Sunday River Golf Club

About
Located just three hours outside of Boston, Sunday River Golf Club, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., is worth the short trip, especially if you are coming from Portland, which is less than two hours away. It is one of New England's must-play golf courses. The layout is nestled in the foothills of the Mahoosac Range, overlooking the beautiful Sunday River Valley. The course itself is perched on a sloping hillside, offering panoramic views that stretch all the way to Old Spec, Maine's third highest peak. The spacious course measures in at 7,130 yards from the tips. Jones fully utilized the naturally dramatic elevation changes, so be prepared for some uneven lies and the occasional blind shot. The course's challenges are nicely balanced by generous greens and wide fairways, making Sunday River Golf Club accessible for a wide range of skill levels.

Beautiful Mountain Course
I would have loved to see this course being built. Expertly carved out of mountains of Maine with beautiful views, well laid out holes with plenty of challenges. It was very windy when we played, so our scores were not what we expected, but the experience was well worth the ride.
incredible greens!
Absolutely beautiful golf course. Very challenging and the greens were incredible. Bring all of your green reading skills or there will be plenty of 3 and 4 putts. Could not have been more fun!
Great greens, great views.
Only had time for one round during my trip, and I'm glad I chose Sunday River. It's a very challenging course with many elevation changes, so you have to be good with your distance control on approach shots.
The greens were nice, with large surfaces and lots of break. Very challenging to read, I misread a lot of the breaking putts.
I played with rented clubs, and the driver was in bad shape, so if you are only getting one shot at this place I don't recommend using their clubs.
1st time in Maine
The wife and I originally decided to make this a 'golfless' trip for the 1st time in years...When we realized how far out we were & this was the #1 rated course there, we decided to rent/play...Would've been a better idea to have golf shoes..Course was good, staff was very friendly, we had a good time. If in the area Sunday River should be played.
Play this course!!!
It doesn't get any better than Sunday River. The layout and views are amazing. Everything was in very good shape except for a few brown spots on a couple of fairways. Expected seeing it hasn't rained in quite a while. Just cause you get on the green in regulation doesn't mean a automatic par. You must really use your head and read the greens right. Staff was super friendly from the cart guy, front desk, and bar. If you live in the east or are here on vacation, you must play this course if you get a chance. I've played many courses including the best there is and this ranks right up there.
6 HOUR ROUND OF GOLF?!
This course should be called MONDAY River because nobody likes Monday. My dad booked a tee time for us for my birthday, and I am very disappointed. The greens were awful, even though over the phone they said that they were stupendous. The pace of play was horrible!! After nine holes, taking 3 hours, there were 3 foursomes waiting to tee off at 10. We walked off the course because slow rounds are really boring!! When we asked for a nine hole refund, the guy said "No! You got a good price on Golf Now." Thank you, Sunday River, for ruining a kid's birthday.
6 hour round?
Actually, it was 3 hours for 9 holes and the 10th hole had 3 foursomes waiting to tee off. We walked off. The guy in the pro shop basically said "tough, you got a good price through golf now.com" and wouldn't offer any refund of any kind when I asked. He couldn't have cared less. Actually, I had to go find him - he was outside smoking. The course is a nice track but I'll never go back. I don't recommend you going either, unless 6 hour rounds and poor service are your thing.
Beautiful track
A beautiful golf course with GREAT views! This is a challenging course but a fantastic time. I adopted the just enjoy the beautiful weather (75 degrees and no bugs) mentality early. If you hit the fairways you should be ok. Great place to have a golf weekend. We even brought the wives and sent them to the spa while we played. Everyone wins! If you get the chance you should get up there and play, you won't be sorry.
Love Sunday River
Another great trip to Sunday River Golf Club (we started coming in 2007). Can't beat the views, the golf and the people. Special place.

There's a reason this is "#1 in Maine"
Outstanding course; exceptional use of natural terrain. Breathtaking vistas, beautiful course. Great facility.
Rainy day day
Did full review of course after we played 18 on 8/12/15. We were able to play earlier than our scheduled tee tee because of impeding rain. It actually started raining as we teed off. Got nine holes in and the pro, Greg Perry, was able to accommodate us with our second nine two days later. He was very friendly and helpful.
Playable course for average golfer
This course was moderately difficult. Has some forced carries to greens and some blind second shots to greens. They need more yardage markers on fairways for those holes you can;t drive on. Also, I;m sure they've heard this before, but he cart paths need to be more user friendly, especially with all the seniors who play there. I'm sure there's a way to rebuilt some of those cart paths.
Also, stopped in clubhouse for drink at the turn and had to wait for server to finish serving a number of players that had already finished their round.
Great Rate from GolfNow! Hard course
Course is an excellent layout and very difficult. Missing shots is really not an option unless you have plenty of reloads. Play it forward if you want to have a chance at a reasonable score. Probably a much easier course for hdcps under 10.
Excellant
Scenery to die for A beautiful course in great condition.
Recommend you play this gem
A unique experience
This is one of my favorite courses and I have played a lot of the top courses on the east coast. (Pine Valley, Shinnecock, Bethpage Black, Merion, Hudson National ect) The greens are a little slow but rolled perfectly. They felt like a carpet. Some of the fairways were not in the best condition in areas but I didn't care. I brought my kids there and had such a great time. The views are spectacular as some of the holes. We were also very lucky to have basically no bugs. The staff are all very nice and very helpful.
The price is a little steep unless you go on Golf Now, I booked a time around noon for $65.00, includes cart. For that price I would play there everyday if I could.
Highly recommended,.
Views of the mountains were incredible
1st time playing here. Played from the blues... Challenging course from here . Play the whites if you can't hit your drive over 250. Tips are for tour players.... Can't imagine playing from there. Greens were true although a little slow . Had 3 plus inches of rain early in week probably had something to do with it. Best tip... Hit it in the fairway lot of 4/5 hybrids off the tee. Shot 71 with 3 three putts... So you can score here if your patient
Cart Path Only
This is a beautiful golf course. Great layout. We played after a hard rain and were "cart path only", bummer. The views are great but the fairways were in tough shape for a $75 senior green fee course. Grass was sparse and not well drained in many places. Greens were fine. We saw a red fox trot across the fairway. Clubhouse food under development. No booze is allowed on the course.
Fantastic and Interesting Layout with Stunning Views
Just wow... What a great golf course. Play this when you get a chance. The elevation changes are challenging, so be sure to take a cart. Greens in great condition. The views make it difficult to focus on the golf. :-)
