Torn
Visited SPCC for 1st time and came away impressed and disappointed. I missed my tee time due to traffic delays, but the Pro was still able to accommodate me and couldn't have been nicer. Outside staff was very nice and very helpful. The price was VERY affordable.
I loved the old school Scottish/English out and in 9's, which you don't see in this day and age of course design. I found the conditions to be below par. Many of the greens had medium to large problem areas, so pin positions were pretty much middle of the road. The rest of the course had some rough spots between the fairways/rough which made for some interesting lies. The bunkers were in great shape with just the right amount of dark sand. All in all the conditions were pretty rough.
I would love to see what SPCC looked like at past peak conditions. Given the staff/price and layout I would recommend as the conditions can only improve.
Thanks
Beautiful Course
Played with 4x on Sunday, April 3rd. With the exception of two greens the course was in excellent condition!! If you have the opportunity to play here, do it. You won't be disappointed.
Convenient Golf
I chose SPCC because it was close to where we were renting in St Petersburg Beach. The price on golfnow.com was reasonable for the quality of the course. In its heyday this course and surrounding area must have the been the jewel of St Pete. It is now outdated compared to other courses in the area. The fairways were good, the first few greens were beat up but improved on the remaining holes.
The bunkers needed some more sand. They used a dark sand that was pretty good on most of my errant shots in the bunkers.
I would not pay the regular price
I would come back for golfnow.com afternoon rate.
The lady at the desk was very nice and I played with three members who were very helpful.
tired courses
With these so called Canadian snowbirds playing golf for 3 months all the course we played were bare and tired and full, a bit disappointing to be truthful , Orlando was a much better deal
great course to play
The course is great along with the practise facility completed in under 4 hours
great day on the golf course
good weather though it got cold the last two holes.
great people to play with, close to my home, easy to get to good staff . always enjoy playing this course tks
A good day
Good old course, typical FL layout, respectable greens, decent condition- play it.
Needs Re-investment
Perhaps my expectations were too high from the start; I read that this Hebert Strong course continues to host the prestigious ‘New Year’s Invitational, the longest running amateur tournament in the Southeast, as well as PGA Tour events in the past. The course is relying heavily on its natural talent—the track makes one large counter-clockwise loop through a residential neighborhood, successfully incorporating pockets of water, long-standing standing trees, and small greens as formidable challenges. That said, the course now appears to be struggling from significant underinvestment. From the pro shop, to the first tee, and for the next 18 holes you’ll wince at what’s become of the historic track. If not just dated, the slow greens and shallow dirt bunkers , in particular, scream ‘muni’ as opposed to Country Club.
five star service, two star golf
The staff could not have been nicer and more helpful. From the guy that took our clubs from the car, the pro shop staff and the half way house, was all first rate. Golf was another story. The range was irons only off of matts where the hitting area was two inches above your feet. The golf course seemed shaggy. The fairways were overly wet without any rain in the past week. Every shot was a mud ball. The greens putted like they hadn't been cut in several days. The rough was very spotty. Bunkers had nice sand, but all the edges seemed ragged. No beverage cart on a 87 degree day. Stock up before you go out and at the turn. No drinking water on the course. The course hosts a big tournament next week, and we were hoping the course would be in better shape. This would have been OK for a $25 course, but not the price we paid.
Championship Qualiy, But Not Champioship Cost
I have played St. Pete Country Club on and off for the past eight years. They have the course in great shape: Greens roll true, fair pin selections and the traps have a good base of sands.
I like St. Pete CC as it is championship quality, but not championship cost. The course has fair landing areas for your drive, but you need to be accurate on your approach shot as the greens are guarded by bunkers.
Great value for the money. I will be back.
Course in Great Shape Again
Played recently and the course has completely recovered from the heavy summer rains. Fairways and greens were in very good condition. Overall the facility was well worth the money. Strongly recommend this course.
Repairs being made to several greens
Have enjoyed playing this course numerous times in the past. Played here Friday 10/23 for the first time in several months and was surprised to see that a number of the greens were undergoing significant repair---sod patches in multiple locations on the greens. To be fair, most of the greens are in good shape--I would rate 6 of the greens poor to fair, the rest good or excellent. But given the great condition of the course in the past, this is concerning to see. Would still recommend that you give the course a try as it is fun to play.
Good course
Excellennt course had a great day. Will play this course again.
Good old style course
Greens were very rough due to all the rain.the course discounted rate for us .overall very nice day for us.
Greens were destroyed by rains
The greens were destroyed by bad weather They were gracious to give me a free round at a later date Definitely call them and ask for greens conditions before you go
greens
after the airefication the greens died. they were brown but rolling before but 3 weeks later the greens looked like they had cancer.......... sad i love the course and will play it again .. please fix them... sad ..... when i called and asked how had they grown back...... they said okay??????????????? please sad to say they loct them and i don't know if they can be fixed for a while........ sad........
great course but lost the greens
one of my favorite courses for the area. must book 2 or more players so need another player. played it all summer . free range and chiping and putting green...... the greens were brown but rolling good 3 weeks ago///// then they aireated them. we came back due to the course drains and no cart path rules..... i called and they said greens almost back...... sad and misleading.....the greens are the worst that i have seen ever. love the course but 70 % of the greens are half sand and dead in areas....... love the course but for 35 $ it is again sad........ hope they figure how to repair them............ bogey golfer.........
Such a Shame
I've been wanting to play this course for a long time. I was able to get a tee time at a very reasonable rate for what the course typically costs. I was so excited to play. Boy was I disappointed. For a private course I was expecting a course in really good shape. It was anything but. The fairways were brown, the greens were brown and the bunkers were not sand, but dirt. Such a shame. I expected better
