BlackHorse Golf Club - North Course

This course has one of the nicest clubhouses out of any course in the Houston. We played the north and the course isn’t that challenging. With exception of few dog legs, it plays pretty straight. The greens were in good shape, and played fast. The fairways and tee boxes were in okay condition. Overall I think it needs some more upkeep to be on par for the price that it usual is. One of my complaints was that the yard crew was trimming bunkers during play. They never stopped even though I was chipping 5 feet away. The office staff and Marshalls were great though. Overall I’d say this a 3.7 overall. A 4 for Houston public courses. If you can get a deal, I’d play. I don’t think, in its current condition, that it’s worth the full amount.

I’ve played this course just a couple of times over the course of the last few years (due to Covid-19) and this particular visit, the staff (with the exception of one person at the restaurant bar counter) was extremely polite, professional and welcoming!! They were thrilled that I was there and that made me feel special! That doesn’t happen much these days since the pandemic!

Played the North course. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens all in excellent shape. Bunkers were also excellent with white powder and ranked. Unfortunately I got to test these bunkers. :). Good variety of dog legs right, left, elevation changes, and open fairways. Really enjoyed our time.

If you like playing a course with hard fairways, and tight lies this is the course for you. It is generally better to be in the rough because you can at least get your club under the ball. The course has made it cart paths only on 4 holes on the south and one hole on the north for several months with little effect on the amount of grass in the fairways. They have also put cart restrictions on almost every hole located 100 yards from the green. While this is attempt to grow grass it is extremely inconvenient and doesn't seem to help.

The North and South courses are poorly maintained. Both courses are in dire need of water - hardpan on nearly every fairway (lies are usually better in the rough where there is at least a little greenery) and numerous unfilled divots on all the fairways. Sandtraps are poorly maintained - seldom raked and the amount of sand is inconsistent from one trap to another - sand depth in one trap will be a foot or more and the next one will have less than an inch before you hit the carpet. Most of the greens are like concrete - you will be hard-pressed to leave a ball mark with a shot into most of the greens. Old pin positions are not contoured to be level with the green surface (some are raised while others are sunken). Most of the tee boxes are not level and many have little if any grass on them.

Sadly what used to be two good golf courses are now turning into low quality muni type courses.

On the plus side, the staff are friendly and very accommodating and Roper's Grill has good food even though it is very loud. If the courses were as good as the staff and the Grill, the cost to play Blackhorse might be easier to take..

The course is not as challenging as Blackhorse South, but is a good test for an average golfer. Length is not an issue, but accuracy is important. The 3-4-5 trio of holes poses the biggest test. Number 9 is a difficult par 4 with a demanding second shot.

The back nine is easier and less demanding on accuracy with the exception of the par 5 finishing hole, which leaves little room for error.

The course layout is just unimaginative (south course) and the conditions do not warrant the cost. Almost every par 4 is the same if playing from The blue tees. . Driver, short iron. Holes 16-18 are actually very good. Everything before that is extremely pedestrian, imo. Better courses at better pricing available throughout Houston.

What a fantastic day. The BlackHorse Golf Club staff were (as always) helpful and generous with their time and gifts to existing and potential members. Let’s do this again! The course is in terrific condition. #womenoncourse

Really pretty course. Tough challenge as well especially with the wind blowing. Greens were good, not great. Awesome staff!

I mean geezus… this course should not be more than $50 during the week and $70 on weekends. $100+ for the North or South is robbery. This is the typical “overcharge the public to make it more enjoyable for the members” type deal. Just go private and call it a day. Blackhorse is waaaaaay overpriced. The most overpriced course in and around Houston hands down.

Once upon a time, both the North and South Courses at Black Horse were considered a step below many country club golf. But now, they are nothing more than average courses living off the reputation from yester-year.

The green fees are very high considering the conditions, and the course is always backed so you’ll wait every hole.

But the layout is still very enjoyable. And I’ll play it for the right price, but other than that, for $130+, I’ll pass.

Beautiful holes, course is in great shape, friendly staff, nice clubhouse. Enjoyed it! Will come back soon.

Excellent greens , fairways darn good for February. Pro shop friendly and helpful as was starter . Course had really good variety of holes , difficult but not gruelling and score able of playing well

A rare day in the 70s for February combined with a scramble made for a double whammy of a filled to capacity golf complex. Having two courses can be really advantageous but on this day…all the carts were in use and there was a 10 minute wait after clearing the pro shop. Then, there was a 20 minute wait until the scramble belatedly got going. I did finish just ahead of sunset but…had not one but two golf carts run out of power. Obviously time was insufficient to give returned carts a sufficient recharge. Might be time to purchase or rent some additional carts.
