Course Highlights
Purgatory Golf Club's highly rated layout features generous fairways, abundant bunkers, and undulating greens that grow increasingly challenging through the back nine. The clubhouse has a distinctive hunters lodge atmosphere, and consistently friendly staff make every visit welcoming.

About

Holes 18
Type Public
Par 72
Length 7754 yards
Slope 142
Rating 78.1

Spread across 218 acres, the Ron Kern-designed Purgatory Golf Club is the longest par-72 course east of the Mississippi River. Nevertheless, the course is set up to be enjoyed by all, with six different sets of tees ranging from more than 7,700 yards all the way down to just under 4,600 yards. Bunkering is one of the club's defining features, with more than 130 coming into play. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the par-3 17th, where eight massive bunkers almost completely surround the putting surface.

Purgatory In Name Only

I often play this course. If you really want to challenge yourself you can make it long from the tips. Lots of tee boxes to fit any level golfer. Many of the fairways strategically place bunks more to help guide your aiming on this links style course. Lots of great holes with enough risk vs reward shots to keep you interested throughout.

Glad you enjoyed the layout. Unfortunately the range does not dry out as fast as the course, just too much rain over the past few days.

I wish it were closer

Kudos to the club and staff!

I have played here several times over the years and it never disappoints. I have played here multiple times this spring and it appears to be in the best condition of the upper echelon courses in town.

The staff is glad you came and knowledgeable. The course requires all the shots and provides great shot value. The practice facilities are top notch. The greens are probably the best in town right now......ROLLING FAST AND TRUE.

Right now it is playing a little easier than when the prairie grass is up, which I can appreciate - There is enough resistance to scoring from the traps, water, wind, green speeds, etc. If I were to be critical, the one thing that could be vastly improved is the bunkering....... It is not consistent - extremely thin in places and thick in others. I try to avoid them anyway. :-) One of if not my favorites around town.

Best public play options around Indy:

1. Purgatory

2. Brickyard Crossing ( pricey )

3. The Fort

4. Prairie View ( WHEN it is in good shape )

5. Golf Club of IN ( underrated )

6. Fox Prairie ( underrated )

7. Bearslide

Great courses a good drive from town:

Kampen course at Purdue

Rock Hollow

Otter Creek

Harrison Hills

Mystic Hills

Challenging, yet fun layout

This was my second time playing this course. The first time I didn't enjoy myself, as it was very difficult to find my ball many times, and I didn't know my way around. This round, being earlier in the year, the rough was shorter, and more enjoyable. I also played with someone that knew the course. The gps units on the carts weren't working. The course conditions were excellent and challenging.

Several greens were Aerated and some of the traps seemed to be lacking sand, but overall the course was in pretty could shape for this time of year.

Classic golf architecture!

Gorgeous links-style layout with a number of traditionally-designed holes. There are six sets of tees that made it playable for all the players in our group. We loved spending time in the clubhouse, such a warm and relaxing environment! Food and drinks were great!

Very nice challenging course!

This was our first time playing this course. Loves the course and how challenging it was. On a nice day I bet it amazing however it was on in the mid 50s and horrible wind so we gave up a few hole into the back nine. Only downfall was a junior outting played earlier in the day and there were tons of divots on the greens that weren't repaired but greens were still nice despite that. Fairway and tee boxes are some of the best around. Would highly recommend this course and we will definitely be playing again in better weather!

Very nice layout

This course really is nice on the eyes. Great views from the tee box. It is a fair test for all levels. It offers many options on every tee to play the holes which allows you to think your way through each shot but still allows for a enjoyable and fun round of golf.

Loved Everything About It

If you're ever in Indy, you owe it to yourself to check out Purgatory. From No. 17 being surrounded by acres of sand to the cool Redan-style par-3 third, it's a treat for players who appreciate great architecture. Ron Kern did a masterful job, and current management has got conditions as good as they've ever been.

One of the best options in the Hoosier State

My home state has very few public layouts that are memorable, but Purgatory is one that will resonate for a long time. It's a strategic layout that is challenging throughout. Really enjoyed my round here.

COURSE CONDITIONS ARE SLIPPING

This used to be a pristine course, but it has slipped some. The structures are showing their age, and need better maintenance. Greens are still good, but cart paths are crumbling somewhat, muddy tracks around them, etc. Kind of sad, really.

well named

If you stray from the straight and narrow, Purgatory has numerous pitfalls to trap you. The course rewards good shots and penalizes poor ones, which is the mark of a well designed course. Management has available a mixed tee arrangement which provides an intermediate yardage between the 6400 of the white tees and the 5600 of the green tees. This is a good and enjoyable test of one's golfing skills.

Purgatory is on the way to golf heaven

I kept trying to think of a reason not give Purgatory five stars. Let’s see: No two holes are alike, the par 3s are particularly strong, there are six sets of tees (including some very friendly women, senior and junior tees), it’s truly playable by all levels, and it’s a gorgeous golf course. What’s not to like about the family-run and owned Purgatory? It was even blessed by a priest, which is saying something considering its title. Plus it’s in great condition. The linksy look also scored points with me. The fescue, which really isn’t that daunting, gives the course that windswept look. And while the greens can certainly be challenging, lesser players – or those with a little creativity – still have opportunities to run the ball onto the green. Combine that with a beautiful clubhouse, terrific food & beverage and reasonable green fees, and you have outstanding value – and a five-star experience.

Great course , slow play

Have played this course many times. Usually I monitor how full the parking lot is before teeing off. If it seems pretty crowded, it's not worth playing as it will inevitably lead to a 5+ hour round. Can't recall the last time I saw a Ranger going around to speed up play. If it's not very crowded, it's a really fun and enjoyable course.

Used to be a great course

Started off by hitting balls at the range. There was no grass, just sand & dirt to hit from. There wasn't a starter on the first tee, so groups were randomly starting whenever. Our first 9 holes took us 4 hours to play because the course was so backed up. No ranger to speed things up. On the back 9 none of the water jugs were filled and there wasn't a refreshment cart. It was 88 that day and we were extremely parched. Oh, and by the way, I didn't even get to finish the back 9 because I had to be somewhere at 6:30, so I ended early because it was so congested (we tee'd off at 11:50). I've played many courses in these conditions before, but not for $65. What a joke. If you're going to charge that kind of money, act like an elite course.
