Vaaler Creek Golf Club
About
Conveniently located near downtown San Antonio not too far from Austin, Vaaler Creek Golf Club has a memorable layout of gently rolling hills dotted with creeks, ponds and lakes. The course begins with a challenging front nine and then eases up a bit on the back nine, but overall it is a formidable test. The greens are tricky and demanding, especially on the front nine where there are some severe slopes and undulations. The back nine greens are a bit flatter but they still require careful attention. The rolling, contoured fairways are lined with trees and there are deep bunkers strategically guarding the greens, but luckily there are only seventeen of them. Water hazards come into play throughout and there are also several doglegs and blind shots if there wasn’t enough to keep you on your toes.

The good and the bad
Good course layout and condition was very good. Cart GPS was not working. Pin placement was too challenging for the average golfer, given that the size of the greens is very large and there is significant slope - almost guarantees 2-3 putts. Shots off the fairway are difficult to find given the terrain. Cart person is wonderful. Very slow pace of play. Course is challenging, but a good one.
The course is in good condition. The T shot is difficult to determine the correct line for a person not failure with the course. The greens are difficult, not fast, but large multi breaks.
High-quality experience
Everything about the round was great, with one exception ... the flags seemed to have been placed in the most difficult position on each green, as if they just held or were getting ready to have a tournament - they were not appropriate for the average golfer, rather, they were for low-handicap golfers. Oh well, it was a great day on a great course.
Challenging course
For the ladies there are several holes that are very challenging on this course but a fun one to play, bring lots of balls.
Brilliant course
Huge fan of this well groomed, stunningly beautiful and challenging course. 100% recommend to all.
Only drawback was the group of 8 in front who slowed down the pace of play.
Beautiful course
Had a fantastic time on this course, finished in 3.5 hours on Easter Sunday. Starter was very friendly, course layout is tough, fairway and greens are in excellent shape. Worth the drive from Austin!
Great condition
First time playing. Fairways and greens were in excellent condition. Staff were helpful and accommodating to our needs. We even enjoyed the wildlife around the course.
Interesting Course
First, I liked the overall layout of the course, although I did learn a few costly lessons to study the GPS in the cart before hitting (through the fairway a few times). The course wasn’t in the best condition, but they get a pass on that due to the snowstorm a couple weeks ago. I don’t know how the condition of the course would be on a normal day, but I feel they take care of it.
A couple of things I didn’t like included the massive elevation changes on the greens. If the greens were in decent condition and somewhat fast you could be in for a world of hurt. To exemplify this on the 9th green I had 3 putts in a row end up further behind me than when I started, because I didn’t make it up the hill. I also didn’t love that you couldn’t easily tell which tee you were at as the paint was mostly off all the tee markers. On a few tees we had challenges getting the tee in the ground, which is a worrisome sign for when it actually gets hot and dry.
Beyond that it is a fun course, perhaps a touch over priced, but not too badly. Just be careful on the greens, 5 putts aren’t fun.
Fun course to play
Enjoy playing g this course, the 18th hole is a tough one.
Good condition
My brother and I play Vaaler today and other than being very windy it was a great day. The course as always was in great condition.
