Scott Schreiner Municipal Golf Club
About
John Bredemus stopped off here in the 1920s to open up Kerrville’s first golf course. Originally private when it opened in 1923, the course was acquired by the city in the 1930s and the course remained public ever since.
Situated on gently rolling terrain, the course offers scenic views of the surrounding Texas hill country. R.D. Kizer and Joe Finger have had their hands in molding the layout, which features somewhat generous fairways and an interesting combination of mounded greens.
Bredemus designed the front nine, which is highlighted by the classic 592-yard par 5. This is a mean hole, with water cutting into the fairway twice and an elevated green that requires a perfect approach. The hole has character, with water along the right and an ominous-looking cliff framing the view. Another notable hole on the front is the dogleg-left No. 7, with trees dominating the left side.
The signature hole is No. 17, a 535-yard par 5. Water comes into play on the second shot and then again on the approach to the green, which is surrounded by water on three sides. A waterfall to the left of the green adds a pleasing aesthetic.
The back nine, which opened in 1977, is more forgiving than the front. The best hole is the tough, par 5 No. 17. If you survive the tee shot, water comes into play on both the second and third shots. The last shot is particularly pleasing because of the waterfall on the left side of the green.
Getting there : From I-10 west, take Hwy. 16 south and turn left on Country Club Dr.

Greens are in really bad shape right now. Fairways are pretty dry and hard as well. Course is usually in excellent condition but the lack of rain is really hurting it right now I guess
Greens
Course is fun and decent until you get on the greens. Putting more than three feet is very difficult. Hitting the ball hard enough to get to the hole and watching it hop across the green is brutal. Could use rain a couple of hours a day for about a month. Not sure what else they can do.
1st impression
Not a difficult course except for a few unique greens. Greens were on the slow side but in good shape. I will be playing this course again.
Start at hole 10?
Greens were a little slow that day but it makes it for a challenging game always a good time.. not sure what’s going on but they had us start at hole 10 instead of 1. I like it! I’ll play that way from now on! If it’s allowed.
Great 18 hole hill country muni. Usually a 5 star course but the lack of rain has it a little dry right now.
Overall good experience
Everything well with minor exception of the person checking in at the pro shop. Course didn’t look busy, I asked if there was any way I could play by my self (as it’s how I enjoy golf the most). He gave me a bit of attitude that I used a golf app to select my tee time, and those automatically pair you up. Keep in mind I didn’t ask rudely or demand to play alone, I only asked it if was a possibility. Nevertheless the person I played with was very nice (although a bit of a stickler for the rules). All that being said the course was much better than what I expected. Fairways were a bit hard in places but that can be expected due to the lack of rain for the last few months here in Texas
Golf
Enjoyed the round of golf. Late winter conditions, but nice layout and friendly staff.
