Royal Niagara Golf Club - Old Canal Course
About
The Old Canal Course is one of three nine-hole courses at the Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club. Situated between the scenic Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail, the Old Canal Course is named after the historic 120-year-old Welland Canal that borders it. The challenging layout was designed to championship standards, employing several tricky elements including carefully sculpted fairways, rolling greens, and king-size bunkers. True to its name, the golf course features plenty of water throughout. There are several dramatically placed tees perched on the edges of the canal, providing stunning scenery that is unmatched in the Niagara region. All three courses at Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club were built to the same high standards, but each one offers a unique set of challenges.

Great features with elevated tees, greens and slope..
Very challenging course in great condition. Enjoyed it very much.
Well Kept!
Narrow fairways with lots of tall rough make it very important to control the tee shots. Greens are fast but not difficult. All staff are very friendly and helpful.
Great condition, definatly worth the drive from Toronto
Will definitely play this course again. Played all three 9's and I still cant decide what one was my favourite
Excellent
I really liked the course and the staffs level of professionalism. I just wish my skill was up to this courses challenging greens.
Great course
There's a lot of courses in the Niagara area...this course is absolutely in the upper echelon. Pristine conditions. I would not have played here if not for the great golfnow rate...no matter how great a course is, we don't pay $50+ for a round, period. So it was nice to experience a top notch course at a good value. From tee to fairway to green to everything else, this course was in top notch condition. If you are a bogey golfer, you will struggle to break 100 here, but the challenge was a nice change of pace.
Very Nice Track
This course is in fabulous shape. There has been a lot of rain lately so the greens are very slow and in need of cutting. The starter was friendly but there is a lot of confusion at the starter shack when they are starting three separate 9's, Our carts were sandwiched between other carts lined up in order of tee times which made it difficult to get into them for clubs etc..
Overall, worth a play.
This course is very trickey for first timer.
Lots of shots are blind as day we played it was cart path only. Distances to carry environmental areas need to be marked to make experience more enjoyable. Greens have different reads and undulations to them.
Good Value with Hot Deal
Hot Deal was very good value. We played after 4 and first 9 clipped along but second 9 was slowed up so we didn't finish (our choice) .This course has many longish carries for the high handicapper, but was in good condition and I enjoyed it (H'cap 23).Wished I remembered to bring my yardage book!
Lots of scenery, good looking course
The fairways were in wet condtion, but everything else was great, we were stuck behind foursomes for the front nine, so it was a very slow front 9. Other than that, a great course, will play there again in the future
Not good value
I found the conditions of the greens very poor ... they were slow and quite bumpy. The group in front were casual golfers and there was no marshal around to move them along. There are much better courses around Niagara for the money.
Good course overall. Very challenging for my game.
The course was in very condition including the greens. Some of the tee box Signs did NOT have yardage infromation on them on the Escarpment Course. Not sure why. Not a big deal as the scorecard had them but it was just weird. I do not believe that the snack shop was open the day I went and only saw the Beer Cart once in 4 hours.
Good Value
Overall a good course, tough greens in good condition. Felt like the marshall was following us for some reason, pace of play was normal so i'm not sure what that was all about. All in all it had a pretty good time would play it again.
Great veriety
My friends and I decided to play the course on a short notice and got a tee-time within 24 hours. our scours did not reflect the great condition and weather that day, however we had an excellent time and we will be back in the near future.
Good value for the money
Met by friendly staff. Was able to get started early. Pace of play was not bad considering this was a tough course with some blind shots. Should have purchased the course guide. Overall the course was in good shape for this time of year. Good value all around.
Very nice layout with a variety of shots using all your clubs
Every hole is different, par 3's are particularly strong. Fairways are very good; greens are on the fast side, tees and bunkers could use some attention. Generous landing areas off the tee. Wind can be a factor on every hole. Real good value.
Decent layout, borderline conditions
I have played this course around 12 times in the last 6 years, each year the conditions seem to get just a little worse (two of last 3 rounds I have driven a cart that is literally falling apart with a top speed of about 5mph). Tee boxes in particular are getting uglier by the year. It's still a decent value for money, but I would not consider it a great course.
The Escarpment and Iron Bridge nines are definitely the better nines, which have some very good holes.
Generally has a very slow pace of play due to very deep rough and lots of fescue. Playing partner (18 hndicp) lost about 8 or 9 balls (only 2 of which were in the water). That's lots of time spent looking for balls in the deep grass. Our 3some took 4 hours with no one ahead or behind, but I have walked off this course after a 2 hr and 45 min nine holes more than once in the past. Please keep the grass/fescue shorter.
The course was in good shape so early in the season.
The staff were very friendly and very accommodating.
WINDY!!
Still a little wet for early season. WINDY!!! Skill required!! Dead during the week flew through our round!
rough needs attention
The rough is just that, rough. However it is clumpy and if it was mowed it would still rough but at least you could find your ball. I lost three in the rough which unless you step on your ball you may not find it.
The greens are aerated and far too slow.
The carts are being replace in the next couple of months I was told after had to replace mine between nines as I couldnt keep up to my playing partners.
Overall I love the course and it is spring. ONce a few weeks have gone by it will be great to play as usual.
Nice dry course for spring play and good for cart golf
I was impressed with the staff here and the course Marshall's were good. Last year they were not so good so much improved!
