About
Conveniently located near downtown San Antonio not too far from Austin, Vaaler Creek Golf Club has a memorable layout of gently rolling hills dotted with creeks, ponds and lakes. The course begins with a challenging front nine and then eases up a bit on the back nine, but overall it is a formidable test. The greens are tricky and demanding, especially on the front nine where there are some severe slopes and undulations. The back nine greens are a bit flatter but they still require careful attention. The rolling, contoured fairways are lined with trees and there are deep bunkers strategically guarding the greens, but luckily there are only seventeen of them. Water hazards come into play throughout and there are also several doglegs and blind shots if there wasn’t enough to keep you on your toes.

Interesting Course
First, I liked the overall layout of the course, although I did learn a few costly lessons to study the GPS in the cart before hitting (through the fairway a few times). The course wasn’t in the best condition, but they get a pass on that due to the snowstorm a couple weeks ago. I don’t know how the condition of the course would be on a normal day, but I feel they take care of it.
A couple of things I didn’t like included the massive elevation changes on the greens. If the greens were in decent condition and somewhat fast you could be in for a world of hurt. To exemplify this on the 9th green I had 3 putts in a row end up further behind me than when I started, because I didn’t make it up the hill. I also didn’t love that you couldn’t easily tell which tee you were at as the paint was mostly off all the tee markers. On a few tees we had challenges getting the tee in the ground, which is a worrisome sign for when it actually gets hot and dry.
Beyond that it is a fun course, perhaps a touch over priced, but not too badly. Just be careful on the greens, 5 putts aren’t fun.

Enjoy playing g this course, the 18th hole is a tough one.

My brother and I play Vaaler today and other than being very windy it was a great day. The course as always was in great condition.

Always a fun and challenging course ro play with friendly people. Not for the novice golfer.
A Great Course Played on a Beautiful Day
We played 27 holes on a near perfect Texas February morning through afternoon. I am an older, learning the game, golfer while my friends are younger and more experienced players. We all had a great time. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The greens are in great shape. The green on number 7 (I think) is daunting. Pin placement was extreme at the top left and anything short of reaching the plateau at the top 20% of the green rolls back off the green. One of my friends putted up the face of the green and unfortunately did not reach the plateau. His ball rolled back down and completely off the putting surface.

Great conditions on course for January. Greens in good shape. Fairways green. Layout can be challenging. Staff was very friendly and helpful
Great course
Fun course, with some challenges. Love it! The staff was awesome from the pro shop, the drink cart ladies, and an excellent marshal who made his rounds to assure everyone was enjoying their round. I'll be back and bring friends!
good challenging course
Really enjoyed playing here. The greens are in great shape and the course is good challenge. The only minor downside is the sheer amount of deer poop on the course. I know there isn't much the course can do about that but it was a distraction.
Enjoyed it
Cold morning to strart, and the 4-some in front of us played at a slow pace, but the weather warmed up and the the round was overall enjoyable.
