This southernmost course in Texas, despite its name, is actually situated on the mainland in Port Isabel. Architects Chris Cole and Stephen Caplinger carved an outstanding layout out of the wild native Gulf coast vegetation, with several holes bordering the Laguna Madre. The club has hosted the Texas Senior Open and the South Texas PGA Southern Championship since its opening in 1997.

The design features wide fairways bordered by native yucca, mesquite, and cactus, and the windy conditions often make it challenging to keep it in the fairway. Errant shots will be lost for sure. Others that fail to find the fairway will bury in waste areas and deep rough.

For the most part, the longer holes seem to play more downwind, while the shorter ones play into the wind. The large greens are of championship quality. Three of them are multi-tiered.

No. 5 is the feature hole, a picturesque, 335-yard, par 4 with a tee shot that must carry the Laguna Madre into a sharp dogleg-right fairway. On the back, No. 11 is unique because of the giant mesquite tree that dominates the middle of the fairway. Hole 12 can be interesting: it's a short par 3 that is completely surrounded by water.

The facility has plans for slow expansion based on how quickly the residential lots are developed. A second 18-hole course is under construction, with three holes complete. Designed by Chris Cole and Jeff Potts, this layout will feature only par 3 and par 4 holes and play to 5,400 yards.

Getting there : The club is on Hwy 100 before you cross over the causeway onto the island of South Padre. Turn right on FM 520 and continue for 2.5 miles to the course.

Great value for money

It’s a good course, it can be challenging, but not difficult. There’s short holes, especially the par 3s, but the wind can make them more difficult. There’s a few holes with a nice water view.

The only thing that they lack is to have a few carts selling food and beverages…the heat can get intense and even more so if you run out of water!

Improvement

Played this course 3 weeks ago and the greens were terrible, it’s amazing how much they have improved, should be in good shape in another two weeks. Course is scenic and a lot of fun.

Excellent course

This was an excellent course running through the middle of a subdivision. Great views across the bay. Course was in great shape, fast greens. Would definitely play again if in the area and would recommend.

What this course could be

We played South Padre Golf Course on Sunday, July 19. I had seen the reviews about the greens so I called before we booked. Even though the greens are all open, many of them are only half open. I understand they get so much play in the winter, being a coastal course, but the course is disappointing. Almost all of the traps are unplayable, which is strange being the course is on the coast. On top of that, $86 to play this course at this moment is a rip off.

Lousy greens

Although they’re trying to get their greens back in shape after losing them , they still have a long way to go. Not worth the money until they get their greens fixed.

Rough greens but good value

If a finicky golfer, the greens are in rough shape and will add strokes. That and wooden stakes across the fairway on 18 for no apparent reason (the carts gps restricted so bad you can’t get near the edge of a fairway let alone restricted area, so remove them!) can be That said the price was great and the staff friendly and helpful. So not too bad.

Not good…. Greens are mostly under repair..

Most of the greens had huge dead spots, tee boxes and fairways weren’t good either.

This place needs a lot of work. Money and staff to care for the course.

It’s really bad.

Pleasant golf game

We enjoyed the fairways and the folks we were partnered with and the staff. The greens were in pretty bad shape.

Worst Greens in the RGV

We played here in January and the greens were in pretty bad shape but they were working on them. Fast forward to mid April, they are worse. One of eighteen was decent, two were closed and you were putting on the fairway. Glad we didn’t pay full price. This course should be giving a for- warning and steep discounts until conditions are better. The GPS in the carts are also very annoying. Constantly binging and beeping at you even when you’re on the cart path. Haven’t seen a course yet with these systems that have them set up properly. Wish you could turn them off and just use my old golf buddy.
