The best public golf courses of Illinois stretch from Chicagoland to the Quad Cities and down to the state's southern border.
GolfPass releases a Top 25 Public Golf Courses in Illinois every year thanks to YOU. We create our annual Golfers' Choice lists by curating the reviews submitted by everyday golfers. We use GolfPass' Ratings Index logic that weights newer reviews and combine it with a course's subcategory averages.
Each course needed at least two reviews and at least some public access to qualify. Elite private clubs like the Chicago Golf Club, the Black Sheep Golf Club, Conway Farms in Lake Forest and the Old Elm Club in Highland Park weren't eligible. None of the four public golf courses at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club received enough reviews to be eligible. If you think any of them belong on this list, make sure to review them next time you play.
We make our Golfers' Choice best-of lists user friendly. Simply click on the photo of each course to learn more about the facility or to book a tee time (in most cases).

What they're saying: "Beautiful day golfing Lick Creek. We even got off 30 minutes early so (it was) an extra plus! Followed a Sunday morning outing and never had any hold ups. Course was in good condition, fun to play with some elevations and quite a few hilly holes. Be careful to stay in the fairway as lots of deep ravines (are located) off the rough. Greens were in decent shape too. Played in about 3 1/2 hours. Staff was super nice and helpful. Will definitely play again soon!" - KathyLong -

Mendota Golf Club
What they're saying: "First time ever playing this golf course. I went by myself. (I) saw some bad reviews, but I decided to play it anyways because the price was right. When I got there, I couldn’t believe how immaculate this course was! I have to say by far one of my favorite courses and played a lot of different courses. (I) definitely will be playing more games here. Definitely a Hidden Gem. 💎" - GolfPass Reviewer
-
Mt. Prospect Golf Club
Green fee: $48-$58+
What they're saying: "Played here for the first time in a long time. The course conditions were very good. I was a bigger fan of the original layout of this course, but they have done a nice job updating the course. The greens are what make this course play a lot tougher than it used to. The course was pretty full, and the overall pace was about 4 1/2, although it feels slow having to wait a few minutes on every tee, sometimes before the group ahead has even teed off." - gpark17 -
Wolf Hollow
Green fee: $25-$33+
What they're saying: "Beautiful and well maintained championship course, I recommend to all skills of golfers. I tee (it up) from blues and do great. Very important to know how and what shots to take. Hooks and fades are important on drives. The average golfer teeing from whites will have a very fair time as well. Great place with many opportunities for the bogey golfer to correct themselves too." - XDOM1NOX -
Cantigny Golf
Green fee: $65-$75+
What they're saying: "Great course layout, excellent facility, courteous staff and excellent restaurant. Overall, a great way to spend the day. Course conditions are always first class." - tonylou1234 -
Belk Park Golf Course
Green fee: $32-$47
What they're saying: "I believe Belk is the best golf course for the money in the metro east!" - Mikerumz -
Golfmohr
Green fee: $24-$38
What they're saying: "This course is my go to in the Quad Cities. Great par 3s and long straight par 4s. The 9th is a drivable par 4 but will test your putt reading tremendously. Mike in the pro shop is super cool and fun to talk to, (and) has it running smoothly as well. I try to play here as much as I can." - brienbyrne

Not many downstate courses listed. But, there are many nice ones. I've played a few on this list that are not as nice.
