Championship Course Views for Intermediate Players
Being the golf fanatic I am I played on a day with an extreme heat warning and specifically took a blind chance on thi course because I am very familiar with the cooling breezes off the escarpment. I had previously played one of the other municipal courses in Hamilton called King's Forerst and found it a good value and had on my checklist to try the Chedoke Beddoe course. I found it a better value for me. The course was designed by one of the great course designers of the 30th century. I found the layout to be excellent for all 18 holes. The style is Parkland and using the advantage of elevation changes along the escarpment providing natural challenges of stepping up or down a club to compensate for hitting down or uphill. The other two advantages of this particular escarpment setting is a few spectacular elevated Panaramic views and the cooling gentle breezes which seem to waft off the escarpment which help to refresh especially on a hot day. The layout is well suited to the Intermediate player looking for a confidence boost as it has fairly wide fairways and no fairway bunkers or at least none that I can recall. While the greens do have multiple bunkers surrounding them at least 60% or more of the circumference of the greens were trap free and most greens were flat with surrounding banks, hills and knolls designed to favourably deflect missed greens toward the green. I don't recall a single turtle backed green. Some courses you play you can have a decent shot land on the green only to see it roll off into a trap or run off water drainage area. This course provides the opposite experience on most holes where slightly missed shots can kick onto the green. To me the most important feature of a course in good condition is the state of the greens being well cut, green and healthy with minimal ball marks and a green with no debree or stones etc. With an apron that is also in excellent condition. The day I played in mid season (July) the greens were amazing for a course of this price range. The putting surfaces were true with no bumps on stones or debree and very accurate to the visible curvatures. The only obstruction I had was when my ball hit an insect once. To get a better green you would have to go to a top tier course like Glenn Abbey or Copper Creek etc. So kudos to the greens keepers here! The fairways were well maintained with few divots but not nearly in the same quality or condition of the greens. They wee decent enough. The fairways and areas around the greens would be far better if the course had better established cart paths. The is a real lack of cart paths their perhaps to avoid throwing down to much gravel or cement on the escarpment but it opens the way up to people driving wherever they want which contributed to a lot of grassy hill/knoll damage and cart path wear close to the greens. The rough was ugly, dried out and looked really sad in stark contrast to the near picture perfect greens but the rough was kept at a good height so it was remarkably playable and freindly. In fact if your drive was just off the fairway you could still achieve amazing forward roll in the rough just because it was so dry and not overly dense or long. The length of the holes were challenging but made it possible often to pitch into the green with a good drive. A few dog legs forced a longer second shot to green. The par fives for the most part could be reached in 2 shots with good shots. One of the par fives made it impossible to reach in 2 due the a dogleg and tall trees. Overall a good mix of risk and reward for the intermediate player. The par three's were a good blend for me the shortest being a pitching wedge shot and the longest being a 3 iron/hybrid/rescue type club all being reachable without having to reach for a wood. The amenities were very good. Clean, large and cool washrooms throughout the course. Drink cart attendant came often but not too often about every 4 holes. I opted to eat at a restaurant in Hamilton so I can't comment on the good except to say there were more than one option: An indoor casual ding room and an outdoor snack bar. There were also facilities which can be rented out for parties, gatherings and celebrations. Lastly, I want to comment on the course staff: I had read some Google reviews that were critical of staff that were either uninterested in helping you or even rude; I found the opposite experience in the opposite; everyone and I must have been addressed by no less than a dozen during my game from the greens keepers to maintence people, pro shop staff and the starter. Some places you go to people will make eye contact but say nothing to you perhaps simply because they feel you are there to play golf and not acknowledge some of the staff; rather here every single person once eye contact was made they greeted me and asked if I was looking for the tee or the pro shop or washroom they simply offered to assist Lorne helpfull to me. I have it experienced this high regard to being attentive to the golfing customer except at some reports or high end course. Clearly Simone has read the reviews and given clear and firm instructions to the staff because they are really on their game for freindliness here! Overall - great game. Course play was very fast finishing in just under 4 and a quarter hours probably due to the public heat health warnings. Value is exceptional purchased my game as a Golfnow "Hot Deal". Course could use some rain and some designated cart paths combing with signs directing carts away from green approach areas but either way I will definitely golf here more often.
Good City of Hamilton course
Nicer of the two city of Hamilton courses that are located here. Good value mid week. Been dying to play this course after driving by it on the highway and seeing "cardiac hill" multiple times. If you need more of a challenge, you need to play Kings Forest, that's were all the city golf course management money is spent.
Nice course
Good game of golf for the money.
Poor Condition
Terrible condition. Fairways are like concrete.
Normally better
Disappointed from the start when the clubhouse would not attempt to put a third person in our group. Claimed that the tee time couldn't be adjusted. When we arrived we were moved up 3 tee spots (So they moved it) and there was no groups behind us all day.
great course Friendly staff
Great course. Some challenging holes. very good conditions Greens were in great shape for the type of weather we had this spring. Would play it again. Very good price for the course
Worth the drive and the elevation changes
Great old style course. Played Beddoe which has some real ups and downs. Fairways were in good shape and the greens rolled true (even though punched some time ago). Very nice autumn views. Not very busy at all during the week.
Delightful afternoon playing up escarpment
They say it is GOFTOBER and playing in the autumn sunshine was lovely. Found a few holes delightfully challenging with the water. Enjoyed the hills and the walk. So much to be thankful for including this gem right in the City of Hamilton.
Good Day of Golf
Got this off a golf discount. Regular price Too high for this course..Played Bedoe . Fairways and greens in good shape and enjoyed play, would go back again if good discounts were available.
Great course on side of escarpment.
If you like an older course on the side of the Niagara escarpment this one is a beauty for the price. Lots of up and down with many opportunities for fun shots.
chedoke beddoe
When we arrived at the course we went to the club house to check in the young man asked if we had a tee time. I answered yes he asked if i booked on line i said yes he asked for the confirmation number i let him know it was on my phone i would show him, he gave a smart alleck remark by saying next time just take a picture of it it would be faster. We got our key to the golf cart and were told to see the starter out side to get a scorecard when we met the starter he was also not that friendly i asked for a scorecard he pointed to a little hut at the first tee box and said get one from there. It seemed the only friendly staff member was the lady that ran the snack shop .after all that we played the course is very well maintained the greens are large and run great ,the fairways were amazingly wide there are a few holes that you really need to be sure of the club selection but all in all i will be back to try the martin course the view from a few of the holes were breath taking.
Beddoe Aug 26th 2015
Always love playing this challenging par 70 on the beautiful escarpment. A little disappointed in the fairway conditions. Played it a month earlier and the course was pristine. This time the fairways had a lot of bare spots. Still recommend it though. For the price your hard pressed to find something this challenging and historical.
Hilly challenge
Lots of blind tee shots, uneven lies even in middle of fairways. Pace is slow. Greens and bunkers are well maintained. You have to have played course to know what to do on each hole. Elevation changes make holes deceivingly long.
Disappointed
The course and round would have been fine except for the fact that it was over-booked by a mile! I mean it was jammed. Only one starter to administer to both of Chedokes courses, though I saw several other staff walking around. It was so bad that after one hole I went to find the starter who was then stationed at the Martin course and asked if I could join some friends that were already underway on that course. The rate of play on that course was fine. But I had payed for the more expensive and supposedly better Beddoe course. This is my second attempt to play the Beddoe, and the same thing happened the first time. My partner and I ruffed it out on that occasion but it was brutal. I wasn't about to try that yesterday in (feels like) 40 degree Celsius conditions. Chedokes needs to monitor their capacity for the Beddoe and if they can't accommodate Golf Now participants, they need to,stand down. Also, have a starter on that course AT ALL TIMES because it was bedlam without one. As I said, the Martin course that we played (by default) ) was fine in all other ways.
What happened to the greens?
The greens are just terrible. I played here in May and the course was in decent shape. The greens are pitted and patchy. Big brown patches all over them. Even the fairways are shaggy. I was very disappionted. Glad I paid under $30... I won't be back this year... Muni is no excuse. King's Forest is in way better shape....
Escarpment meets Stanley Thompson 100 years ago!
Great track. Municipal conditions. One of Canada's best architects who got to do his work on a unique plot of Canadian land; the escarpment. Old trees showcasing what he imagined it would be back then. Lots of elevation changes makes 6000 yards feel way longer.
Beddoe
Chedoke is always pretty good value. Pace was ok we got are round in just over 4 hrs but still seemed to be waiting on the back
convenient golf in Hamilton
Chedoke Beddoe course is one of the closest to downtown Hamilton most reasonably priced and value for your buck golf courses in the Hamilton area.
I would recommend it to anyone.
