Makray Memorial Golf Club

About
Makray Memorial Golf Club (formerly known as Thunderbird Country Club) is a public course that has been open since 1962. To commemorate 40 years of great golf, the course was remodeled and revamped in 2002. The renovations improved its playability and also made it more challenging. The championship-caliber layout features strategically placed bunkers, including some Scottish-style sod-faced ones, and tricky water hazards on several holes. The hilly terrain offers both challenging elevation changes and scenic views. The golf course finishes with a long par 5 that plays across a canyon of berms to a narrow fairway. Further accuracy is needed to reach the well guarded green surrounded by high berms, a pot bunker to the left, and a deep, steep bunker to the right. In addition to the course, Makray Memorial G.C. boasts an extensive practice facility with 1 1/2 acres of grass teeing ground, two putting greens, and a short-game area.

Challenging but great
Love to play here. Greens are fast and well kept. Tee boxes and fairway need some repair from divots to get the 5 star rating. Staff was great and beverage cart comes by often.
FANTASTIC Experience
Pros:
- Customer service is out of this world here. Had a round a month ago get rained on, no questions asked they gave me a refund for the exact number of holes I didn't get to play. Came out again and was grouped up with a threesome that showed up with one golf bag. We fell so far behind pace that I just lost the will to keep playing. No questions asked, I was given a refund for the holes I didn't play. Came out again today and had a PERFECT round under 4 hours with a threesome. Also they have FREE CHILLED water bottles on about every 6 or so holes. This course does customer service right.
- Pace of play as mentioned above seems really great. It was a Friday so maybe that had something to do with it but we finished a round in about 4 hours and some change.
- Course layout. This course does back tees properly. It feels like a PGA Tournament from the tips especially with the wind. Holes have a lot of risk/reward elements and the greens are tough but not Mount Prospect Golf Course tough. You have to respect them but they don't feel overly brutal.
Netural:
- Not sure if this is explicitly allowed but there were A LOT of homeowners walking their dogs on the cart paths and even on the course. On top of that, most of the dogs were quite hostile. Not a great experience here.
- Halfway house (the food stand/truck that is out at the course Friday-Sunday) doesn't accept cards. Have to pay cash.
Cons:
- Course was a bit beat up in some spots. Also the greens, while they roll true and fast, just seem a bit off (not sure what type of grass it is). Lots of unfilled/fixed divots in the fairways, and a couple fairway bunkers have noticeably worse and less sand than the greenside ones.
- Seems SLIGHTLY overpriced. I feel like this place needs to match the Highlands of Elgin and Mount Prospect.
Overall I would GLADLY come back here. It seems like a very walkable course so I'll be giving that a go next time.
Exceptional
Highly recommend if you want a course to truly test you
A day where everything is perfect^^
I postponed my reservation because of the bad weather, but I was so happy to be able to go to a good place at a good price. The green condition and friendly service were the best!!👍
Played from gold
Loved playing the course. It was challenging and fun. They even offered free bottles of water through out the course. It felt like a country club. Will definitely be back.
Makray Shines
Great course in perfect condition with fast greens, and a balance of challenging holes mixed with short par 3 and 4’s.. Good range, pace of play on the weekend was excellent with rangers keeping the pace. Free bottles of water every 6 holes, and a drink cart on the course. Nice clubhouse with good restaurant/bar with friendly staff. For the money, an excellent championship level course.
Extremely challenging greens and not in the best condition
I'll start by saying this is an excellent golf course, I just want to give a fare warning to those considering playing.
First the greens are by far the toughest I've putted on. Almsot all greens are long and narrow, and slope hard down from back to front. If you go above the hole (and with many front pins this happens often) you have anb extremly fast putt. On 9 (par 4) I was on in two but had a 40 ft putt down hill. I barely touch my ball and it rolls past the hole off the green and into a bunker. If you are up for the challenging greens then this is the course for you, but for a 15ish handicapper, it become a bit unejoyable by the time I had downhill put after downhill putt.
Also the conditions were not what I would expect for paying $100. Much of this could be attributed to the course being played frequently (and golfers not filling divots or fixing ball marks, but most fairways were littered with divots and a few greens were in rough shape from unfixed ball marks.
Overall a great course design, driving range, clubhouse, amenties (they had ice water out on many holes on a hot day). But the greens play extremely difficult and it isn't in top shape, I'm not overly eager to play this course again.
Beautiful, well-manicured course
This course was a challenging course for a small time golfer. The par 3s were tough and were a stretch for par 3s. The par 5s were right on and the par 4s stretched us just enough to make the holes a fun challenge. I’d love to play this course again but at the price, I will probably find something closer to home at a more reasonable cost. Overall, great experience!

Fun track! Had a slow group in front of us, otherwise pace was fine. Greens are tough. Fast. Bring singles for the ball dispenser. Really nice folks working at every level there. Great time!
This is a great course
Great course in excellent condition, many challenging holes. Some par 4's are short but all have some feature that make it challenging. Would play this course all the time if I lived closer to it.
