The second, par-4, 409. A stern, uphill, tee-to-green test on a hole that plays longer than its yardage. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/21/2021

The fourth hole at Fox Hopyard features a spectacular drop to a raised green whose surface is some 70 feet below this tee. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/21/2021

Seven. Par-4, 395. Trouble for the unwary. It’s target golf all the way to the narrow green, but nonetheless a fine hole. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/21/2021

Fourteen (224). Another strong par-3 here. You’ll need an excellent tee shot to find the surface. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/21/2021

Eighteen, par-5, 551. My playing partner rips a drive up the fairway. This robust finisher will put your skill to the test. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/21/2021

Eighteen, as seen from across the pond, near the entry drive. A ribbon of fairway; a green set hard by the water. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 09/21/2021

Great experience.
We had a great day at Fox Hopyard. It started with the pro shop being fantastic. Pro matched my buddy and I with another twosome that he thought would make a great foursome. He was spot on. We all had a blast. The pro started the day off right and it kept getting better.
The course was in fantastic shape with the greens really fast and true. Fairways were cut short and in great shape. We had a great back nine match with the other two guys that came down to the 18th. So much fun.
We got the hot deal of the day for around $50 and couldn’t have been any happier.
Great course.
Like everyone else has said this place is awesome course, definitely a must play in CT.
I really liked the layout.it was challenging but playable.
Ron and Brian are very nice and helpful.
I'll be back again this summer.
Outstanding
Fabulous course with beautiful layout. In good shape, played it down. Great value for the $. A bit crowded, brief wait on every tee and in most fairways but still played in 4:25. Not from the area but would definitely play again if near.
Great course
Love playing this course, very fair, staff helpful and pleasant.
Must play this course
If there’s such a thing as a perfect golf course this is it. Spectacular experience. Just play there. You will be thrilled.
Visited again after 5 years
Well maintained, greens sweet, ( and rolled !) Better than I remembered it from 5 years ago. Staff freindly and helpful. Played in 1:45, single in a cart first one off.
Great Day
Love this course. Got a bargain with a Hot Deal and had a great day. Entire staff was super helpful and friendly. There was hardly anyone on the course when we played, so I couldn’t help but wonder if the regular greens fees are too high for most people. I think if they lowered their rates they would get more traffic and make a lot more on additional purchases in the pro shop and grill. We got lunch, dinner and drinks there. All were good. Absolutely no complaints about anything. We’ll definitely go back, but we’ll wait for another deal.
East Haddam, CT GEM
I've played this course several times. It is kept in great condition and allows for a "links" type experience. Great layout and often challenging pin placements. Highly recommend especially when Golf Now has hot deals.
Excellent day
Fantastic day of golf. Every aspect of the round was top notch, from the conditions to the staff and even the golf carts were the nicest I have ever seen. We drove about an hour to play but all four of us agreed we will be back soon.
Gem of CT
This course has everything. And with the hot deal I got $50 was well worth it. Played a 4 hour round that was not rushed. Greens were fast, smooth and true. New electric carts with GPS was an awesome addition to an already great course. I have played this course 3 times this year with no disappointment.
Great track
If you can find a deal, it’s well worth it. I find it too expensive at the regular rates. Well thought out layout. Some wide fairways and some layup shots. Definitely one of the better public courses in ct
Sick
Place is legit. Would play here every day of the week if it wasn’t a 45 minute drive from me. Difficult layout but scoreable.
Putt at your own risk
The course was in good shape for spring conditions. The grass in the rough has not started to grow yet, so any off fairway hits run forever. Easy to lose a ball. Same with the grass around the green. Hit in too strong and there is no grass to slow your ball down. Putting on aerated greens with sand requires a Happy Gilmour approach of a hard slap shot to get to the hole.
Great layout
The layout of this course is o e of the best I've played... every hole is different. My only complaint is that they didn't have a warning on golf now about the greens being punched and sanded. The greens were literally rolling a 4. I wouldn't have paid to play, and for the price there is no need for a course not to let you know the conditions.
Spring Golf
I took advantage of a little better weather to play a round. The course was in good shape but due to the cold spring the grass in the rough was still dormant but the fairway has started to begin to green. Putting was a challenge because they recently aerated and sanded the greens. This made them putt extremely slow so it took the front nine to get used to really whacking your putts. Fairways were dry and drainage was good.
Scenic and challenging, but certainly playable
I’ve always been a fan of target golf, quite frankly, mostly because I’m pretty good with my medium and short irons and terrible with a driver in my hand. While I wouldn’t classify Fox Hopyard as a target golf course, it did set up well for me. At around 6500 from the blue tees, it’s really a 200-215 yard shooters (read: me) paradise. I’m just not sure how many holes you’d even want to hit anything beyond 250. The fairways tend to narrow and get more protected beyond that.
There is a good score waiting for you, if you play this course patiently and don’t try to do too much. Having said that, there is enough in the way of hazards – between water, trees, and the occasional bunker - to make for a long afternoon if you are overly aggressive and aren’t striking the ball well.
This course is lightly bunkered, but uses angles, elevation changes, and its densely wooded surroundings well for protection. What bunkers there are, it should be noted, are well placed and can certainly be found if your shot is even a little offline. There is also a decent number of water features scattered around the course in form of ponds, creeks and marshes.
Fox Hopyard is nothing if not scenic. I found the numerous rock walls particularly pleasing. Using these, along with a variety of short carries over marshes and other water that really isn’t overly in play, the course does a nice job of providing an attractive aesthetic without being overly threatening.
There’s a good amount of variety in the design of the holes. Even holes which play the same like the back to back par four 6th and 7th – each calling for a 200-215’ish drive to a dog leg left, leaving another 180 or so into a tucked away green – feel completely different because of their design elements.
Be sure to bring your thinking cap, or abacus, there will be some calculating to do with regard to club selection because of the significant elevation changes on some of the holes. Number 4, for example drops nearly 90 feet over its 180 or so yards while the par five 5th loses over 100 feet of elevation before rising back up about 15 feet right in front of the green.
Most of the holes on this track also enjoy a certain amount of privacy. There are very few adjacent fairways so we often felt alone on the course (never a bad thing). This was especially true on the front nine, and really added to our experience. We played behind a twosome who we didn’t see after the third hole and pace of play was good while we were on the course and appeared to stay that way as we watched groups come in behind us and make the turn after our round.
The staff at Fox Hopyard was great both in the pro shop and around the course, and the grounds crew was particularly considerate and polite. Overall, we really enjoyed the round and would certainly return if the opportunity came up.
