South Padre Island Golf Club - 18 Holes Course

About
This southernmost course in Texas, despite its name, is actually situated on the mainland in Port Isabel. Architects Chris Cole and Stephen Caplinger carved an outstanding layout out of the wild native Gulf coast vegetation, with several holes bordering the Laguna Madre. The club has hosted the Texas Senior Open and the South Texas PGA Southern Championship since its opening in 1997.
The design features wide fairways bordered by native yucca, mesquite, and cactus, and the windy conditions often make it challenging to keep it in the fairway. Errant shots will be lost for sure. Others that fail to find the fairway will bury in waste areas and deep rough.
For the most part, the longer holes seem to play more downwind, while the shorter ones play into the wind. The large greens are of championship quality. Three of them are multi-tiered.
No. 5 is the feature hole, a picturesque, 335-yard, par 4 with a tee shot that must carry the Laguna Madre into a sharp dogleg-right fairway. On the back, No. 11 is unique because of the giant mesquite tree that dominates the middle of the fairway. Hole 12 can be interesting: it's a short par 3 that is completely surrounded by water.
The facility has plans for slow expansion based on how quickly the residential lots are developed. A second 18-hole course is under construction, with three holes complete. Designed by Chris Cole and Jeff Potts, this layout will feature only par 3 and par 4 holes and play to 5,400 yards.
Getting there : The club is on Hwy 100 before you cross over the causeway onto the island of South Padre. Turn right on FM 520 and continue for 2.5 miles to the course.

Greens
Course was in great shape. Would def visit again. Recommended to all my friends already!!
This course is getting back into great shape
After playing the course for full fee the last couple of years with dead t boxes and fairways land dead greens prior to that, the course is looking great from all angles. New Super, Mike Painter, has done a great job. I’m excited to watch this course continue to get better.
Needs better upkeep on greens
The layout is perfect but the maintenance of the greens needs better equipment and knowledge of care
Course is getting better. Overpriced. Dead after lunch as rates are too high to play in the heat. Place would be packed at 25-30 buck a round after lunch. Instead it's a handful of tourists playing at full rate. I don't get it. Are you listening owners?
Love this course
Never gets old playing here! Beautiful scenic views especially on front 9 makes up for a couple greens that need a little tlc due to lack of rain in area. Most greens are in incredible shape which again is a testament to the grounds crew here! Best time to play is late fall/winter. Playing yday in blazing heat is not for the weak.
Pricey
Jmo, but rates should drop for the summer. The course is dead after lunch. Seems like a few players at a good rate is better than only a couple of tourists paying championship golf prices. Been saying for years this course has great potential.
SPI return to form
SPI has returned to per Covid condition. Greens were recently verticut and roll true. Pace of greens were good. Fairways in great shape. Pleasure to play and nice to see it returning to its form pre Freeze in 2021.
Pleasure Time
Went out as a single, waited on the first hole for the 3 guys to clear the green. After that, no more waiting for the day. Course was in great condition, greens rolled true.
Vacation Golf
I was pleasantly surprised after seeing a not so favorable review on YouTube. No the course was not perfect condition but it was in much better condition than any course I have ever played in the same price range and there was a pop up when I mage reservation through GolfNow that “Course was under repair”. Course is not overly tight but there is Zero chance of finding a ball that gets passed the first rough! Greens were consistent and in really good condition.
The political stuff (convict supporters)from Marshalls should be banned. It's golf.
