NO SAND IN ALL BUNKERS
the bunkers are almost concrete.
Be careful your shot in the bunker.
they don't invest anymore. you know why?
a lot of people visit there everyday.
Nice long course...wing can be a factor
I've played this course often and have always enjoyed it...the only complaint I have is when I booked it thru Golf Now I was not informed the greens have been aerated, and I was putting on sand....
Rude Pro shop Manager
I was not informed greens were being aerated, and was met with rude manners in the Pro shop by one of the managers by him blaming Golfnow for not informing me of this . I will not be back.
Best for the $ in the 5 boroughs
Marine Park is very flat and very long with some pretty difficult putts based on the pin placement. The greens are in good shape though and the work they continue to do with the burms in between the holes is giving it more character than the former glorified city links course. The staff is of mixed friendliness. Treat them with respect and you likely will receive the same in return. Cant beat it for $52 walking in prime time since its close to my house, The pace of play can be very slow like all city courses due to overbooking and the quality of some of the golfers. Expect anywhere from 5 to 6 hours on a weekend.
NYC -golf
Major renovations done, green and fairway are in great shape, immediate rough long, they are still working the traps and outer rough. Great deal for NYC. They do have 200; 150 and 100 yd makers, put could use yd makers on the par 3s.
Great greens
This course improves every week. It by far the best course in NYC.
course itself is average.
The course itself is average. I would play here again, however, the duration time to finish the 18 holes took me about 6 hours. Very very, extremely slow pace and way over crowded..
Unrealized potential
Would have given 4-star review had I not been privy to some very unprofessional commentary by certain staff members in front of multiple customers.
Course has the potential to be one of the best in the city with some hands-on management
Pace of play was unusually slow and rangers do not seem willing to make the necessary corrections.
Bunkers - Boring
Sand traps are concrete traps.
Aside from the greens which are extremely challenging, there is very little hole variation (only a couple of doglegs, very little elevation change, no water hazards, shallow bunkers, no thick rough). This course rewards long hitters and good putters.
Marine Park: Ever Improving
Marine Park is more, or less, my home course. It's less than 5 minutes from my house, so I play there very often, and have been playing there for almost 15 years. In that time, there has been a vast improvement in the course, and the facilities.
The tee boxes and fairways are in fantastic shape, and Marine Park's greens are the best, and most challenging in the city. You don't want to stray too far off the fairways, though. The course is built on an old garbage dump, so old glass sometimes leeches up in the rough. Also, the older bunkers need to be fixed up a bit, and have new sand added.
New mounding and bunkering adds to the links feel of the course, and enhances the beauty. More is coming, too.
Marine Park is about playing the wind. It can blow pretty hard off of Jamaica Bay, so be prepared to get creative in your shotmaking. It can also make the longest course in the city, at 6800+ yards from the back tees, play even longer.
The only drawback of all the improvements, is that the popularity of the course has increased, so the pace of play has slowed. 5 years ago, you could count on a 4-4 1/2 hour round, pretty consistently. Now, count on 5 hours, or more.
Still, Marine Park is a good test, and an enjoyable place to play.
What a tranformation
It has been at least 15 years (maybe more) since playing Marine Park and WOW! It is amazing what dedication, vision and money can do to a formerly public NY course. I was blown away with how much this course improved. Back when my friends and I played we constantly needed to find a patch of grass on the fairway to at least try to hit from. Not anymore.
Hats off to the owners and staff. Long holes that are perfect for wood players. Go for it.... Enjoy.
Poor customer service
So we got there right on time and the gentleman who was at the register in the pro shop gave us an attitude saying we were late! Rather than getting us on our way he proceeded to lecture me and my friend on why it is important to arrive earlier, we tried to get there earlier to hit some practice balls but we hit unexpected traffic instead. We got out on the course and the pace was ok, we were a 2 top and the group ahead was 4 so delays were expected. The holes were challenging but we always want a good challenge anyway. The only complaint I have about the course is that it is not well maintained in certain areas, I notice I was hitting some shots out of the rough and there were broken glass bottles at my feet. The greens on the other hand were awesome, very well maintained, the reason for a poor review was the gentlemans customer service skills, and the course having several holes with broken glass bottles.
Long and lovely
My first time at Marine Park. The fairways are long and wide but there is plenty of long grass to grab your ball if you don't hit straight. The greens are large, fast and sloping so putting is hard. From time to time you catch a view of Manhattan and there is a constant breeze, sometimes a full out wind, which carries the smell of the sea.
I was paired with two guys who are good players and we finished the front 9 in 1.5 hours. I was told this is not normal, and not to expect it again. I live in Westchester County and am used to 5-6 hour rounds, so I was in heaven, playing so quickly.
I will definitely come back, and recommend this course highly.
good course to spend a golf round
this is a really good course to play golf.it is well maintained. the best thing is you book your tee time and you start at the reserved time. the staff is very friendly and helpful. there is a ranger there to keep the pace. go play there and you will like it!
Bang for your buck
I got a golf now hot deal, and it was well worth it. It plays long, even on middle tees, and the greens play extremely fast. The cart paths need improvement, but overall it was worth what I paid.
what a change
when i walked through the front lobby and took a look at the 'new Marine park" i said wow.
the last time i played this course it was considered a cow pasture, burnt up fairways, and greens, sand all along the edge of the fairways broken bottles a broken fence you just shook your head.. i was in awe at the new marine park, from the moment i paid my greens fee, till the moment i finished the 18th hole, simply amazing. the staff is very friendly , the fairways were spectacular ,the greens were in great shape and challenging just amazing, the only down fall was the pace of play, my round was a 5hr round, i am not complaining because i started just like the 4 some in front of us, so i take it in stride.. i know early mornings should have a good pace per round, but in all a great place friendly and clean
ill will be playing there in the future.
Marine park golf course
It was my first time playing this course. Beautiful links course, well kept greens & fairways, friendly steff, great clubhouse facilities, nice driving range (irons only) and practice putting greens. My only complain is the pase of play - five and half hrs for 18 holes. They need more rangers to speed things up.
Awesome
Paid $20...hot deal. Course is in great condition. Greens are the best...super fast and true. Course can be windy sometimes...great practice areas. I highly recommend.
Great Day!
Perfect day for golf! Starter let us out before our tee-time, food/drink at the turn was great and the course was in pretty good shape. (Great weather too!) My only "complaint" is that as the course is being turned into a links style with the fescue grass, mounds, etc. the construction process is unsightly and distracting. And it does seem this has been going on for a REALLY long time. Otherwise, a great day!
