Windham Golf Course is tucked away in Connecticut's northeast corner, enjoying a classic New England setting. Formerly known as Willimantic C.C. and The University Club of Connecticut, the original nine holes opened in 1922 and the championship golf course that exists now was completed in the 1960s. Like many of the golf courses built during that time, The Windham Golf Course's greens are smaller than on modern golf courses and they are subtly contoured. The traditional layout also features narrow fairways lined with mature oak trees and there are three that are bordered by natural spring ponds. Bunkers are strategically placed on 15 holes. The front nine provides some scoring opportunities, which you'll need before facing the tougher back nine.

An Interesting Day

When I played the course, the area was in a state of drought. So it wouldn't be fair of me to judge the condition of the course, however, the greens were in reasonable shape and has a nice speed to them. All I all, not many straight putts on the course.

The course had a nice layout. With the drier conditions, I found the course to play harder than the rating and slope suggested.

My only disappointment on how the day went was In regards to the speed of play and overall tee time management by the starter. I was sent out as a single behind a 3-some, who were behind a 2-some, who were behind 3 4-somes. Another 2-some behind me. I think a better job could have been done to pair up some players so the round went more smoothly. At times, I waited close to 20 minutes between shots. And due to some of the blind shots on the course, I was narrowly hit by the group behind me. On the 18th tee box, I waited 35 minutes before being able to tee off: and 3 groups collected on the tee behind me.

Lastly, and probably the least significant of my feedback is how I only saw the drink cart on the 2nd hole and not again the entire round. It would have been fine on most days, but walking on a hot day, I definitely could have used a water on the back nine.

Overpriced and Underwhelming

This was an unfortunate experience, and I will not be back. The pace was great, but $75 with a cart for this course is a ripoff. If I paid $45, my experience would have been different, but when you price your course at a premium, the expectation is set, and this underwhelmed entirely. Patches everywhere, pooling water green side, not true sand, the driving range is 150 yards, etc. The lack of signage was confusing, and there’s not even hole layouts on the scorecard. 2 par 3s that played over 200 yards, and not even from the tips.

Big changes

I’m very happy that the new owner of this course is putting in the work it desperately needed. They have already made some great improvements, and I’m excited to see what’s next.

Need ranger

Good conditions and fairly priced.
Disrespectful patrons on cell phone for long time instead of hitting off 17th tee. No ranger.

Good shape for November golf

. The green’s and tee boxes are in great shape. Would say the fairways are good only because there is a some holes that they need to blow the leaves off but it was the weekend so they probably are blown off by now. For 25 dollars you can’t beat it would definitely play it again

Great Value and Greens in Very Good Condition

Course was in very good condition and greens were speedy. Great value for this time of year. Good pace of play as a single. Only issue was the leaves but that's New England golf for you.

In the Classic Mode

Windham offers textbook old-school golf: well-proportioned fairways that bend and swerve; greenside falloffs on either their sides or backs, plentiful bunkering, some big humps and a few chocolate drops, and finally subtle movement on and around the well-guarded greens. In the classical mode of, say, Walter Travis, some holes here will favor strong draws, others big cuts. Showing up in places are a couple of modernist features, as well. These include the pond which guards the front of green twelve, along with, at seventeen, some Pete Dye-like contouring--especially the greenside embedded bunker and falloff on the left. The Windham fairways are bordered mainly by mature, majestic oaks and pines. Except on the first few holes, you’ll feel quite secluded, apart from civilization.

The course’s routing starts with a few fairly tame holes, then toughens progressively. While the front nine is anchored by a stretch running from three through seven, all testy but fine holes, the inward half simmers until you reach fourteen, where things go pedal-to-the-metal right through the fine finishing hole. A couple of 200-yard par-threes punctuate these stretches (and the rest of the three-pars--6, 10, and 14--are hardly pushovers).

One of the most impressive holes here is the long, fairly brutal par-5 seventeenth. And wow, can it be punishing if misplayed! The key is to land your second shot well left, on the outside of the dogleg’s elbow. Some may disagree, but I like courses that have at least one monster hole like this one.

Conditions:
Not ideal, but still good. Fairways (some were patchy) and roughs good; greeside areas closer to average; greens very good with smooth surfaces. The fairways did not seem as manicured as they were when I played here last fall.

Playing experience:
Had a great time with my two playing partners (initials A. and J., a husband and wife who are pictured;) and our conversation never lagged. Very personable and friendly. as--by the way--were the staffers I met here in the pro-shop. The starter, too, was a gentleman and very helpful. Nice atmosphere, once again, at Windham!

Some conclusions:
From the standpoint of design, this ranks among the top older layouts across Connecticut. The terrain rolls beautifully here, and no two holes are alike; overall, my interest seldom wavered. Another bonus: longer hitters shouldn’t feel constrained about using their drivers regularly. This challenge is less about adventurous play and more about balance and good shot values; playing it well means being careful as well as hitting accurate full shots. You’ll also want to get the most from your short game around the greens.
