Grey Hawk Golf Club
About
Grey Hawk Golf Club is a challenging but playable course that is a Cleveland area favorite. It brings resort-quality golf to a remote location in LaGrange that is seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The rolling landscape is the ideal terrain for links-style golf. The course demands accuracy with lightning fast greens surrounded by bunkers and be sure not to stray from the fairways or you'll almost definitely be left with an uneven lie. Unlike a typical links golf course, there are water hazards coming into play on several holes on this layout. The 11th hole features a tricky island green while the third hole has an equally challenging "island green" that is surrounded by sand. Grey Hawk Golf Club is a formidable but fair test with interesting and diverse hole designs.

Very challanging layout
This is one of my favorate courses. Lots of variety in holes and when you shoot low here you know you had a gret round, I did not give it 5 stars because the fairways are still in only fair condition. They were lousy last year and I can see where they have overseeded but the gass has not come in well. Looks to me like they just don't water the fairways enough. Rest of the grounds are in acceptable condition.
One of My Favorites
I usually try to play Grey Hawk 1-2 times per year when I have guests in from out of town and it is always a treat. The course is challenging but the length is very manageable. The variety of holes forces you to play every club in your bag and every type of shot that you possess. I made it through this round with 2 lost balls and considered myself lucky.
Tough yet beautiful course.
Phenomenal course layout. The grass in the rough and some other areas on the par 3's need a little but more attention but for 14 dollars the course was easily worth the money. Overall a very positive experience on a challenging course for the average golfer.
great course to play
very good course around the area of Cleveland Ohio a must play. The course is set up for all skills fairways a little rough due to no rain but still better that most I have played. greens were great.
Not as bad as it was made out to be
I booked this course without reading any reviews, and then was worried when I did. There were some spots on the course that needed some work, but overall I thought the course was in pretty good shape. I would definitly like to play hear again later in the year to see if the staff continues to improve the spots that need work. Overall I really liked the course layout.
Good links style track. One of few in area.
This course has a great links style challenging layout. I love the trains that run along side the course. Holes 7,8,9 are the best 3 holes back to back to back around. The newer Club house has good amenities and friendly staff. It is a bit of a drive for me but well worth if for the price. The fairway could use a little more attention but overall a great bargain.
A Little Rough
This course still needs some time to grow in. The rough was very patchy and you need to bump the ball around to find some grass to hit off of. The fairways are short, tight, and very firm, and the greens are fast but hold very well (even 4 and 5 irons sat down). Overall it is a good layout and with five sets of tees it can be a good test for any level of golfer. Water comes into play on a majority of holes, but if you have good course management and avoid poor shots you will not lose many balls to the hazads. The yardage markers are accurate and wind is a factor on most shots.
Nice layout but course needs work
ice layout and very long and difficult from the back tees but the course is still very barren in spots, the multitude of sand traps have very little sand in them. Fairways have holes where grass used to be. THe greens were fast and nice. The staff was tremendously friendly and we got a deal where it was $19 for 18 and a cart which was phenominal however I would never pay full price. Hopefully they will continue their efforts at getting it back
a decent deal for 27$ , but not a penny more...
having grown up in the area, Grey Hawk was always considered an elite course. I dont know what happened, but the course needs help. The clubhouse is beautiful, lockerroom is immaculate, and course design and layout are nice. Unfortunately, I was there for the golf, not the ammenities. Its only may, and the course wasnt really green, had lots of patchy grass, traps were horrinle and in need of more sand.... Just really disappointing. On golf now it was 27$ bucks when i played, and i guess for the money it was a championship course with a run down public course maintenance feel.
Yes it needs work but is still worth playing.
Lets get it out of the way....the fairways need work. There are lots and lots of bare patches. With that being said its still a course I would play again. The layout is fantastic! The greens are pretty fast and better than most. The staff I interacted with were all very professional and pleasant. Its a course you should play just because of the layout. I suggest keeping an open mind and be forewarned about the condition of the fairways. Other than that you should enjoy your round at The Hawk.
The design is very good, greens are in good shape for this time of the year but the fairway are in bad shape with patches. traps had no sand

needs work !!
faiways & greens needs alot of attention !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great design
I drove from Mentor to play this for the first time today. I am a member at Mayfield Sandridge so I only like to play the better public courses. Like many of the reveiwers, I think the fairways need serious attention. The course itself, though, is remarkable. If it was in the condition of Fowlers or Boulder Creek it would be the best public course in NE Ohio. Anyone who loves golf will appreciate this course. Two island greens (one of sand, the other of water), which is rare in Ohio. A lot of water and some tight fairways, so it will be challenging if you aren't accurate off the tee. Long and tough par 5s. A few par 4s that really make you think. It was my first time playing the course and I shot -1 (71) from the tips. Good scores are obviously out there if you keep it in play off the tee.
Every hole has a challenge and you need to think your way through it. Design is great, but course management has to overcome its maintenance mistakes
Course plays well, and it's always exciting to face the challenge each hole presents. Adjust for wind, lay and slopes of the rolling mounds. Greens are medium spring speed with subtle breaks that make two putting an accomplishment. The design reflects excellence that would make this course a pleasure to play if management overcomes its maintenance mistakes of 2012 - underwatered grass areas leaving tufts and even bare spots on several holes. The course is too tough to "play it down" under these conditions. Hope it comes back to the condition of a couple years ago when it was among the best courses in Northeast Ohio.
4 stars, Carl? C'mon! The course is unplayable. Its not difficult to play it down, its impossible. Only the tee boxes and greens are in satisfactory condition. The fairways, rough and traps are unplayable. If you don't mind rolling the ball all over the course and moving it in the bunkers (or putting out of the rock-hard traps), then I suppose you can give it 4 stars. As a community leader and avid GH golfer, you need to raise their expectations, not lower yours!
Great course for the price!
This was a challenging course for the average golfer, there was a lot of water and bunkers. The fairways needed some work due to lack of grass and the sand was rock hard(a lot of rain a couple days before). The price was just right and the course is set up pretty nice. I would not pay full price for this course but I would come back for a deal. Overall great course for a great price.
Challenge combined with beauty
Though challenging in its layout, five sets of tees makes this links-style course playable for any level of golfer. The difficulty presented by integrating a golf course into a housing community is overcome by an intelligent use of water and the creative placement of trees. As observed in some of the clubhouse photos, there are often excellent vistas. Interest and difficulty are introduced by precise use of sand and waste areas. On many holes, there was a nice balance of risk/reward opportunities adding to the overall enjoyment. Though not as manicured as the summer will allow, conditions were fine for early spring golf.
Spring
We went to this course at the beginning of april so the course was just coming out of winter. The condition was good for the time of the year but the value for the money was worth it.
Exactly what it should be
For playing here on a 30 degree day in March, the course was exactly as it should be. Greens were not fast but were smooth, tee boxes and fairways short enough to be playable but not soaking wet from snow thaw a couple of days prior. Great staff.
Great design, horrible condition
This is one of the saddest stories in all of golf. What was once a proud, up-and-coming championship caliber course has become the punchline of bad jokes. Its a fabulous layout - one of the most fun in the entire state. To be fair, the greens are above average. If ball marks were repaired, the greens would be excellent. The tees are decent, although the repair sand needs some seed in it. The fairways, rough and sand traps are all terrible. The fairways are completely burnt up and void of grass, and although they were aerated this fall, the course did not apply new seed or fertilizer. You have to move your ball just to find some grass to hit from. The rough is simply unplayable without 'rolling' your ball. Where there is grass, its choppy and clumpy. You could easily hurt yourself trying to play the ball down. The sand in the traps is low quality dirt. Its crusty and inconsistent. Overall, the course looks bad and plays awful. The ownership does not care about course conditions or quality service. The course staff does the best they can with what they have. The clubhouse staff is friendly, given what they have to deal with. The restaurant has gone completely downhill. And, although the food is generally above average, the service is pitiful. It is now basically a cafeteria with a bar. So, unless you want to play an unrelentingly disappointing course with poor service, I suggest you go elsewhere. Wait until the course and service improves, then go back.
One of my favorite courses in the area
The course conditions are rebounding from a tough summer. The greens and the areas around the greens are in great shape. Each hole is uniquely designed to make the overall experience challenging and rewarding. It is not a course for the beginner. It is a hidden gem that does not get overplayed. It is the the course I play most often outside of my league.
To be fair, the greens are better than average. They've recently been verticut, so in a week or so they'll be pretty good. If the course management would ever encourage players to fix their own balls marks (+ and 1 more), the greens could be excellent. The fairways, rough and traps are horrific.
