deserves more credit than it gets....
of all the nyc courses, (yes, I have played them all) marine park is my personal favorite and in the best condition. keep in mind, this is not a championship course and i doubt it will ever be, but it's a public nyc course that gets A LOT of play. There are bare spots on greens, fairways, and roughs but they do a good job of keeping the pin away from damaged areas. golfnow almost always has specials at this course, average of $40 on weekends with cart including taxes and fees is a great deal for this course. I see improvement every time i play here and when the renovation is complete I believe the course will get the recognition it deserves. I was lucky enough to get through 18 holes in 4 hours on Memorial Day, I know that is not the norm but the rangers are out on the course keeping an eye on the pace of play. Very happy with these changes at marine park. People need to understand where they are playing, muni nyc course, NOT 5 star championship course. You get what you pay for and I am happy with what I get at marine park.
In bad shape
Winter took a toll on this course Greens are in horrible shape.
Tough greens and pin placement
Overall, greens were in good shape and fast. The pin placements the day I played were pretty tough, they all were played on the side of a slope. Your putts had to be on point! The locals my buddy and I were paired up with had all the local course knowledge I needed so it turned out to be a great experience!
great greens
the greens are the best of any public course in the tri state area,i love the course and with the wind been so close to the water it adds to the challenge
Great course.
When I first started playing golf back in 2002 this was one of the first courses I played. Judging from the changes that took place these past couple of years, I must say, this is one of my favorite city courses. The fairways are 80 % immaculate and the greens roll true. It's difficult to lose balls as this course is wide open. If you are struggling with your driver, this is the course to play to find your groove. The challenge are the greens. Once your putting speed is off, goodbye ball.overall, a great city course
beautiful fairways
long time player of the curse glad to the owner improvements, course was in excellent plaint conditions, I love hills with the grass, berns I believe their called adds a extra challenge to the course, the wind is constant, must know if it's for you or against you.
Very good greens. Slow play.
The course is in very good condition for a muni. It's mostly a pretty basic layout but has a few interesting holes to break up the monotony. The greens are very well maintained, roll true and are consistent. We were a threesome, which made the 5 hour round more painful than it would normally be. I'll play it again, but am not in any rush to do so.
Excellent Condition
I have played this course many times over the years. I have never seen it it such good condition. Nearly perfect. Greens were great, fairways were like green carpet. I felt like I was playing at a country club. Great job to the course super!!
NO SAND IN ALL BUNKERS
the bunkers are almost concrete.
Be careful your shot in the bunker.
they don't invest anymore. you know why?
a lot of people visit there everyday.
Nice long course...wing can be a factor
I've played this course often and have always enjoyed it...the only complaint I have is when I booked it thru Golf Now I was not informed the greens have been aerated, and I was putting on sand....
Rude Pro shop Manager
I was not informed greens were being aerated, and was met with rude manners in the Pro shop by one of the managers by him blaming Golfnow for not informing me of this . I will not be back.
Best for the $ in the 5 boroughs
Marine Park is very flat and very long with some pretty difficult putts based on the pin placement. The greens are in good shape though and the work they continue to do with the burms in between the holes is giving it more character than the former glorified city links course. The staff is of mixed friendliness. Treat them with respect and you likely will receive the same in return. Cant beat it for $52 walking in prime time since its close to my house, The pace of play can be very slow like all city courses due to overbooking and the quality of some of the golfers. Expect anywhere from 5 to 6 hours on a weekend.
NYC -golf
Major renovations done, green and fairway are in great shape, immediate rough long, they are still working the traps and outer rough. Great deal for NYC. They do have 200; 150 and 100 yd makers, put could use yd makers on the par 3s.
Great greens
This course improves every week. It by far the best course in NYC.
course itself is average.
The course itself is average. I would play here again, however, the duration time to finish the 18 holes took me about 6 hours. Very very, extremely slow pace and way over crowded..
Unrealized potential
Would have given 4-star review had I not been privy to some very unprofessional commentary by certain staff members in front of multiple customers.
Course has the potential to be one of the best in the city with some hands-on management
Pace of play was unusually slow and rangers do not seem willing to make the necessary corrections.
Bunkers - Boring
Sand traps are concrete traps.
Aside from the greens which are extremely challenging, there is very little hole variation (only a couple of doglegs, very little elevation change, no water hazards, shallow bunkers, no thick rough). This course rewards long hitters and good putters.
Marine Park: Ever Improving
Marine Park is more, or less, my home course. It's less than 5 minutes from my house, so I play there very often, and have been playing there for almost 15 years. In that time, there has been a vast improvement in the course, and the facilities.
The tee boxes and fairways are in fantastic shape, and Marine Park's greens are the best, and most challenging in the city. You don't want to stray too far off the fairways, though. The course is built on an old garbage dump, so old glass sometimes leeches up in the rough. Also, the older bunkers need to be fixed up a bit, and have new sand added.
New mounding and bunkering adds to the links feel of the course, and enhances the beauty. More is coming, too.
Marine Park is about playing the wind. It can blow pretty hard off of Jamaica Bay, so be prepared to get creative in your shotmaking. It can also make the longest course in the city, at 6800+ yards from the back tees, play even longer.
The only drawback of all the improvements, is that the popularity of the course has increased, so the pace of play has slowed. 5 years ago, you could count on a 4-4 1/2 hour round, pretty consistently. Now, count on 5 hours, or more.
Still, Marine Park is a good test, and an enjoyable place to play.
