Royal Niagara Golf Club - Old Canal Course
About
The Old Canal Course is one of three nine-hole courses at the Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club. Situated between the scenic Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail, the Old Canal Course is named after the historic 120-year-old Welland Canal that borders it. The challenging layout was designed to championship standards, employing several tricky elements including carefully sculpted fairways, rolling greens, and king-size bunkers. True to its name, the golf course features plenty of water throughout. There are several dramatically placed tees perched on the edges of the canal, providing stunning scenery that is unmatched in the Niagara region. All three courses at Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club were built to the same high standards, but each one offers a unique set of challenges.

Good course overall. Very challenging for my game.
The course was in very condition including the greens. Some of the tee box Signs did NOT have yardage infromation on them on the Escarpment Course. Not sure why. Not a big deal as the scorecard had them but it was just weird. I do not believe that the snack shop was open the day I went and only saw the Beer Cart once in 4 hours.
Good Value
Overall a good course, tough greens in good condition. Felt like the marshall was following us for some reason, pace of play was normal so i'm not sure what that was all about. All in all it had a pretty good time would play it again.
Great veriety
My friends and I decided to play the course on a short notice and got a tee-time within 24 hours. our scours did not reflect the great condition and weather that day, however we had an excellent time and we will be back in the near future.
Good value for the money
Met by friendly staff. Was able to get started early. Pace of play was not bad considering this was a tough course with some blind shots. Should have purchased the course guide. Overall the course was in good shape for this time of year. Good value all around.
Very nice layout with a variety of shots using all your clubs
Every hole is different, par 3's are particularly strong. Fairways are very good; greens are on the fast side, tees and bunkers could use some attention. Generous landing areas off the tee. Wind can be a factor on every hole. Real good value.
Decent layout, borderline conditions
I have played this course around 12 times in the last 6 years, each year the conditions seem to get just a little worse (two of last 3 rounds I have driven a cart that is literally falling apart with a top speed of about 5mph). Tee boxes in particular are getting uglier by the year. It's still a decent value for money, but I would not consider it a great course.
The Escarpment and Iron Bridge nines are definitely the better nines, which have some very good holes.
Generally has a very slow pace of play due to very deep rough and lots of fescue. Playing partner (18 hndicp) lost about 8 or 9 balls (only 2 of which were in the water). That's lots of time spent looking for balls in the deep grass. Our 3some took 4 hours with no one ahead or behind, but I have walked off this course after a 2 hr and 45 min nine holes more than once in the past. Please keep the grass/fescue shorter.
The course was in good shape so early in the season.
The staff were very friendly and very accommodating.
WINDY!!
Still a little wet for early season. WINDY!!! Skill required!! Dead during the week flew through our round!
rough needs attention
The rough is just that, rough. However it is clumpy and if it was mowed it would still rough but at least you could find your ball. I lost three in the rough which unless you step on your ball you may not find it.
The greens are aerated and far too slow.
The carts are being replace in the next couple of months I was told after had to replace mine between nines as I couldnt keep up to my playing partners.
Overall I love the course and it is spring. ONce a few weeks have gone by it will be great to play as usual.
Nice dry course for spring play and good for cart golf
I was impressed with the staff here and the course Marshall's were good. Last year they were not so good so much improved!
course needs new cartswas in good shape
w as in good shape for this time of year greens were slow but ran true
The course was in great shape. Very few leaves as comparded to other courses this time of year.
The course was in great shape. Great fare ways. Greens were a little slow due to sand and aeration. Other wise it was great value for the money.
End of Season Game
On November 20th, for the first time play for us, this course was enjoyable.
good shape
for the time of year november course is in good shape, the greens where a little rough, but not bad considering very few golfers fix thier ball marks
Course well featured and good. Next time will paly again.
Course was not so easy. However it worth to play.
Green condition well maintained. But it/s not easy to check distance because there was not distance mark on the course.
Challenging but course directions could be better
Very nice couse, a little wet due to recent rain but still in very good condition
great layout and hole variety, i was dissapointed with the conditions of the greens and tee boxes.
everything was good for the price but i was surprised at how poor the greens and tee boxes were.
Challenging course.
Great course but greens and tee blocks need attention
Spend Your Hard-earned money somewhere else
Wow, what a difference a few years make. I golfed here two years ago and the condition of this course has dropped off horribly. If you want to golf at a top notch course in the Niagara Region, there are numerous others in better condition than this. To suggest that this is a high class course and not offer GSP of any kind, sprinkler heads not marked with yardage, and no "course playbook", is disappointing (to say the least). The tee boxes were uneven and covered in divots, the greens were filled with ball marks, the fairways super soggy (during a summer of record low rain).
The high point was that I was greeted professionally by the Marshall and was provided an electric cart - but the battery was shot and barely got me up any of the holes on their "escarpment" course. When i ran into the Marshall again, he said to just swap it out at the turn. When I did, I got a 2nd cart with just as much power as the first.
The company motto is suggesting a "golf experience second to none". I'd recommend the owners of Kaneff Golf make a surprise visit and see just how poorly the condition of this course is in.
course was in fall condition
It was ok but was airraided & over seeded. Starter was not friendly & cart needed work done.
