BlackHorse Golf Club - North Course
About
The environmentally friendly Blackhorse Golf Club in Cypress was designed by Peter Jacobsen and Jim Hardy, who teamed to build one of the best 36-hole, daily-fee facilities in Texas. Designed to maximize the natural setting, this beautiful complex is a perfect setting for golf with its huge variety of oaks, elms, and wetlands that provide habitat for a wide variety of bird species. Holes 4-6 on Blackhorse Golf Club's North Course generally get the best of high handicappers. Holes 4 and 5 route through massive trees and expansive wetlands, both playing over 400 yards. No. 6 is the North Course's signature: a 180-yarder that tees over the bend of the creek to an elevated green enhanced with railroad ties and framed by bunkers.

Slow
Only saw the cart girl once for 18 holes and it was on the first hole....100 degrees outside and they can't pay some girl to drive a cart and serve drinks and snacks. Couse was nice but the pace of play is always slow as the tee times are every five minutes so they can pack the place. The guys that were playing in front of us didn't even have a tee time but the pro shop told the to just go because it's wide open.
Well Rounded Course
This course is good for all levels of players. It is challenging yet still leaves room for so a novice doesn't get too frustrated.
Great layout and fun for all abilities.
The North course at Blackhorse is a fun and challenging layout and the course is in great condition. The fairways are almost perfect and the greens, while hard and fast, are still receptive and roll true. The white tees allow the high handicapper more room to land tee shots and shorter approaches while the blue or black tees prove quite challenging to the more experienced and seasoned players. The GolfNow rates allow the frugile golfer to play one of the best courses in the city. Well done Blackhorse!
Oustanding condition
First time on the course in 2 years.
it's in outstanding condition and very challenging.
great value from the gof now site.
buzz
the greens had just been sanded i would not have played if i had known it.
South Course is Better
Recently played the North Course over the July 4th weekend. Played the course at $60 (GolfNow rate) as it was being aerated. Having played the South course in June ($50 GN rate), my overall impressions are the following:
1. South Course is much more visually appealing and challenging across 18 holes. While the North Course's front 9 can be challenging the back 9 is fairly wide open until the last hole.
2. Facilities (pro shop, practice areas, locker rooms) are top-notch and on par with Golf Club of Houston (formerly Redstone).
3. Employees are hospitable and very professional.
4. South Course is the course for better players and longer hitters.
5. Pace of Play was very good at SC and NC.
6. Mis-hits are not punished as severely as on the South Course.
7. The break of greens are difficult to read on the NC. More so than the SC. And I played both while under aerated condition.
8. Fairways and bunkers are perfect!!!
My 2 complaints with Blackhorse are 1) The South Course punishes you too severely for missing the fairway. It's enough for amateurs to lose strokes punching out from the woods, it's worse when we lose golf balls in the rough grass under the trees. At the end of the day, we are amateurs playing...NOT PGA tour members that have walking Marshalls with them that point to where their ball landed. BH should cut down some of these areas (grassy spots under trees) for better playability and pace of play on the South Course. 2) Value for these courses are okay at best, if paying FULL or close to full retail rate. I play 3-4 times of month at various NW Houston courses and I can't imagine paying more than $40 - $60 to play these courses, even on the weekend (maybe the SC).
All in all, if presented with a great rate from GolfNow again, I would definitely play again. Otherwise, now that I have played both course once, I am not strongly compelled to play there again.
Play Blackhorse
Blackhorse always does a great job. Greens had just been sanded and the edge of the cups were ragged, otherwise I would have given 5 stars. Fairways immaculate.
Top Notch Facility
Played the North course during the week and decided to play the South course a few days later. Deals on GolfNow were ridiculous! First off, the facility is top notch. You receive range balls with your green fee. You have to go over to the range where an attendant will give you your bucket. The range is huge! There are separate putting greens for each 18 hole course. There are immense differences in each course. The North course is a few shots easier. The front 9 on the North course is fairly difficult with water on nearly every hole. The back 9 on the North course is wide open off the tee with limited trees. It is very easy to score on as there is limited trouble. The greens are quick, but not over the top challenging. The South course is a different story. Each hole is demanding off the tee. The greens seemed a little quicker which made chipping more difficult unless you are comfortable playing the ball in the air. The layout was fantastic and strategic. To score the South course, you need to put your shots in exact locations to give you the proper angle coming into the green. The par 5 4th hole is an example. Hit the ball too far to the left and you are blocked off from the trees unless you lay back and play it as a three shot hole. Driving it beyond the rough is dead on every hole. The only hole that gives you a break is the short par 3 7th. The South course ends with some of the most picturesque views in Houston as you play around a large lake. There are two par 3's including the island green 17th which plays as a short par 3. The view on the green is spectacular. You also drive on a cart path that is about an inch above the water which is unique. Hole 16 is a 320 yard par 4 with the lake left and trouble right. The tee box will give you distances if you choose to drive the green or lay up short or right. The best play is to hit your tee ball about 50 yards short front of the green. The green is very small and if you hit too far to the right, you have to hit a very precise wedge to keep it on the green as sand is short and water is long. Overall, this is a must play in Houston. I'd advise 18+ handicappers to stick to the North course and only play the South if you have confidence in your driver and wedges around the greens. Both are in fine condition. I'd only play with a deal from Golfnow. You could pay around 80+ depending on when you play. We played the South for $29 and the North for $27. Both are steals.
Awesome deal and course
I rarely write reviews for anything so I am writing this to let people know the outstanding facility that Black Horse is. The staff was very gracious the course challenging and in good condition. You could tell the greens had been airated (sp) about three weeks ago; however, still great course conditions. I suggest playing earlier than later. We never had to wait and never saw anyone behind us. You can take a shower after your round and the pro shop will provide shampoo and a towel. I can't speak highly enough about this course. To me this is a 100.00 per round course. I don't live here so the round turning out this way was great. One last thing you better hit it straight this course will penalize poor shots.
Discount for punched Greens
I got this tee time for $59 on a Saturday (vs. $109 at full price), and I wasn't surprised to hear that the greens had been punched a few days prior. The course is extremely challenging, with the bermuda grown high around the greens.
Obviously, the greens were very bumpy at this time but overall the course was in fine shape.
First time I can honestly say I played behind a 6-some
I find it ridiculous that a course that charges this much money and has a semi-decent facility would allow six, yes SIX players, to play together and ruin the pace of play for the entire course. The marshals at this course are useless. Never going back.
Fairways good, greens had been punched earlier in week
Overall the course was in good shape considering all of the rain we have had in NW Houston. We booked our tee time for a reduced rate (which should have been a clue) for Thursday only to find out at the course that the greens had been punched on Monday. We had fun, only wish we would have known about the greens before we made the purchase.
blackhorse
when we got there it was very crowded. we asked the marshall if we could play the north. very beautiful but slow for a thursday afternoon.
Happy Father's Day
Excellent course after the amount of rain the week before I played. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Enjoy my trip to Black Horse completely.
Smiling faces with DISHONEST souls.
Smiling faces with DISHONEST souls. While these amazing courses are excellent to play, you need to watch your belongings! If playing in a tournament leave your cash in your vehicle. I know that most golf tournaments are for charity and there are many holes that have extras but the employees of this facility are dishonest. I realize that it was only one person that pocketed my money clip but they all "no nothing"!
I have walked away from several items during tournaments but they have always made their way back to me. NOT THIS TIME.
I will never play here again and will let all of my golfing friends know what happened to me here!!
Great value
Course was hit by flood waters one week prior and yet was in excellent shape. Compliments to their maintenance crew. This North course will be one of my first choices when playing the Houston area.p
Nice Improvement
I played the North course at Black Horse about a year ago and the course was in average condition at best. At the time the rough was so spongy and thick that any ball hit in to it was almost impossible to find. I was pleased to see that the have fixed the rough that while penal is still playable and doesn't make balls disappear. Greens were in really good condition and allowed for the ball to roll smooth. A little on the slow side but still gave a true roll.
June 8, 2015 BHR north Course
the North Course was in excellent shape especially considering it was under water a week ago. With the great discount, no free range balls and cannot tee off early and the cart lady was missing. we teed off at 2:20 PM
Great Track/Staff not so much
Well kept, challenging track, club house staff didn't really seem to care if you were there or not.
North Course
Played the North course and it was in great shape. Pace of play is slow as it usually is.The front nine is more scenic and the back plays tough if the wind is up since it is fairly open. The South course is more challenging. Got a great deal on Golf Now and that is the only way to play.
