Pittsburgh National Golf Club
About
Formerly known as Deer Run, Pittsburgh National Golf Club has undergone major renovations since management has changed hands over the years, including complete reconditioning of the greens and the addition of 60 new renovated bunkers. The championship golf course that exists today is more challenging than the original though it has retained the same playability. With no blind shots to be found and wide fairways that are player-friendly, the course is inviting to beginners and also offers a casual but interesting round for more advanced players. During the renovation, the club also added a practice facility that includes a grass driving range with heated hitting stalls for year-round use, it is one of the only public grass ranges in the Greater Pittsburgh area. There is also a putting green and chipping area with sand bunkers.

Continues to Improve
Kudos to ownership and the greens superintendent … this club and restaurant has nicely evolved from a few short years back. Staff professionalism and demeanor are welcoming and appreciated. The course is fun, a few stout holes however course is attractively designed, fair in length and difficulty. From the back tees, the course is not demanding in length, but all clubs in the bag are used and scoring possibilities abound. Greens surfaces are good - moderate in speed, receptive, medium sized with plenty of undulations that require a measure of feel. New practice area that looked good however was not open this morning (why no chipping around the putting green?!?)
Two things that give pause - pace of play tends to be slow and no walking on weekend mornings. Glad to see it return to its early years.
Nice layout and fun course
Course is still not back to where it was a few years ago, but you can see they are working at it, making some improvements and trying to get the greens and fairways back in good shape. I will play it again as the layout is great.
Good course for price
Good price for money - course was in good shape and speed of play was above average - the staff were all nice
On the brink
I feel this course is on the brink of being somthing special. However to many slanted or even tee boxes and i hate hitting down and up steep hills. However greens need rolled and they will play challenging.
First time and hopefully will play again
My son and I played early in the morning on a Friday. I am from Florida so the layout was completely different that what I am used to. I thought the course was great. We were not held up at all during the whole round. The greens were fine, in fact the whole course was fine. I liked the grass much better than Florida. Hopefully on my next visit to Pittsburgh we will be able to play it again.
nice course slow play
Enjoyed the course. Just a few minor complaints. Pace of play. Many groups playing wrong tees. Not playing the yardage that they should. Clubhouse staff was not very friendly and he couldn't even wait for us to leave the pro shop to finish his lunch. Traps were a little iffy in spots. Other than that it was a good day of golf. And the prices in the bar and grill were fantsstic.
Very Nice Course
Overall, it is a very nice course. Of the public courses in the area that I have played, it is behind Birdsfoot and Cranberry Highlands. The greens for us were slower and not as smooth as we expected. The pace of play was bad. We expected a ranger to speed things up, since we waited on every hole on the back. But, the course is nice and the layout is tough. We will definitely play again.
2:10 tee time didn't finish 18
Very poor job on there part jamming way to many people in with a high school tournament 2hrs 45mins on the front 9 only 2 of us that's ridiculous I would have rather been told they didn't have anything available than almost play a round of golf. Definitely not worth the 45min drive lots of other courses that can manage the simplest things like a clock much better! If I would have be able to play the round and finish in 4hrs give or take I would say it was an above average course with challenging pin placement very well maintained greens.
One of the best layouts I've ever played but could be maintained better
Liked the course! I don't think it's worth what they charge for normal price. I wouldn't golf there without the golfnow deals! Pro shop personnel weren't the most friendly people but I still had fun on the course
I have no desire to go back
This course used to be really nice, definitely one of the top public courses in the area.
Over the years it has become progressively worse. I get that some courses in the area get burned out in August, but I didn't expect this course to be as hard as it was. I hit the ball really high and usually leave craters for ball marks on greens, but my ball was just bouncing off the greens here.
The bunkers were awful. There were tons of rocks in them and they were hard like a baseball field.
The greens on the last 4 or so holes were in nice condition; however, all the greens leading up to that point were terrible. They had inconsistent grass and dirt patches. They did not roll true at all.
This course charges upwards of $50 on the weekends, which is way too pricey for the poor quality they are maintaining.
It is a shame.
poor experience
extremely slow play with no starters or rangers to control play/pace. Started late due to confusion by earlier group, no starter! Front 9 moved fine, then somehow multiple groups backed up on 10... pro shop said they did not let anyone extra out on 10, but hard to believe. Stopped after 13 due to slow plan.
Starting to come around...
Last time I came here for the first time and I was not favorable impressed. Today I came back to give it a second try and was much happier. The tee boxes are still in questionable shape, Pros: Fairways were well trimmed and the greens rolled fairly quickly. Nice layout, particularly the back nine. Was met at my car before and after my round by the friendly cart jockey.
Cons: Not much to complain about today. The tee boxes are still in questionable shape, some of them are extremely beat up. The fairway on number 11 was in pretty bad shape with some damage from carts and a lot of retained water. Finally, a cup of coffee in the morning (from the Keurig machine in the pro shop) was $2.50. Many courses will have complimentary coffee for golfers in the morning - not a huge big deal, but $2.50 for a cup of coffee seems a bit steep, especially when other area courses will have complimentary coffee for a.m. golfers.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by my return to Pittsburgh National. I will be back.
Local knowledge helps
The course was in good shape. Being the first time I played it, I wasnt sure of the landing areas and such, and it cost me on some tee shots. The next time I will know where to hit it, and where not too. First 5 holes were nice and level. After that it got pretty up and down. I think the course is on a par with Birdsfoot and Spring Church. Id play it again.
Excellent Course
This course is in great condition. It's fairways are in great shape and nice to hit off of and the greens are tough to maneuver, which makes for a great test of putting
Worth the Price
Nice course, not overcrowded. Friendly staff. Well managed. Enough difficulty to keep it interesting.
Good Course
Very good golf course. First time I played there, and the course is tighter than I thought it would be.
You have to be good off the tees or you'll pay for it.
Green are nice and roll smooth and fast.
But all that said it is a good test and a very nice course.
Terribly slow
Course condition was average, however the pace of play was AWFUL! Booked on golf now for 210 by the time we made it to the back 9 around 430 the 10th hole was 6 deep with a league going off. Had to replay the front 9. Not a good experience.
Plenty of nicer courses in the area
Have played here plenty of times in the past and it is currently awful! The tee boxes are sloped and mainly dirt, fairways are long with divots everywhere, greens are very inconsistent and dead in many spots. Pace of play was horrible and not a ranger to be found, grounds crew has no idea about etiquette and drive all around you while you are playing. The prices for food and drinks are crazy expensive; it's no surprise that the restaurant was empty! If you go here bring lots of money and low expectations!
nice course
the course was in good shape. some of the greens were not in the best of condition, but i think it warranted a $50 price tag. the pace of play was great; four hours. got out of the car and teed off five minutes later so we did not use any of the course's facilities. i heard the hot dog wasn't bad. all in all, an enjoyable round. i would do it again.
Has Potential
Played Pittsburgh National for the first time today - unfortunately, ended up having a disappointing first experience on this course. The course had some bunkers that were under repair or just being installed, and earth moving equipment was sitting out on the course during my round. The grounds crew were out cutting grass during my round, and on many holes I had to wait for the workers to turn off sprinklers or move from the green. I understand that you will have workers on the course during a morning round, but it made it very difficult to get into any kind of rhythm. One of the men mowing a fairway on the back nine was actually texting on his phone while operating the mower. I had to wait for several minutes before he even noticed me at the Tee box and moved off of the fairway.
Overall the layout was okay but nothing really special. There are other golf clubs locally with superior layouts and lower prices. I won't be making this one of my regular courses, but I will probably stop back in a couple of months to give it a second chance. Definitely will only come back to play at less than $30 - would not pay full price here.
