Golfer Reviews
Great Staff, Terrible Course Conditions
We played Douglaston this past Saturday, and unfortunately this was one of the most disappointing rounds of golf my friends and I have had in a long time.
The day actually started off great. Check-in was easy, the staff was friendly, and everything seemed fine—until we reached the first green. That’s when we discovered that the greens had recently been aerated. There were aeration holes everywhere, heavy sand across the greens, and putts were bouncing and changing direction constantly. At times it honestly felt like we were playing Plinko from The Price Is Right.
What frustrated us most was that nobody told us about the aeration beforehand. There was no warning when we booked the tee time, and nothing was mentioned when we checked in. Had we known the greens were in this condition, we most likely would have canceled and played somewhere else. Golf courses need maintenance—we completely understand that—but golfers should be informed before paying for a round when the greens have just been aerated and are going to significantly affect play.
By the fourth hole, all four of us were seriously considering leaving and booking another course. We decided to stick it out, but it never became enjoyable. All four of us ended up shooting our highest scores in years.
To make matters worse, the foursome behind us was extremely pushy about our pace and repeatedly made us feel like we needed to rush. We weren't out there to hold anyone up, but we also don't play golf to feel pressured through an entire round. Golf is supposed to be an enjoyable, relaxing day with friends, and this turned into the exact opposite.
The staff we interacted with deserves credit because they were great. Unfortunately, the lack of disclosure regarding the recently aerated greens and the overall experience completely overshadowed that.
After this round, I don't plan on returning to Douglaston anytime soon—if at all. At the very least, golfers should be clearly notified when booking that the greens have recently been aerated so they can decide for themselves whether they still want to play.
Rain out air rate
we got rained out after the 7 holes, also the air raided greens made it very difficult to enjoy the game.
Nice small course but way too expensive and slows up on back 9 due to three Par 3 holes in a row (15,16 & 17)
Hands down the best city course
8:18am Tee Time - Saturday 8/15 - 18 Holes @ 4:20 Hrs
The conditions today, granted it was my first time, was as good as some country clubs I’ve played at. The tea boxes are normal and size and very well maintained. I’m not torn to pieces like many other public courses. The fairways are well grown and cut with proper contrast between rough and fairway. The greens were immaculate, very well cut, decent in size with average difficulty and decent firmness and speed. Many holes had actual working ball washers and water jugs, as well as seed/soil for your tee box divots. Bunkers, while I never experienced one today, were very well maintained and raked from what I could see. Beautiful settings all around. The only downside is no driving range to warm up and a few holes on the back 9 had a weird layout. 100% would recommend and I’m surprised this place isn’t ranked a lot higher in Golf Now or Eden apps.
No rain checks or refunds
Had to file a charge back because they didn’t want to offer a refund for lighting. We were on the 5th hole and paid for a full 18…. Not nearly a good enough course to be having such attitudes about rain checks.
Always a good round at Douglaston GC
The pace was slower than usual today due to some 1st time Golfers ahead of us.Unfortunately, I caught my left foot on one of the newly installed curbs by the putting greens and injured my foot, ankle & leg which effected my play (no excuses! Ha ha).
The managing company has put some money into the course and it shows. The fairways & greens are in very good condition especially for a public coarse that gets a ton of play.
I play here regularly and will definitely continue to.
Always a good value, greens in rough shape
You know what you’re getting but greens and tee boxes a little worse for wear this late in season. Greens had zero run and tons of ball marks
