial G.C. boasts an extensive practice facility with 1 1/2 acres of grass teeing ground, two putting greens, and a short-game area.

Beautiful Sunday

4-some in front of us was a little slow, but we managed. Played with a couple from Peoria who turned out to be very nice people to golf with. As usual the greens were very challenging. Bring your A-game and play from the correct T's at Makray.

A Hot Deal and a good one.

Booked using a Hot Deal on GolfNow. For mid-May it is in great shape. It was a cold, raw day but very playable. Greens were fast but not unreadable. Bunkers were consistent. Lots of water and wetlands so keep it in the fairway. Club House is like a country club, wouldn't expect anything less in Barrington. Taking my girlfriend there for dinner tonight. We paid $66/person, green fee and cart. You'll be paying up though when the summer hits high gear.

Starter has no communication with pro shop, checked in online got a confirmation to go to starter, starter says we need to go inside to check in, pro shop says you don't need to come in go to the starter. Pace of play extremely slow stuck behind 4 groups the whole time. Clubhouse and pro shop reeked of curry. Strange that there’s no half way house and you have to walk through the dining room to get a hot dog at the bar. Putting greens were fast, fairways narrow and unforgiving. Superintendent should take care of the weeds that are growing everywhere. Personally not worth a dollar over $65 for 18.

Nice course but slow

Very nice course and layout. Pace was unbearably slow. Range is kind of expensive for what you get.

Hurry up and wait!

Several times the same ranger reminded us to keep up with the group in front. The first time he said it was as we finished a par 4 as the group behind was just getting to teebox. The third time was finishing a par 4 before we could even see the group behind and then we proceed to wait 5 minutes for the group ahead to clear the fairway. He followed us most of the back 9 and appeared to record 3 of our approach shots on his phone. Otherwise it was fine. Greens are tough and we’re not in great shape. We played our round in 4 hours and only once or twice the group behind have to wait a minute on the tee.

One of the better courses in the area. The starter was great but some other staff members were rather rude. ff members

Great layout with some elevation changes. The greens have plenty of undulations and for a first timer not easy to read the greens. Hole 4, a downhill par 3 with narrow, long and elevated lakeside green was a real challenge. I would like to go back, but not willing to take abuse after paying a rather high green fee

Great Track with very challenging greens

This was my 1st time playing Makray Memorial GC and it lived up to its reputation. The layout is a typical midwest course. Lots of big trees and relatively flat, with incredibly fast & difficult greens. Also, the bunkers around the greens are sometimes very big and deep, so that makes hitting greens even more crucial. Most of the greens are raised with false fronts, so you should take an extra club when hitting into them. However, many of the greens are tilted back to front, so going past the pin is sometimes inviting a 3-putt.

If you play the tips like I did, you'll love being able to hit your driver many times in the round, but there are short par-4 holes that make selecting which club to hit off the tee challenging. The course was in very good shape, other than some small areas being chewed up by grub-eating animals.

I highly recommend playing this course and I look forward to coming back because I will definitely play certain holes differently than I did the first time around.
