South Padre Island Golf Club - 18 Holes Course
About
This southernmost course in Texas, despite its name, is actually situated on the mainland in Port Isabel. Architects Chris Cole and Stephen Caplinger carved an outstanding layout out of the wild native Gulf coast vegetation, with several holes bordering the Laguna Madre. The club has hosted the Texas Senior Open and the South Texas PGA Southern Championship since its opening in 1997.
The design features wide fairways bordered by native yucca, mesquite, and cactus, and the windy conditions often make it challenging to keep it in the fairway. Errant shots will be lost for sure. Others that fail to find the fairway will bury in waste areas and deep rough.
For the most part, the longer holes seem to play more downwind, while the shorter ones play into the wind. The large greens are of championship quality. Three of them are multi-tiered.
No. 5 is the feature hole, a picturesque, 335-yard, par 4 with a tee shot that must carry the Laguna Madre into a sharp dogleg-right fairway. On the back, No. 11 is unique because of the giant mesquite tree that dominates the middle of the fairway. Hole 12 can be interesting: it's a short par 3 that is completely surrounded by water.
The facility has plans for slow expansion based on how quickly the residential lots are developed. A second 18-hole course is under construction, with three holes complete. Designed by Chris Cole and Jeff Potts, this layout will feature only par 3 and par 4 holes and play to 5,400 yards.
Getting there : The club is on Hwy 100 before you cross over the causeway onto the island of South Padre. Turn right on FM 520 and continue for 2.5 miles to the course.

Golfer Reviews
Rude staff
Got treated like crap the second we entered the premises. They said my shirt didn't meet course requirements even though it's the same shirt Tiger wore at the Masters. Then some course ranger accosted us at the 1st green demanding the see a receipt we didn't have. So we said screw it and we left. They wouldn't refund our round either because I booked on Golf Now, so that was $150 down the drain. Will never play at that trashy course filled with rude employees EVER again.
Expected more
The price is high and the golf course conditions are very bad. Greens are well and some fairways. However there are areas without maintenance. The type of grass varies between holes.
The only reason to play again is because of distance to SPI.
SPI golf
This is the only golf course on SPI we play it every summer while visiting SPI. Tee Times at 11: 54 was extremely hot with heat index above 105 however clouds roiled in on the back nine which made it bearable. We did not see any other players until the back 9 and it slowed extremely. We were a 3 some and waited on a 3 some on every hole on the back.. we saw the Marshall twice but play was still very slow.. The greens are slow & looked a little rough. Rates are too high for the quality. Of the course.
Best public course in the valley
Good course layout and maintained reasonably well. Nice club house and amenities. Golf carts are comfortable, nice greens and decent fairways. Great views of the Launa Madre bay!
spi golf
check in went fine when we got to the starter on first hole no record of our time he did let us out but not at our tee time. do not plan on using golf now again
Great well managed course
The golf course is great. Pro shop staff not the friendliest. We have golfed this course for the past couple of weeks and the previous staff were much more friendly. Not sure if it was because we got a deal or if this particular staff member was having a bad day!
Quality course for all levels of skill
Played with a group and due to several tees all skill level could enjoy the round. Course has a great layout with many interesting hole
Day at SPI GC not spoiled by windy weather
Enjoyed the day at SPI. Given the time of year, it was in pretty good condition particularly the green complexes. Sand traps were exceptionally well maintained. Would certainly look to play it again in less-stressful weather and I'm sure it would be even more enjoyable.
Enjoyable Day
Found it to be in better shape than when I played it in years past. Greens putted true
Course
The course is fine; slow play is a problem and the course Marshall’s are friendly but they don’t do anything about the slow play! The ball washers are lacking water and towels; if you mention your concerns to the people in the pro shop, they say “talk to the marshalls”....as a guest paying to play, I don’t believe that’s my job! Somebody manages the place, so let them make it be right!!!
Course Condition
I would expect this excellent course to be more beautiful as Landscaping continues. All traps are excellent. Greens good but with improvements ongoing would expect them to be excellent in 6 weeks with weather cooperation. Fun layout challenging but fair. Playing the tips is like a different course. Notice they now have forward tees for the more recreational or senior golfer. Fun time!!
Great Course!
Played the course today and really enjoyed the course. Fairways were a little wet but the greens were in great shape. Every time I come to the valley and come to SPL I will always come back!! Thanks for a great time!!
Very good course with multiple tees
Very good course with multiple tees to suit different skill levels. I have played multiple times over the years and current conditions are the best In years
