Purgatory Golf Club
About
Spread across 218 acres, the Ron Kern-designed Purgatory Golf Club is the longest par-72 course east of the Mississippi River. Nevertheless, the course is set up to be enjoyed by all, with six different sets of tees ranging from more than 7,700 yards all the way down to just under 4,600 yards. Bunkering is one of the club's defining features, with more than 130 coming into play. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the par-3 17th, where eight massive bunkers almost completely surround the putting surface.

Par 3, 17th Hole Photo submitted by TravisCedzidlo19 on 10/09/2014
Ultimate challenge!
Having played many great golf courses across the U.S., Purgatory is one of the most challenging. It's very long and requires accurate tee shots. The heavy bunkering and deep fescue grass will severely punish errant shots. The greens are true and fast as well. A great golf experience! Recommended primarily for mid to low-handicap players.
You just gotta play it!
The clubhouse is magnificent, and the course is a one-of-a-kind. The greens are a little smaller than normal on several holes, but they run true and fast. The course is in pristine condition, and the new touch screen GPS is awesome. Better bring extra balls, even if you're a straight hitter because some of the fairways are a little tight with plenty of fescue even around the bunkers making it difficult to find your ball. Everything at this club is first class.
Great Mid Season Condition
Purgatory was in great mid season condition this July when we visited. Fairways were plush and green, even though we've had little rain this summer. Will be back later this summer.
Very long course that plays fair due to firm and fast conditions.
Greens were a little slower than I would typically like to see, but the course was in great condition overall.
Always an enjoyable test.
Nice course, very challenging from the back tees
Course was in nice shape, new this year was a very nice GPS systems
Course and staff were great!
The Purgatory Course is one of the best I have ever played. I was told it was super difficult, and might not get a score worth writing down. This is totally false. The majority of fairways are wide enough for me (a bogey player) to score well. You just need to manage the course. Don't try the "miracle shot". You will score badly if you do. But if you play the course correctly, most traps and high grass are out of play.
Even the traps were pristene, after all the bad rain a week ago. Most courses traps are hard as rocks. Purgatory's were light sand. Yes, I did hit two of them :-)
I wouild play Purgatory daily, if my pocket book could handle it.
Make sure you play it. You will not be sorry you did.
One note, they do need to have a better sign outside the course enrty, I passed it once without knowing.

Very challenging with multiple tees
Gps worked great for first 4 holes. Then it was terrible.
It would give yardage at a 90 degree angles.
Fairways not marked very well either.made for a very frustrating rd.
Greens were fast and a little rough in need of better care.
I had played it about 2 yrs ago and it has gone downhill since.
i would not pay the premium rates they charge
There is far better values and options in central indiana.
Golf now price is only reason i played course.
If i saved about 70% on fees i might play again.
Good Course, but Disappointing
The design of this course is very good. Interesting holes, nice risk/reward options on almost every hole. It has a nice flowing, rolling, hilly feel to it like an old style links course, but with a bit more sculpted charm peppered throughout.
However, for the name and rank this course carry’s in Indiana I was disappointed. The course conditions were anything but perfect, and a fair shade shy of “well maintained.” Almost every fairway needs attention, bunkers sanding and the greens were ball marked and need some conditioning. I got a very good rate using Golf Now and a coupon I had for my birthday, making it less than $30 to play. I don't think I would pay more than $30 to play this, maybe not even $25 in the shape it is in right now.
Needs attention badly.
The design of this course if great. Holes have names. The course conditions have really gone downhill which is a shame. Fairways need attention, bunkers need touching up and the greens are getting worse every year. Sad to see this great course in this condition. They are still asking top dollar for a poor conditioned course.
Lives up to name
The weather was a little damp and gloomy but the course it's self was still extremely fun and difficult. I understand now why the course is named Purgatory. The amount of bunkers per hole was a bit hard to say the least. I spent more time in the sand than a day at the beach. The greens were extremely fast considering the damp conditions else where on the course. I thought it was an excellent course and would recommend it to anyone looking for a challenge.
Uniquely beautiful and challenging
Unfortunately I played Purgatory after the fescue had been mowed and greens and tee boxes were being aerated, so my experience and review reflect those conditions. Also, I like challenging courses. The layout is dramatic with holes wandering among large mounded elevations and heavy bunkers. One gets a feeling of traveling through ravines as the tee boxes and and fairways are often hidden from view from cartpaths by mounds and fescue grasses. Players who do not like blind shots will be troubled by this course, but I like the emerging views that reveal beautiful vistas. I am a fan of this course!
Bunkers anyone?
Purgatory was in great shape despite the lack of summer rains. The pace-of-play was a bit slow, but that was due to local high school teams going out for practice. Fantastic track, with a beautiful clubhouse.
Expensive for what you got
Our impressions were: (i) greens fee was high for this level of course, (ii) the course itself was just 'ok' but (iii) the restroom on the course were awful (playing with my bride who really was taken back by their condition) Don't plan to return
