Marine Park Golf Course

Pace of play was terrible...starter tried to space things out by asking groups teeing off to wait for the group ahead to get on the green.....didn't help....had to leave after nine holes.....friend stayed on for an almost 6 hour round.

When we arrived, we were surprised to learn that because we booked on GolfNow we could not get senior rate. After some arguing, we got the senior rate but was charged an additional reservation fee. Have not had this issue before.

I first came to Marine Park a few years ago on a 65 degree day in the Spring. It was warming up outside so I thought that a t-shirt and shorts would suffice. That...was a very cold round for me.

The course is situated near the water and is a links-style course, hence lots of wind and few trees. They have recently added a lot of fescue mounds between the holes that really make the course look great, although finding your ball in that high grass is a serious challenge. It's mostly a flat course but it can play pretty long from the tips. Greens were in incredible shape and even most of my approach shots didn't seem to leave any ball marks.

Pace of play is slow, but that's always the case for NYC courses, especially on the weekend. And if you are willing to make the trek, you can get here by public transportation, via the last stop on the 2/5 train and the Q35 bus. It's always 10 degrees cooler out here than in the city, so I'd recommend going on a warm day. I recently played when it was in the high 80's and I was barely sweating because of the breeze.

I make a point of trying to play here at least once a year, and it's a 2 hour subway/bus trip for me, so I would recommend giving it a try!

This course is not for me but it does have some charms. The green complexes are quite good with interesting shapes, slopes and contours, and good bunkers. Be ready for very strong wind. The big problem is the layout is bad. The holes play in the same direction, and the longest holes are into the wind while the shorter holes are with the wind, which is counter intuitive. The fairways are flat and wide and generally straight. You can see the owners have done a lot to improve the course, including adding lots of mounding with fescue to partition the fairways. This is a course that some will like and others will very much dislike.

Beautiful design links style layout. Wind was blowing and the fescue was in bloom. Along with the sloping greens, the course played rather difficult. On top of that golf carts were not in use due to heavy rainfall in the morning so it was walking only at this track today. This is understandable because money was put into this course the last few years and it's in great shape. Probably upsetting people who only ride. Anyway, this is one of the best NYC public tracks. Other than the high prices Ferry Point, you won't get to play a links style set up and conditions any where else in the five boroughs.

enjoyed playing there ...first time... difficult greens as there hardly is any flat surface but they are rolling true for a public course...can't wait to play it again...course owes me a couple of birdies.

Call it what you want- Ferry Point on a budget, Poor mans Ferry point- Marine Park delivers in terms of value and playing experience. They have pumped $2-3 million into the course and is shows. This is NOT you grandfathers Marine Park. Some things have not changed: 5+ hour rounds on the weekends and the greens (pin placements) can sometimes be ridiculously impossible and bunker shots are more chip shots. Positive side the fairways and greens are are in good shape. From the blue tees its a solid test at +7000.

The ranger insisted on multiple occasions that we hit in to the group in front of us, insisting that "there's no way you are gonna hit them"... Turns out, the range doesn't understand... range, and our foursome knew their distances pretty well.

On our second encounter with the same ranger, this time on the back nine, we respectfully declined to fire drivers into the group ahead of us, which prompted a profanity laced power trip by our friend the rangeless ranger.

Look out for this guy. You'll know him by the cigarette hanging from his lip, his CYCLONES pullover and his Crocodile Dundee leather hat.

This is the third time I've played Marine Park in three years, and I have no idea what the last 4 holes are like, because I've bailed at 13 after nearly 5 hours of play all three times I've played there. This last experience plus the commute out and back make this course a "never again" proposition for me.

You'll find me at Silver Lake in Staten Island or Van Cortlandt park in the Bronx instead.

Had nice round at this course. Coming from New Jersey we hit a lot of traffic, so we ended up being a minute or so late for our tee time but the staff was very accommodating. Greens were in great shape. Overall a nice experience and would play again.

Course was a little soggy after 3 days of heavy raiin. A few holes were under repair and #8 had a temporary green. Knowing this course and their well kept greens it will only get better as the season progresses. Not too bad for an early season round but also keep in mind that their green airations begin this week starting 4/10 .

Course was in pretty good shape especially being its Feb. The only negative was the pin placement on the 16th hole . They put cup almost at the top, back of green & putt wouldn't stop if it didn't go in, it would roll all the way back down the green. took most foursomes at least a 1//2 hour as it was almost imposssible if u didn't hit on first putt. That's 1 of reasons why the pace of play was slow. If they did that on a week end nobody would finish.

This is by far the best NYC muni course I have played. All the other courses near the city are extremely cramped, short, and the pace of play is unbearable. This is actually a real golf experience with manicured greens and tee boxes. The pace of play is poor, but it's nothing like douglaston or any of the other queens courses.

Definitely recommend for anyone in the city who doesn't want to shell out a membership or $250 for point ferry.

Greens are fast and the course plays long. The only drawback is the burns/hills which are composed of patchy grass and exposed pieces of glass, gravel and various debris. Keep it on or near the fairway and your safe.

As far as the on course experience, Marine Park stands well above the average Public NYC Metro course. Tee boxes are immaculate, fairways are pristine, and the greens are very well cared for on every hole. The only downside to the course was that some of the bunkers had little to no sand at all.

It's link style golf, so there is often forgiveness for the errant tee shot, but sporadic wind gust and the long length from the tips still makes striking the ball well a must if you are looking to score low.

MP has a great practice facility despite the one drawback of not being able to hit driver on the range. But that is the club you should practice the least right before a round anyway, so no complaints from me there.

Had a great round with my wife. No waiting and a 4 hour round. Course was in good shape with litter and old tees well policed. Many improvements made recently and so little remains of the old landfill.

This course is by far the second best NYC course after the new Trump Ferry Point. I love the layout, a classic RTJ design. The greens are incredibly difficult, and make an otherwise average difficulty layout, much more challenging. You need to ensure you are in the right spot on every green, so it takes a few loops around the course before you can really master it. And even with proper approach placement, the greens run fast and true, and contain a lot of break. 2 putts is never guaranteed on most greens.

If there's one thing that can be said, it's that the rough is patchy in spots. You're just as likely to find hard pan as you are to find lush rough. This makes life a little easier, since rough should be the courses biggest defense--mostly the wind blowing your ball off line, away from the narrow fairways and into the rough (it's a relatively flat layout, with few fairway bunkers, and water coming into play on 1 hole). The new fescue mounding that has been installed, and is continuing to be installed certainly makes errant shots a little more penal, but there's plenty of room for improvement. Notably the "rough" between the 3rd and 4th holes, which is nothing but deadpan and weeds.

Pace of play can be an issue, but even on weekends, I usually finish around 5 hours, which isn't bad considering other city courses (nearby Dyker, Pelham & Split Rock in the Bronx), can run you 6 hours on a weekend.

This course is completely infested with very aggressive mosquitos. Myself and my playing partners were ravaged by mosquito bites for 3 holes before it became too much to bear and I had to get a ride back to the clubhouse to get some bug spray. I personally was bitten approximately 15 times. Even after applying the bug spray the mosquitos were biting us- just not as frequently so we had no choice but to come off the course after 12 holes. I brought this to the attention of the golf shop pro and he said the Parks Department refuses to spray for the mosquitos. I have played more than a thousand rounds of golf over the years all over the world and have never had to leave a golf course because of bugs. This can be a serious health issue as although Zika mosquitos are not in the area yet West Nile virus is always here. When the Zika mosquitos do make it here, it will have a built in breeding ground. I strongly recommend that golfers boycott this course until the issue is dealt with. Hopefully the economic loss will force the owners and the Parks Department to handle this serious public health issue.

Played this course for the first time and I was very impressed. It is well maintained and has a driving range, and practice area for chipping and sand shots. It's also longer than most NYC courses and challenging. Just bring plenty of bug spray. I will definitely be back.
