very speedy greens.
We played on Memorial Day so the course was pretty empty. Our pace was about 4:15 which is about average for Long Island. The place is named TALLGRASS for a reason. If you stray too far offline you will find yourself in high fescue. Overall the place could use a tad of sprucing but it's just nitpicking. The two factors that add to your scorecard are high winds ( I didn't know the wind could be in your face for 18 holes) and the speed of the greens which are like linoleum in some spots. Layout is great for the most part with interesting holes that aren't quirky. Plenty of bunkers and they can be penal.
one of the best on LI .....just keeps getting better every year
Great coarse .... great shape.....only problem is that the course you have better yardage markers not too easy figuring distances
Excellent Layout- really great value
We played in a steady drizzle, but the course held up really nicely. Greens were in excellent shape. Would have been very quick had it not been so wet. The layout is great, and I'm sure it's even more beautiful (and more challenging) when the fescue is all grown out. Looking forward to playing it again on a nice day.
great day
Beautiful spring day with light breeze. Greens were firm and true. Few people at the course this day when we teed it up at 11:20. This course is difficult when the wind is blowin'. Also, check for ticks after playing.
Over the years, this links style course is one of my favorites.
Unhurried and pleasant golf experience. Although it was a weekday, my foursome was kind of surprised to see not too many golfers on the course (not to mention that it was a pretty nice day). Course was in great condition.
Great course! Great Staff!!
I live in New York City and have played Tallgrass several times. Always a good positive experience regardless of how I play. Has turned into a favorite in the New York area. A lot of fun.
links golf at its best
Fairways and greens in great shape although greens were a bit slow. some tee boxes were resodded and closed but will be in great shape when they reopen. bunkers needed to be raked but hey it is december. overall course was very good
Great layout
I love returning to this course again and again because of the great layout. The golf course is wide open- there may be tall grass but no trees! As such, the wind will really play with your ball. The greens are always in great condition and provide a challenge to golfers of all abilities. I highly recommend this course to all golfers.
Wide open. You can really let it rip.

A lot of fun
I went to Tallgrass after reading about the course on golfnow and then looking up the web-site. i enjoyed the course so much I took my Brother in Law back on the weekend. We both played well and we had a Great time.
Course has many interesting holes. Has character.
Can be extremely difficult if your not on your game. The trouble spots can be extremely penal. Keep the ball out of trouble and you will have an enjoyable round.
good course very playable for all ages
This course is a very playable course for a senior golfer. It is not too lengthy, which is good for us older guys. At this time of year if you get into the rough it is playable ., i don't know if i could get out of the fiscue in summer time. Overall the course is well kept.
every hole different never boring
had one of my most relaxing rounds of golf.pace was excellent weather was beatiful course played great .greens rolled true.sand was soft/shot my best round of year.cant wait to go back.
Wrong time to play
I cannot give this rating a proper chance. When we arrived to play, we were told that only 9 holes were open and that they were just aerated. We chose to play the nine and while the course has an excellent layout, we could not get the best of it because of the greens. I was a little disappointed because we were not made aware of the aeration when we signed up for the tee time. Since that time, I have seen the aeration notice at the time of booking....a great improvement.
no warnings/discounts for aeration, conditions awful/dirty
played Tallgrass for the first time in years and had a good experience a few years ago. the conditions were awful. It was end of August and it is typical to be aerating then but the course gave no warning on its website or golf now. I would expect this from a course that is ranked by some publications as top 10 in NY.
Furthermore, the course offered no discounts for aeration - which would have been nice and is typical.
The course looked like it was no maintained at all. The fescue was spotty... bunkers had weeds... and trash everywhere. Simple maintenance and clean up would have been nice.
And at the start of the round, there was no starter at the first tee... thus it was a free-for-all.
The management needs to get their act together. I will not be making the trek back to tallgrass- which is a shame bc the layout and potential are there.
Interesting Course - Many Challenges
Being able to maneuver tee shot a must; tall grass borders the fairways. Enjoyed the course; paired up with a former collegiate player who hit the ball a mile but sometimes not in fairway; we never found some of those long drives. Playing smart is the way to play and enjoy this course.8/12/2012
