Grey Hawk Golf Club
About
Grey Hawk Golf Club is a challenging but playable course that is a Cleveland area favorite. It brings resort-quality golf to a remote location in LaGrange that is seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The rolling landscape is the ideal terrain for links-style golf. The course demands accuracy with lightning fast greens surrounded by bunkers and be sure not to stray from the fairways or you'll almost definitely be left with an uneven lie. Unlike a typical links golf course, there are water hazards coming into play on several holes on this layout. The 11th hole features a tricky island green while the third hole has an equally challenging "island green" that is surrounded by sand. Grey Hawk Golf Club is a formidable but fair test with interesting and diverse hole designs.

nice design
Good layout with nice greens but have not raked a trap in months. If you design a course with traps being a large part of the penalty by design your maintenance should be committed to keeping the traps prepared. To me it shows a lack of commitment to the quality of the course.
Great condition, food is top quality
Nothing to do with the course, but we got rainied out. I have a nine hole raincheck refund requested emailed into GolfNow at this time
It may be a championship quality course in terms of difficulty but the fairways were not that great of a shape.
overuse of waste bunkers, many bunkers need to be attended to and the fairways were fine but also need to be tended to. Greens were in excellent shape though.
great place for the price
the course was quite challenging, require a variety of shots, the greens are in tremendous shape, fairways are a little sketchy, we tee'd off at 1:18 and was done at 4:10, shot 82 from the blue tees (obviously there was no waiting which was wonderful), i would definitely play again. one quick piece of advice. my buddy and i played together, after checking in we split up, i grabbed the cart and he went to the bar for a six pack of labatt blue, he met me at the cart shaking his head, i said "how much" $27 for a six pack. well downstairs where you get the cart they have a snack hut and labatt blue is $3 per can = $18 for a six pack. apparently inside you pay substantially more , would have been nice if the bartender would have told us. so get your beer at the snack shop.
Too hot
Grey Hawk is a beautiful, challenging course. The biggest problem we had was that it was 90 + degrees and the carts had to exit the fairway at about 150 yards from the green. We had to walk back and forth, over mounds, so often that we were too tired to finish and only played 14 holes.
Nice Layout
Good conditions considering all the rain lately. My preference is to play this course forward and enjoy the day. If you play the wrong box for your ability the course will be punishing.
Great layout, but course conditions have been hurt by recent weather & storms.
GreyHawk is a fun course, a demanding shotmaker's course. A wonderful mix of Par3's & Par5's, all with their share of water, and any wind at all can affect club selection & ball flight. This particular day was "cart-path only" which slows down play here due to fact cart paths are far from fairways hidden behind mounds. We did a lot of walking, with a number of clubs in hand for the next shot. Fairways are shabby, but it had rained for 12-straight days; the shame of it is nobody replaces divots & cleans up after their own mess. That goes for sand bunkers too, although most were filled with water (on the day I played). The greens are OK, but showing the signs of stress due to weather, humidity, and again the abuse of unrepaired ball marks leaving spots & future problems. If it weren't for GolfNow specials, I probably would not have played the course, especially until it can recover from recent storms in the area.
"The Hawk" is on its way back, give it another try and you wont be sorry
GreyHawk has taken a lot of criticism and most of it deserved (full price last year was ridiculous) but this year the course is making it's way back with a vengeance. The greens and tees were pristine, the much maligned fairways were playable and lush. Good irons shots were met with a comfortable thump and divot, the course is on its way back and for a challenging 18 get your buddies and head out there. I was VERY critical of Grey Hawk last year, this year I couldn't have been happier. The staff was excellent, i lost a club and they found it and brought it to me 2 holes later
Course was in good shape. Greens were fast and Pristine. Only downfall i have to say about the course is the sand needs attention.
Course was in good shape even with all the rain we have had in recent days. Greens were in great shape and fast. Only bad thing i would say is that they need to pay more attention to the sand traps...Great place to play for all levels of talent!
Course has unique features. Could use course ranger oversight.
Course has two island greens, one surrounded by sand and one by water, undulating fairways, multilevel greens. It was frustrating to see a foursome jump ahead of us on the 6th hole of the course and drastically slow down play. Perhaps a starter or course ranger could have prevented this.
Not quite what it use to be but getting there.
Gray Hawk has had condition problems over the past couple of years with it's fairways and rough and I only played there once per year versus several times because of.
Now the and fairways and rough are coming back (June 2013) so for around $45 bucks on the weekend, it's a good deal.
Greens are always fine; some of the best around.
And 7, 8 and 9 could be the toughest finishing front holes around.
Course has some great holes
The fairways were in much better shape than last year. And the greens and tee boxes were in great shape. There was only ground under repair on hole 3 and 9, but didnt really come into play. Just wish they could spend a little more money and turn the hard pan sand traps into real sand traps.
Course In Much Better Shape In 2013
I normally play Grey Hawk a few times a year. Last year the fairways were in rough shape. But everything was pretty good this year. The course is very challenging and has alot of different holes. I recommend to everyone to play this course at least once.
Needs a bit of TLC
Nice greens but fairways need attention in many areas. Could really be something with another $1mm invested in fairways.
very challageing
don't like this course it not for my game yet but some day it will and the pro shop service needs some help they are not in it for the golfer they are in it for the money standing behind the counter
we enjoy the course lay out
this course design has what my son and I find challenging
and we can play to what we feel are handicaps are.
course conditions
greens in good condition true rolls some fairways and roughs on certain holes in need of attention had to play winter rules rolling the ball
Love it, but...
The design of Grey Hawk reminds me somewhat of Pete Dye's Heron Point, but without a $160 green fee! And that is its major flaw...Grey Hawk is not a resort course, but one in a rural community. The track is visually appealing and a joy to play. Yet, it must be a financial challenge to maintain; as evidenced by the continuing, overall condition of the fairways and the deplorable condition of the bunkers (There must be a 150 of them). Notwithstanding the present deficiencies, you should play this course. The clubhouse, food and staff are great. You will have an enjoyable experience.
This is such a great golf course
This is such a great golf course layout. Yes the course needs some maintenance (like about 100 tons of sand) but the layout and greens were great. I have golfed Pebble Beach (3 times), TPC Sawgrass, and about 20 of the top 100 US courses. This layout is one of the best in the area. If you want to experience a course which is like what the pros play here it is. I can't believe people spend 4 hours on "muni" tracks.
There are holes here also that you can't experience anywhere locally. For instance:
#11 - is an island green (yes boulder creek has one) but this one is longer and the cross wind makes it tough.
#7 - this long par 5 - has a tee shot that makes your knees twitch.
Overall - there are almost no holes that a yawner. It has a nice range and great clubhouse also.
