Nice Saturday Morning Round

Short but still potent, Chanticlair sports a varied layout highlighted by an island green at the fourth. The nine-hole course starts with a series of open holes at one through three, the best of these being the second, a long-ish par-4 with a towering tree (40 yards prior to the green) hindering the line of play from the hole’s right side. Then the island green: a fair target, but unforgiving all around, and demanding nothing less than a solid iron shot to find land.

The remaining holes are par 4s and 5s, all winding through trees, all requiring careful, target golf on tee shots to landing zones where a miss generally means you’ll be punching out from under tree branches. After the first five holes, the greens become more tilted, sloping from back to front. The seventh and eighth greens feature complex contours that will challenge accomplished putters. The eighth fairway is the toughest target on the entire course, as it’s narrow and tree-lined; it also doglegs left, meaning any drive hit to the left and too short makes a direct line to the green impossible on your approach.

Aside from slow play on a Saturday morning, conditioning here was only within the average range for public courses. The greens had not been cut recently (very slow); too many leaves occupied the margins of some of the fairways; some of the tees were poorly-kept. On the plus side, the fairways were in good shape and the greens plush and consistent. Also, it’s a positive sign that course management has decided to cut down some of the big trees around several of these tees, which will facilitate more sunlight falling on them and better re-growth after damage.

All in all, though, I enjoyed my Saturday morning round for the perfect weather, but especially with my three lively playing partners whom I met for the first time here, which happens to be one of the great advantages of playing this game.

Nice layout and it is an interesting 9 hole course. The par 3 island green is challenging but fair. The lack of rain is definitely noticeable and the tee boxes certainly could use improvement. The greens were decent but a little slow. Overall a good experience.

Nice little course

I fell in love with this course as it is a small 9 hole course that is enjoyable to play, never packed, and a hidden gem. 4th hole is a beautiful Par3 water hole that is challenging.

Also a course that is easy to walk for anyone. Holes 7-8 are the only real hilly portions.

Ok to try something new

This place was on our way to a family party. We wanted to walk and squeeze in 9 before we went, so we gave it a shot. We weren’t drinking but you should know it’s a dry course. No alcohol is sold. It’s started no consumption too… when you pull up to the course you will immediately notice the un landscaped grounds. Tee boxes are mostly dirt. The fairways have random tufts of weeds and tall grass, and the rough is thick. For $16 we had fun. But not a place to go out of your way for. I might suggest they at lest hire a teenage kid to mow and keep up the entrance area… we were laughing as we pulled in. Kinda sets the tone.

Good Day

Pace of play perfect. Greens great shape. Trees could be trimmed off tee box on 2,5,6 especially when hitting from blues. Overall good experience.

Worth a try

Not the best start to the day. Maybe the staff was overwhelmed, but there was no one to be found in the clubhouse for 10 minutes upon check-in. Course is in rough shape but the layout is challenging, greens decent but slow. No water provided on the entire course, so come prepared.

Course is in relatively good shape.
Constructive criticisms:
1. Rope off sections of the tee boxes that need repair and let the seed grow without foot traffic.
2. Trim/remove overgrow trees that didn't originally hinder well placed shots.
3. Remove the original tee box signs that are completely rotted out and unsightly. Maybe somebody (someday?) will donate new yardage tee signs.

Course is great for a quick 9

This course is only 9 holes but is challenging enough to have a fun 9 holes, normally plays quick, and challenging enough for me. I also like walking it on occasion, but a cart keeps it moving.

Solid course

This course has a very good layout, great for a quick 9 and amazing for the price. It’s great to work on ball striking however the greens are insanely slow. Certain parts of the course get extremely wet as well. Overall I’d recommend this course.

JW

April weather was as expected, cool and windy.
First three holes, fairways were VERY soggy. Greens were treated late season last year and in very good condition for the spring. Still need to trim VERY overgrown trees that obstruct approach shot to greens after a good tee shot in the fairway (holes 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9).
