Wonderful golf course! Olde Stonewall never disappoints....always in very good condition and challenging. The staff across the board is friendly and professional. If you are looking for a great day of golf I would highly recommend checking out Olde Stonewall.
Well worth the drive
Olde Stonewall is a little off the beaten path in Ellwood City, PA but once you get there, you will find it well worth the drive (and the money). Five different tee sets allow for most golfers to find a comfortable distance to play. As a warning, this is a PAR 70 golf course, so add 250-300 yards for the two missing par 5's. I have seen golfers play the black tees at "only" 6681 yards and have a very tough time, probably because it's more like a 7,000 yard standard course. Trust me, the 6200 yard white tees are more than enough for anyone but a single digit handicapper.
The par 36 front nine is less demanding than the par 34 back 9, which may be the most difficult 9 holes that I have ever played. In general, it is a second shot golf course with limited safe places to miss around the greens, especially on the back. Greens are excellent but not tricked up (maybe a couple are a little over the top if they speed them up).
For scenic views, go to the back tees on 13 and 16 and you can see for miles. The staff is is incredibly friendly and accommodating, the pro shop is well stocked and well managed. The driving range is fantastic. The food at the restaurant is very good but the service, especially at the bar, can be a little slow. All in all, a day at Olde Stonewall is a very good day.
Tuogh and beautiful
Best public course I have played anywhere. I watched a bald eagle sore along the creek. The greens were as good as any I have ever played. They have a great staff and pro shop. The food is really good too. If you want a real challenge go to the back tees. Good luck !
The best
Have played this course regularly for 6 years and do not think there is any course around as great. The course is kept in perfect shape, the employees treat you as well or better than most country clubs. The pros are very professional and great teachers. They also have an outstanding restaurant. I have had the pleasure of playing a large number of country clubs and public courses and have not found any as satisfying as Olde Stonewall
Best course in the state!!
From the beautiful castle to the breathtaking views, this course has it all. The staff is excellent and more than helpful. The gentlemen at the bag drop start your experience with that of a country club. The staff in the pro shop continue that experience with kindness and a helping hand. The pro shop is loaded. If you don't see it they will find it or try and get it for you. Now the course. Not for the faint of heart. You must place your shots well. If you are off a bit you have to work but it's fair. Just spectacular! Very challenging but so beautiful. Fairways prefect and greens fast. Back nine is one that all courses should emulate. Just breathtaking. Recommend this course to everyone! When your done enjoy drinks and dinner with the best staff and food around. Just a delight!!
Best in Western P
I have ben a member now for 3 years, and after being a member of other so called "high-end" courses, I find Olde Stonewall to be the best in western Pennsylvania. It is challenging but fair, and you have to use all your clubs in the bag. The greens are near perfect and pace of play very solid. I would recommend OS foe anyone t any level. And the staff are the very best.
Great Memories
As one meanders through the country side one thinks where in the heck is this place. In the distance a castle comes into view. As one pulls up to the bag check area one is greater by a member of the wonderful staff. The pro shop is over priced and a tad snooty, but don't let it bother you, your money's green too. The diving range and practice green are tour quality and the amenities are wonderful, locker room, showers, great dining room or one can over look 18 on the veranda as groups come in. A Billy goat layout don't walk this course unless your prepping for the Olympics. A must pay in Western Pennsylvania.
Great course
1st time here great setup. Get your game tight on the front 9 you have to be really tight on the back 9. Surprised no par fives on back (doesnt really matter once you get there you have enough on you plate at that point), 14 and 15 par 3's is a lesson in iron play. 16 drive up to the very top (grey tees) best view I've had on a course put your big boy pants on and let it rip (240 just to clear the valley). I think it plays long enough you cannot club down and play safety golf (thank you!). Very much enjoyed and will be back.
Best Public Course I've played!
We live about a little over an hour from Ellwood City and we finally got the chance to play Olde Stonewall.
Started the round at 3:30pm and finished at 7:15 so pace was good, only issue was that we ran into a bunch of foursomes on the back 9, which slowed us down a little.
In terms of what shape the course is in, for a Public course, Olde Stonewall was in just as good shape as some of the most exclusive private golf courses I've played.
Greens ran extremely fast, some minor issues with a day of play and players not fixing their ball marks, but it was nothing to get hot and bothered about.
Every hole was beautiful, especially on the back 9, with drastic changes in elevation. Pictures on every hole on the back.
I've been lucky enough to play Oakmont Country Club, Bedford Springs, and Laurel Valley Golf Club, and for a public golf course Olde Stonewall stacks up with these three.
I liked Olde Stonewall a lot better than Bedford Springs, I just felt that every hole was different, where as at Bedford Springs some of the holes seemed very similar.
It's very simple for me, while I haven't played many of the public golf courses out East, for me Olde Stonewall is the best public course in Western, PA..
Excellent Golf Course - (Review from scratch golfer)
Very fun golf course to play. Elevations are stunning. No two holes are the same. Fairways are as good as you will ever play. Greens are pretty good, but a bit grainy. You should definitely play this golf course as the views are beautiful and the holes are very unique. Golf carts have GPS which is needed to navigate between holes. Highly recommended and worth the $150 green fee.
Spectacular Golf Experience
We flew in from Florida to play this course and it did not disappoint. In fact we played it the second day and have already planned a trip back up there in September.
Pittsburgh's finest "country club for a day"
Olde Stonewall is the undisputed king of daily fee golf surrounding Pittsburgh. No other public course can match its scenery, conditioning and interesting clubhouse experience. The giant castle features a popular restaurant inside.
While the front nine has some nice holes on flatter ground, the dramatic back nine takes Olde Stonewall to higher heights - literally. The back-to-back par 3s at nos. 14 and 15 are both drop-shot holes over intimidating hazards. Even if you're not playing from the tips, head back to the gray tees on no. 16 for the epic view. It took me two tries to hit a tee shot safely over the 230-yard carry to reach the fairway far below. What a thrill.
Rude professional and staff
Nice course, but ground keepers out of control. Hole #2, ground keeper in a cart passed in front of me as I hit to green from fairway, came 1 foot from his head, hitting top of his cart. Hole #3, parked at tee box, only to have ground keeper in large riding blower ram our cart. After that my wife and I were shaken ruining this expensive round of golf. Called the pro shop and pro came out to check cart was ok to finish the round. He told us to stop in the pro shop after the round, so we did. Pro no where to be found or hiding. Left our contact info, no response.
fantastic layout and beautiful scenery
played 9 holes on saturday and was rained out. staff provided rain check for remainder of round played next week. hooked up with 2 members who provided valuable info on shot placement, but played back nine alone with no local knowledge. quite a difference. wonderful course and great pro shop staff.
Better than any CC in Western PA
Expensive for our area but the best carts and GPS system available. Everything is well maintained. Layout can be challenging/daunting for a handicap above 15. A unique treat for Western PA. Take a small camera for some great photos from the tees on the back 9.
beautiful course. really special. greens were awesome.
Probably the best public course I've ever played. Highly recommend playing The course. Great value.
Amazing golf course
Staff friendly and informative. Course beautiful ...worth every dollar .
If in the Pittsburgh area do not miss this place !
What a Challenge
Rain caused the course to shut down the fairways, Cart path only makes for a long day. This is not a complaint, I enjoyed the exercise.
Amazing Course
Fantastic views and course. Stunning hole designs as well as the classic rock scenery that makes the course Olde Stonewall. All the holes make you gasp and you almost don't want to continue and just look all day. It was a challenge though don't get me wrong. The further up the hills you go the more accuracy is required. All in all it is completely worth the price to play and I would be going back again in the future.
