Reviews
Lion Roars
Very nice facility and the staff was very friendly and helpful.n
Unexpected beautiful scenery!
Course is very nice. Greens almost perfect. Bring extra balls if your tee shots are a little off! Nice fully stocked clubhouse and the $2 beers the cart girl was selling was, cheapest I've seen.
Fun course
It's in very good shape. A few greens need some attention. Not bad at all. Very challenging course. Lots of hills. Very fun.
What a pleasant surprise
I found this course on a website and decided to take the drive just to enjoy a round and wind down from my trip. This place is great. Challenging, scenic, accommodating , just plain great. I will be back in 2 days.
Being a retired professional athlete I understand the value of accommodations and these guys are good. Thanks for your hospitality and I look forward to the celebrity outing in October.
Overall worthwhile
I understand the course is under new management. I could see efforts to upgrade. If the work continues, it will be a wonderful destination. It is very 'hilly' , so be prepared for challenging lies. There are several tee choices for all skill levels.
It is not worth the weekend rates, but weekday rates are fair.
I have heard the restaurant is very good but is only open for dinner. I found this frustrating as I often like to eat at the course before play.
I recommend this course
First time playing but I really enjoyed it. Quiet and secluded. 16 & 17 were my favorite holes, a par 3 and 4 respectively. I am not very good so lost some balls off the tee but if you can drive somewhat straight you will enjoy this course. Several Holes have extreme elevation changes but I enjoyed it.
Hidden Gem on the West side
Where do I start this course is stunning. I have loved the Lion for years and it is well worth the drive from Atlanta 35 Min down I-20. The Staff is great and Mr. Lively has done a great job running the operations to get the course in the shape it should be in. It is the best it has been in years. Greens are quick, true, and very big. The course plays much longer than the score card. I think Silver is all you want at 6700 yards because it easily plays over 7100. The tips are easily playing 7400. Bring your A game because you will hit every shot and love the scenery. Check it out soon as the colors in the Spring, and Fall are amazing. It is the closest thing to a mountain style course within hours of Atlanta.
Great Course
Me and my father played on thursday afternoon and loved it. This was the first time my father had swung a club in 10 years so we were playing a little slow but everyone was courteous about playing through and I shot my first eagle on hole 11! I was a little worried my father would get frustrated and want to quit but it was a sunny day, everyone was nice and the course was in great shape. I plan to go back next week.
FUN!
Course is so much fun. A few greens need some serious love!
This course in not ready for play yet.
There was not grass on the tee boxes, the greens had just been punched and sanded, the bunkers were wet and hard and the fairways were still dormant. It will be a better place to play when the staff gets the course ready. The course should be ready to play in about 1 month.
There is a new restaurant in the clubhouse, but it was not open the day I played. They have a outdoor grilling area which should be nice when they open it up.
Hidden Gem
Do yourself a favor and go play the Lion. Lots of challenge here for all players. Pick teh right tee boxes, and enjoy this beautiful course.
One note:
The tee box markers are not the most clear. Might not be a bad idea to ask about them before you play.
The blacks (tips) are a white outline marker, and from a distance look a lot like the next two in....
Wonderful golf outing at the Lion
This was our first trip to the Lion. Although the weather had been bad the weeks leading up to our round the course was in decent shape. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The course was challenging and the greens were fast. The Lion is nicely laid out amongst the hillside. A few holes featured picturesque views with the tee box positioned high above the green.
Overall great experience.
Played in early December. Course is hilly with a few blind shots. I guess if you know the course that is fine, however, we did not. I would like to go back again now that I have seen the course. Staff was friendly. The club pro, Matthew Kemp is an outstanding pro. I think you should give it a try.
A good course to play
It has been a number of years since I played Lion Golf Club due to the drive out to Breman. I had forgotten how nice and enjoyable this course is. A few of the (bent) greens still had spotty damage from this summer but the damage was not severe. The pace of play was good for a Saturday morning. My only "negative" would be that several of the holes (like 18) could use markers that indicate yardage to the hazards....this could speed up play further.
Reopened Lion is already in great condition!
After change in ownership, reopened Lion is already in great condition; Clubhouse/Bar renovations are nearly complete and look great!. Always has been a fine, dramatic layout and tremendous value with GN discounts. Easy to get to off of I-20, which makes distance from Atlanta less of issue. Distance gaps between tee boxes have had my group picking the more playable tees (for us) for a hybrid course, but very enjoyable, scenic round.
Try This Course, You'll Love It
The course is well maintained and the greens in spite of having been recently sanded are in very good condition. There are five sets of tees making the course playable for all levels. The only complaint I had was that on some of the holes the Back, Mid and Forward tees were located on different land elevations and were basically the same color making it difficult to locate the proper tee box. Other than that, the course is beautiful and the layout and elevation changes is like playing mountain golf.
Nice views
The course is in great shape and the views are very pleasing. I would put this on my list of nice golf courses to play. I look forward to returning
You gotta do it!
I have played here 10- 15 times in last few years. Always a great trip. If you like to be out in the woods and enjoy not seeing rows of houses on each side of you then this is the place. Every hole has great scenery very nice in the fall. Since it reopened the new managers have been working hard to get it back to pristine condition.
Unless you are an Olympic athlete you absolutely do not want to attempt walking this one. even the carts struggle sometimes.
Overall its one of the best around west Ga area.If you are familer with courses in the area I would say its a cross between the Frog and Oak Mt..
Never had a bad experience here. Oh and on the 18th hole NO you aren't likely to make it on in 2 just FYI.
Fun, Challenging Layout
I've played at The Lion the last two weeks, both times on a Tuesday. Courses conditions are very good, pace of play is fast, and with all the different tees, golfers can bite off as much as they want to chew. The greens are good, especially considering all the wear and tear of summer. Where needed, fans are being installed to maintain them. There is only one house on the course, so golfers looking to get away from the subdivision look (and the hustle and bustle of Atlanta), will enjoy The Lion. It will be beautiful this fall.
