Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club
About
Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club offers the traditional links course reminiscent of those found in the British Isles, situated amidst Virginia's horse country. The club gets its name from the land's former use, a raspberry field. The scenic terrain overlooks to Catoctin Mountains and there are still a few raspberry bushes dotting the course. By far the layout's most formidable challenges come from the deep, stacked pot bunkers that make it truly feel like a classic Scottish golf course. There are also water hazards on a few holes. The course's signature is the par-4 third hole, which is long but plays downhill all the way. The 10th hole, another par 4, is one of the toughest. The landing area is generous off the tee but there is a creek and pond to the left and fairway bunkers on the right.

Played slow
I was told when I teed off that everyone was finishing within 4 1/2 hours. Well it took us 5 hours. When we got to the 18th tee box there were 3 groups waiting to tee off. Too many courses to play in this area: I will choose another course next time.
Incredibly Frustrating
I usually play this course at least once a year and every time I'm reminded why I want to play here, but never come back for the rest of the year. Great layout, Great staff. They try to keep the course in good condition (except it looks like some of the tee boxes never receive any maintenance) considering the amount of play it receives - all good except for the 6+ hour rounds. This time, there was a tournament (what "premier" public course books tournaments on Fridays???) which created 4-5 separate groups on several tee boxes until people just gave up and left. The only reason I tried it again this year is because they were charging $52. But nothing is for free and in this case the cost was my time. I've instituted a permament ban on this course.
Mixed feelings
This is a beautiful course but I felt the course condition is going down, especially for the front 9 greens. Staff is friendly. Food at the restaurant is not very good though.
We Love This Course
Everyone is very helpful. Our only problem (and it was only this time) is that the three groups in front of us were extremely slow. We ended up skipping two holes to get ahead of them, as there was no one slowing them down. Other than that, it was an absolutely lovely time.
A 5 star course, with a pace of play issue
This is a wonderful golf course, immaculately maintained with beautiful views and homes. The cart loaders were dressed in long sleeves and bow ties, a little warm for them on a 90 degree afternoon. Everything was first rate, except for pace of play. Took 5 hours to play 18 holes. Ranger said that it was not due to slow players, just people being out early in the year. I didn't buy that. They had 4 holes (long ones) as cart path only, although course was totally dry in mid summer conditions. Allowing these holes to be 90 degree cart would have speeded things up considerably. Waited at least 20 minutes on #18, with 3 groups backed up on it.
When proper pace of play, this would be in my top 10 list.
Holiday Weekend Golf
Our tee off time was 10:30 and we finished just before . The course was in good condition.
Love this course
The staff here is awesome, course is great, beautiful weather and paired up with nice couple!
Amazing
Second in the area only to Creighton Farms.
Great public course
Great layout, challenging tee shots, & fast greens. Only disappointing part was the bunkers (lots had just mud in them). Definitely worth the drive out there
Great Track
Only negative is that the greens were freshly aerated. that would have been nice to know prior to booking, but was still very playable.
Beautiful and Sprawling
Personally, this is one of my favorite courses in the Northern Virginia area. With the way in which the course is laid out, it never feels as if it is crowded, and even on the busiest of days, it never feels as if you have someone breathing down your neck. I absolutely enjoy the layout of each hole, as they present different challenges and opportunities on each one. From an aesthetic point of view, the course is beautiful, especially in the early fall once the leaves begin changing color. It seems as if many of the semi-private courses in Northern Virginia have houses bearing down right on top of fairways and greens, but you'll find an adequate distance between course and residence. While many of the fairways are large, the subtle rolls and other obstacles thrown in the way add to the challenge that this course presents. Finding yourself in any of the bunkers will provide the greatest challenge to the game, as there are some that are simply brutal to recover from. The course staff is as friendly and professional as always, and add to the experience of playing. If looking for a place to get away and simply connect with the game, then Raspberry Falls is the place to be.
Bonus round
December 11th and 68 degrees. The course was in great shape, well worth the 1 1/2 hour ride Home in Friday traffic.
Beautiful course. Lackluster service.
This is the prettiest public course in Northern Virginia...hands down. The mountain and valley views are breathtaking. I can only imagine that this place is even prettier in the summer. The view from the 18th tee box is unreal.
The service left a lot to be desired. My reservation included free range balls, but there was no mention of it at the pro shop. Nor were there any range balls available at the range. I eventually drove back to the cart house and asked where I could get range balls and I was just told "they were out there." It's not the biggest gripe, but a course like Raspberry is competing for the higher-end public golfing dollar. There service wasn't half as good as what I got at Whiskey Creek two weeks prior.
Late season weekday
Excellent conditions, but no one out there to chop up the course. Greens fast and hard to read. Should have shot 6 strokes better, but needed a caddy to read the uphill and downhills. hade to look at everything from every angle to get close enough not to 3-putt.
Course review
Other than 3 holes under repair, the course is superbly maintained, and we enjoyed so much playing on the course.
Northern Va golf course
Great layout, was extremely windy and cold, planning to return
1st timer
Nice course, very good staff, generous fairways,. Long if you want it. I look forward to playing it again!
Excellent course!
Great staff and excellent course. Had great time and would play again.
A DMV Staple
I have been playing Raspberry Falls off and on since 1999 (back when there were ZERO houses on the property) and have watched the course mature and evolve (sorry, no more beautiful stacked sod bunkers) over time. The course seems to be in a place now where it is what it is. Meaning, it's a beautiful course with solid bones. Equally playable for skilled players and not-so-skilled weekend hackers. Plenty of tee boxes allow you to find a course length that suits your handicap. Not many flat lies to be found in the fairway will test your ball striking ability.
The day we played was a day after a day of rain. So, the course was partially cart path only, which is tough since the paths are not super close to the fairways. Also, lots of mud on the ball and not a lot of roll. For the most part all areas from tee to green were in good shape for later in the season with some exceptions. While we didn't pay the full price of $105, you would expect fewer of these ground under repair areas.
Overall, the course is highly enjoyable with a lot of doglegs to the right, a few forced carries, rolling fairways, and plenty of bunkers. While meant to have a Scottish flavor, it's just imitation at this point. It's a course that at its peak was a jewel of NoVA golf and immaculately maintained when the money was flowing like water. Some of that luster has been diminished after the financial crisis made the inflated mansion values plummet back to Earth, but the course has rebounded nicely and remains a great track. Especially if you can get a decently discounted rate.
challenging course - great day
Our foursome had a great day on this challenging and beautiful course. It was the first time for myself and two others in our group and we will know the course set up better the next time. The course was in good shape, but don't get into the knee high rough - impossible to find a stray ball. The fairways, greens, short rough and bunkers were all in good shape although we have had limited rain recently.
