Pittsburgh National Golf Club
About
Formerly known as Deer Run, Pittsburgh National Golf Club has undergone major renovations since management has changed hands over the years, including complete reconditioning of the greens and the addition of 60 new renovated bunkers. The championship golf course that exists today is more challenging than the original though it has retained the same playability. With no blind shots to be found and wide fairways that are player-friendly, the course is inviting to beginners and also offers a casual but interesting round for more advanced players. During the renovation, the club also added a practice facility that includes a grass driving range with heated hitting stalls for year-round use, it is one of the only public grass ranges in the Greater Pittsburgh area. There is also a putting green and chipping area with sand bunkers.

Took three senior friends for first time
I believe that the new owners have made great strides in bringing back the old Deer Run into a well conditioned course, especially the greens. I took three senior friends who have never played there for our round. From the white tees at 6,000 yds. A good test for seniors. I booked on GolfNow for &29 which is a nice deal for this course. My only complaint would be that we arrived for our 6:58 tee time and no one was there. Waited for carts and to pay before teeing off. Other than that a very good value for the price.
Bad course workers
The golf course workers are terrible! They don't stop working to allow you to play. You have to wait for them. I don't know when the workers became more important than golfers playing. This used to be a great place with golf etiquette, when it was Deer Run. Now it has become just another muni. It is a shame!
Decent Layout- Back nine is more interesting
Not a bad course, but with leagues, letting groups off back nine, etc. it can get pretty backed up. The back nine offers some nice views and good elevation changes.
not a course to be missed
Pittsburgh National Golf Cub previously known as Deer Run Golf Club. I have played here since the cub opened about 20 years ago and have seen several ownership changes. The course has recently come under new management and I am delighted with all the upgrades and improvements being made.in the last 2 years.
New driving range and chipping areas, bar/restaurant totally redone in an English pub type environment with excellent food, sand traps all being redone, vastly improved grounds keeping with a return to a links style appearance. The greens are running smooth and true making it a great golf experience. Not a course that you want to miss..
I have played golf all over the world making it difficult to compare ratings. I will say that there is no question in my mind that Pittsburgh National Golf Cub gives you one of the best bang for your buck playing experiences on a public course anywhere in the Pittsburgh area.
Better courses for the money
It appears that they are making improvements such as number 1 being renovated with new sand traps, however the hole is a mess right now. Many of the sand traps are holding water and the weeds and clover are abundant. A few holes on the back nine are borderline health hazards with the amount of geese droppings. The course employees didn't start sweeping/cutting greens until we had 7 holes finished (teeing off at just after 7). The rates have been raised to $50 this year and there are courses in better shape for less money. This course has such a great layout and the old Deer Run was was well worth the $50 greens fee but you, Pittsburgh National, are no Deer Run.
Great layout but poor condition
I've played here many times and it is one of the best layouts around!!! However the greens are terrible. Almost every green has burnt dead spots. The greens are also vastly different speeds. Finally several holes, particularly the 1st have been under construction for quite a while. If they ever get the greens right again it can be one of the best in town.
Shell of what it used to be.
So sad a course with so much potential in the current hands. Range closes on Sundays at 5 ( 2nd busiest range time), spray pesticides on greens on a Saturday (busiest day) holding up play while waiting for this procedure not to mention walking through it without a chance to get watered in. Pro shop is never attended, have to search for an employee. Could go on and on. When this place was Deer Run it was a must play, we were out there 2-3 times a week playing or hitting balls, currently I'll avoid it.
National
Beautiful track. Got out early in the A.M. and played in less than three hours. Appreciate the deals they offer on golf now. The gentleman in charge of carts was extremely friendly and made me feel like a regular.
Course is coming back
Used to play this course when it was called Deer Run and it was one of my favorites. Went out of business and the place totally closed down and grew over. It's been a few years since they reopened and it's Finally starting to look like it used to. $50 is about right for a weekend rate, maybe $5-10 too high if anything. If you can find it for $30 or less this is a must play.
Not as good as it used to be
I remember Pittsburgh National in its heyday about 5-10 years ago. It is NOTHING like it used to be. They have sodded over some of the traps, the traps on number one are growing wildly with weeds and rocks in them. The tee boxes are a mess on many holes.
They still have the best layout in Pittsburgh, but if the course conditions aren't good, what is the point?!?! You tease us with your past beauty.
Charging $50 for this course is not cool. When it used to be nice, sure, ok. I've been waiting for years for this course to be restored to what it used to be and it just isn't happening. I used to play this course 10-15 times a year, now I sadly will only playe it if invited to by others.
Better
Very enjoyable round. Finished in just under 4 hours. Pace of play was excellent.
Will return. Greens in excellent shape.
Yes
Challengeing golf Links course , good condition fan to play
very nice course
an 80 minute drive for my foursome and well worth the drive one of the best course we play all year
Loved it!
Great layout that challenges every part of your game! If you are looking for an easy day, go somewhere else. If you are looking for a test, this is your place.
Expect a long day of waiting
Both times I played this course on a Sunday afternoon/evening... they had groups piled up on top of each other.
When you get to your tee box on time, and there's still 3 groups in front of you waiting to tee off... you know you're in for a miserable day. Seems like it's a matter of them being greedy... setting up tee times 6 minutes apart just doesn't work.
I couldn't imagine paying anywhere near the regular rate to play here.... besides the 5+ hour rate of play, the course was only mediocre condition at best... on a weekend full of sunshine.
$13 for a 6pack of cold miller is pretty reasonable for a golf course... so there's a positive.
Very Nice!
We have played golf for many years but never here for some reason. I'd have to place this in my top 5 in western PA. Very pleasant design and fair but tough.
Beautiful
Seems to be a good course, challenging, but the pace of play was really slow almost 3 hrs for 10 holes. We will go back one more time to see if it improves.
Not worth the money
Lets start at the beginning. I have played this course a couple years ago and had recently thought about playing it again. When I looked it up I noticed a significant price increase so i expected that a lot of improvements had been made. The weekend rate for this course is $90 so I booked it on golfnow to get a little discount ( $39 - which was still more expensive than most courses regular rates ). I arrived at the course and there was no golf cart. I walked in and paid and asked about a cart and the attendant had to call to get me a cart. Then my playing partner got held up at work and was a few minutes late (believe me I hate when the tee times are backed up too). Our tee time was for the afternoon so it wasn't that busy. I went in and told the starter and asked if we could flip tee times with another group that was there early and he said that would be no problem and not to worry about it. When we went ot the first at the next scheduled tee time that we switched to and had to wait for groups in front of us. Again we saw the started and thanked him and he said that it was no problem cause there were a few back ups on the course anyway. Once we stated playing I was very disappointed. We played to back tees. The tee boxes were terrible. There was not a level lie on any of them. The fairwas seemed lush by the rough was weeds and flowers. The greens were bumpy and inconsistent. I know this might seem picky, but I felt for the price they were charging I expected a lot more. Finally when we went into the clubhouse there were two younger staff behind the counter. While we were standing there I overheard them talking and they were referring to us. I overheard them saying that they couldn't believe we were late and that they would've never let us out and we would've been sent away if they were there when we came in. One of the two said he was going to follow us out and tell us about it but never did. It a nutshell this course is priced higher than most local courses but the quality is not there to support it. Some of the workers there were very welcoming but others need a few lessons in customer service.
Deceiving
When looking at the course as you approach the facility, it looks tough and tight. Besides a couple holes the course is surprisingly open. Greens were tough to read, but we will definitely return.
Traps and tees
The tee boxes and bunkers were in need of some serious work, other than that greens and fairways are nice.
