Convenience is the only thing going for this course
I'm shocked by these reviews. The course conditions are terrible: tee boxes are chewed to dirt, greens are mess, traps are garbage pits. It's also a cheesy par 64 with 0 par 5s and very short par 4s. I only hit driver 3 times on 18 holes and never needed an iron longer than a 7. Course layout is INSANELY tight - I had balls flying across my fairway and even tee box quite often. Pace of play was awful - went off 30 mins late and took 5 hours for 18 holes. BUT it's a quick 30 min drive from New York City, so if you're a captive urban golfer with 0 other options, it's better than nothing.
Pace of play was horrific
First time playing this course. They didn't let us into the course until roughly 10 minutes past our tee time and there were three groups waiting to tee off in front of us, so we did not tee off until roughly 25 minutes past our tee time. We waited on every hole we played. We finally called it after waiting 15 minutes to tee off on the 8th hole. It took us almost 2 1/2 hours to even get that far. Paying $70 for a municipal course (that genuinely was a fun layout to play) with that kind of pace was extremely disappointing. Get a ranger out there to keep things going and maybe we'll consider coming back.
Backed up
Our tee time was 1136 we weren’t able to tee off until 12. We didn’t get to hole 9 until 3:30. At which point we had to leave. There were literally up to 4 parties waiting on a single tee box at any given time. Worst part is they didn’t offer a courtesy round or anything for the inconvenience. Their excuse was it’s the weekend?? BS I’ve played there many times on the weekend and this have never happened this was poor course management and lack of a ranger to help with pace of play.
Not for me.
Course wasn’t in bad shape. Super short par 64 course. Greens are slow and full of ball marks. Tee boxes are chewed up and uncut.
No practice/ warm up area other than a tiny putting green.
No course ranger.
Pace of play was super slow with a TON of inexperienced golfers playing military golf ( left, right, left, right)
Not my worst experience but there plenty of better options in the area.
Short but fun
My wife is a beginner golfer. I chose this course for her to start up her first golf outing. We spent only 3 hours to finish 18 holes.
Kissena on a Monday
I’ve played the Kissena golf course many times.
Kissena is lots of fun helped by several par 3s
of varying lengths and difficulty. The staff are friendly and helpful. Today, my round started in a light rain. I was wearing a heart monitor and wasn’t supposed to get it wet. When I told the starter Paul that I had forgotten my rain jacket he
took off his jacket and gave it to me to use until the rain stopped. He had never met me. He literally gave me the metaphoric shirt off his back.
What a warm and generous gesture! I’m still touched. Paul’s gesture of kindness exemplifies what a terrific golf experience one had at Kissena.

Great conditions
Played here once before. The course is in fabulous condition. Codos to the maintenance team for the work in keeping it this good.. also the starter Paul was very personal and friendly and asked if we needed any help. A totally great experience. Looking to return soon. Lacking bathrooms but for us guys the woods is fine.
Short, but interesting golf course
I've played Kissena many times. It's short, but with some interesting par 3 holes. The staff is very friendly. Post COVID prices are ridicules', but the craziness is everywhere. This place needs some investment money to fix pathways, to install ball washers, to patch some bold spots. We always say: Aaa, it's OK for a public course. Nooo, fix it and make it worth the $59 before lunch price!
Nice and short but tests your game
Played on a Saturday morning and we started about 15-20 minutes late unfortunately. The pace of play for the first 7-8 holes was a little slow, we thought we were going to have a 5 hour round. Around the 9th hole the pace picked up and we finished around 4 hours and 20 minutes. The course is in great shape, and despite its short yardage, it is pretty tough to score low. Almost every hole there was either someone on our fairway or we hit into another fairway lol. Other than some golfers almost hitting us without yelling "fore" or hitting off the tee while we were still in the fairway, it was a really nice time.
Good shape for a public course
Kissena is good if you want to walk, and also if you're not looking for a huge challenge (no par-5s). They're doing pretty well with the overall condition, probably best I've seen it. Teed off at 7:30, finished by 11:15 but you can bet it's not usually that quick. Tee boxes almost all in great shape and greens were reasonably well maintained. I took a pic of one of the staff working on the 8th green, see below.
