Affordable but with a downside

Very affordable nine hole course at the site of a former vineyard staff was very friendly,

The course itself was in very rough shape very spotted fairways, Greens had dead sections and were otherwise very long you could basically putt any putt hard at the hole because it wasn't going to break significantly because it didn't roll straight

I got the impression that the greens keeping staff either isnt experienced or doesn't have the proper equipment and funding to make a real difference here course needs some serious love and dedication from an experienced green keeper with the funding to get the job done

Solid Layout, Shaky Conditions

This is a decent layout and entertaining to play. It’s a beautiful course, to be sure, in the attractive town of Pomfret, and the distant views get better with each fairway as you slowly climb the large hills, reaching the course pinnacle at tee seven. I walked it today, and it was strenuous but manageable. The sidehill lies on these fairways are a big part of this course’s defenses, along with some holes that play steeply uphill, greens placed on hillocks, and the average small size of the greens themselves. Then again, there’s the finisher, a hard par-3, where your tee shot must traverse the pond. Nothing less than an excellent strike will allow you to find land, and there’s a great feeling of satisfaction upon making this GIR.

It was an enjoyable round, but I found I couldn’t keep an accurate score around the inconsistent greens. I only wish the conditioning were improved, and what I found today was about the same as last summer. The course needs better irrigation/maintenance of the fairways (lots of crabgrass, clover, etc.) and the tees are pretty beat up overall. Greens suffer from too much patchiness, and I found most of my putts losing their lines. But the bright spot was the three or four bunkers on the course, which now have decent, relatively smooth white sand.

The atmosphere at Vineyard Valley has always been a friendly one.

Worst golf course I’ve played

Fairway is the equivalent of heavy rough on a well maintained course. Would give negative stars if possible. Save your money and just don’t golf here, wouldn’t make my worst enemy golf here.

Some Conditioning Woes

--Conditions were today’s story at VV. While nearly everything stayed about the same since my last, positive round in early July, the greens deteriorated significantly. They seem to have some sort of disease, although I’m no agronomist. In any case, because of the pock marks on nearly all of them, I couldn’t keep a legitimate score. Most of my putts were bouncing radically and many weren’t holding their lines. Hope they get these back soon.

--I really enjoy the scenery here. Great views of various parts of Pomfret. I drove past the Pomfret Green on the way home, and it has to be one of the most impressive small towns in Connecticut.

Amazing architecture is the norm.

--Service, as always, was excellent (flexible and personable, which speaks well for how GolfNow players are treated), and pace of play good. Parking lot was full when I arrived, even on this day before a tropical storm.

--Essentially, the hard-to-putt greens, both slow and very bumpy, hold Vineyard Valley back from a higher rating right now. It’s not the only Connecticut course to have suffered from some extreme conditions during summer 2021. The layout, however, is spacious--you can hit your driver regularly--and it’s still okay for tee-to-green play.

Ok course, Great Views

Cute little 9 hole course, conditions are certainly nothing to write home about. But this place has a great folksy vibe, and it’s perfect to get in a quick solo 9. Also, it was pouring rain and they sent us out in carts…never said path only or 90 degree or anything…that tells you a lot about the vibe here.

Fun course

The course was fun to play but with the rain we had for the past week it was very sloppy. Not there fault. The 9th was the most fun to play. I will be playing here again.

Scenic Venue and Forward Momentum

---Vineyard Valley has only a few sand traps and several very small greens (part of the challenge, maybe), but makes up for it with strong elevation changes on every hole but the watery ninth. Sidehill lies are often challenging.

--Best stretch of holes comes over the last four. Six is a strongly uphill five-par, followed by two steeply dropping par-4’s. The ninth requires an accurate iron shot as water surrounds 70% of the green (bail-out is in back).

--The views here are often incredible, especially on six and seven. The vista from the seventh tee is one of the most spectacular you may find on any Connecticut golf course. The nice routing also sports a pleasant openness overall.

--Conditioning has improved over last summer; still, grass was too long in the fairways and the greens ran slowly--but they’re no longer patchy in places. This is the one area that I believe would improve VV most.

--Friendliness and clubhouse environment adds up to a nice vibe at Vineyard Valley. The owner/manager goes out of his way to make you feel welcome. Had an event (tournament) here in the A.M. that was finishing up when I arrived. Golfers appeared to have had lots of fun.

--Positive experience today--enjoyed the round.

--Play it for the peaceful and secluded countryside setting, the vigorous layout, and the very good value. And you can swing a driver on seven holes. Great venue for family golf, a quick nine, or just to appreciate nature (saw four rabbits on the eighth) and the Connecticut hillsides.

--Love the foam alligator that sits on the right wall of the night green. Actually, though, it was the very loud bullfrogs in the pond that startled me.

General concern

Poison ivy surrounds most of the areas surrounding greens and fairways making errant shot ball retrieval risky.
