Pittsburgh National Golf Club
About
Formerly known as Deer Run, Pittsburgh National Golf Club has undergone major renovations since management has changed hands over the years, including complete reconditioning of the greens and the addition of 60 new renovated bunkers. The championship golf course that exists today is more challenging than the original though it has retained the same playability. With no blind shots to be found and wide fairways that are player-friendly, the course is inviting to beginners and also offers a casual but interesting round for more advanced players. During the renovation, the club also added a practice facility that includes a grass driving range with heated hitting stalls for year-round use, it is one of the only public grass ranges in the Greater Pittsburgh area. There is also a putting green and chipping area with sand bunkers.

Slow play
I love the layout. The course played firm. Challenging. The pace of play was unbearable at times. We started as foursome and lost our other two as a result of the slow play. Another twosome joined us and quit a few holes later. They let an inexperienced five-some out on a Saturday morning. We saw one ranger the entire day and he did not address the slow pace of play. PNGC has the potential to be one of the top destinations in the area but not with 5+ hour rounds.
Review
Average. Average. Average. Greens bumpy and inconsistent.
Okay
For $30, pitt national is a pretty good value. With that being said, it's still not the golf course it was 5 years ago. The layout it great, but the conditions leave a lot to be desired.
Nice course for the discount price
Our foresome played Monday afternoon and had to let 5 onesomes or twosomes thru, somewhat distracting being pushed at times. Course in good shape considering all the rain recently. Nice layout, always enjoy playing here. Bar / restaurant was CLOSED when we finished at 5:15!

Course in good shape considering the time of year and the awful weather in Pittsburgh in 2015. I do have to say that there needs to be more time in between groups. On Sunday morning, groups were scheduled 7 minutes apart and as a result we waited on nearly every shot. It had little to do with cart path only (due to wet conditions), just questionable tee times. Otherwise, an enjoyable round and I suggest going there.
Golf Course is a Thumbs Up
Having played this course since its inception, this club has been through good times, on the brink of closure only to be saved and for the most part returned to its heralded beginning.
This course is well designed; with large greens, wide fairways, and multiple tee boxes that provide a fair challenge for all skill levels. The addition of a too small short game area is welcome although I never could understand “no chipping” signs on the putting green (five times the size of the short game green) that mirrors what players find on the golf course. Despite the rain over the last few weeks, greens and fairways were quite good! Unfortunately that same rain has played havoc with tees and bunkers.
My middle rating and the head-scratcher is the lack of customer service. In fairness, the gentleman at the bag drop was really in good spirits and very personable. The Pro Shop, restaurant and rangers all seemed to be collectively having a poor day. BTW- the new restaurant is appealing, only had adult beverages post round.
Not sure this course deserves the the premium GF’s it charges. However, I recommend the golf course.
Pgh national
Only played 13 holes when rain came. Was going to try to wait it out and have lunch but was told kitchen closed and only serving hot dogs and cold sandwiches
Very nice course
Very nice course, pretty tough. Staff was nice aside from the guy who brought us our cart who was pretty rude. Other than that great time.
Good Value
Course does not drain particularly well but an excellent layout and very good value for the money. Greens were in very good shape. There could be more organization in the pro shop in terms of having a starter make sure players are starting on time. Additionally the course was cart path only when I played but there were no signs indicating this nor was I notified at the pro shop. Overall a good public course and a fantastic value for the Golfnow specials.
Lame
The course has weeds in the fairways and there a bunch of dry spots. They are now in my opinion a low tier golf course and only worth the $18 it costs to play 18 holes
course is in good shape
for the amount of rain we have had lately. we were able to go everywhere needed without any mud problems.
entire course was in good shape, greens were great, even the sand traps were playable if need be.
Fathers Day Round.
Course was in good shape. Especially for all the rain we had. Turned out to be a Great Fathers Day round. The greens were in great shape to. For how wet they were they still played fast (showed who the rookies were "My Dad") Booking threw Golf Now only took minutes to do. The ranger was out on full patrol to which is a good thing to keep play moving. Play can get slow there but they took a couple trees out to speed play up. Also if your a 5-10 handicap you might want to play from the tips. Test yourself its a great course to try. Also took 22.00 off my buddies. WINNING.......
Yeah... OK
This is a nice track. They have a putting green and chipping area (with sand traps) near the 1st tee, which is nice. Staff were few and no rangers that I recall. Overall it was not an unsatisfying experience.
6 hour round
Unless you like being behind a 85 man outing playing in groups of (6) and waiting after EVERY SINGLE SHOT, I wouldn't choose this course again. I made a tee time for a group of (2) around noon, AFTER paying for the round at the course, we were given " OH, BY THE WAY" we have a outing playing in six somes. Their suggestion was to play 2-3 balls each?!?!?! ( if I wanted to practice, id be at the range), After finally teeing off 1/2 hour late, we were not even able to finish our 18 holes on the account of it being almost 5:30 pm and only being on hole 15. The course itself is just ok, and It felt like they really didn't value our time or money. We most likely wont be back!
Downhill
Major downhill swing for this course. Used to be a great course 6 years ago, do not be fooled, it's a dump with a rude owner and staff. Restaurant was great food and service but the golf is not worth more than a $25 special.
good but getting shaggy
I really like this golf course. Four sets of tees so you can make it as long as you want. The course is well designed(no stupid holes). Conditions were good but not great. Some of the rough areas were looking a little shaggy and unkempt. It was still a great value.
Well maintained and interesting
I love this course. Elevation changes, nice layout, and great maintenance for a public course.
I was greeted with a cart when I parked and got a great rate on Golf Now. I think the usual $55 is a bit pricey.
My only grip would be pace of play concerns. I've been golfing alone lately and the pressure to group with unknown strangers on a fairly wide open Thursday afternoon was a bit obnoxious.
I will however always return when I can get a great GN rate.
The fairways and greens were in good shape.
I like this course because unlike most courses in Western PA, there are some holes where you can have a flat lie. The greens were in excellent condition and the rough was very forgiving, the bunkers could use some work. The pace of play was slow but I attribute that to the holiday weekend. I can't wait to play it again.
Nice layout
Pace of play was extremely slow and there was no ranger the entire 18 holes. When we checked in there were 4 employees in the club house yet no one on the course! Group in front of us had no course etiquette....driving on the par 3's, driving up to the fringe of the greens, not raking bunkers, etc... But with no ranger on the course, they did as they wished. Luckily the course was dry or the course would have been damaged. Would not recommend playing here on weekends. Course was busy and yet very little service. The cart service personnel were very nice.
Nice course
Challenging but fun. A little high in terms of price but very well kept and very scenic.
