Rating 74.1

Ridgeview Ranch is a Jeff Brauer design that opened in 1997. It’s friendly to the average golfer because there are rarely forced carries of water or sand to reach the large greens, making short approaches good candidates for easy ups and downs.

The design rolls through hills and trees, incorporating two creeks that come into play. The fairways are average-sized and flat, although there are a few surprising elevation changes for this flat part of north Texas. The course rolls through a housing addition and some of the holes are very tight.

Nos. 7 and 11 stand out in particular. The 7th goes 161 yards over White Rock Creek to a sloping green. No. 11 is tough because is plays well over 400 yards uphill into the prevailing wind.

Other notes: Carts are mandatory on weekends before 2 p.m. The cemetery next to the No. 3 green has graves dating back to 1800 and a historical marker to commemorate the settlers commissioned by Stephen F. Austin.

Getting there : From Dallas, travel north on the Tollway and exit Spring Creek. Turn right and drive 5 miles to Independence. Turn left and drive north to Ridge View Dr., then take a right and the course is on the left.

Course is excellent

Fairways, greens and tee boxes are excellent. Better than they have been in quite some time. Carts are barely adequate. Changed out two carts during round.

NO WATER on course for DRINKING. Saw the beverage cart twice. Cart staff was friendly. Staff inside were civil. No ball washers.

Greatly Improved Condition

Played a few years ago and course was in need of some TLC. It apparently got some. From tee to green, everything was much improved, especially the greens.

The layout is pretty wide open, but the undulating fairways make for some challenging lies. It’s a lot of fun to play.

Biggest negative was the cart situation. They are very dated and worn down, and most hadn’t been cleaned. We had the first tee time of the day, and the few carts that were brought out still had trash in them from the day before.

It was also a surprise that the whole course was cart path only, but it wasn’t apparent why (pro shop staff didn’t even mention it, just saw the many signs stating such). If it wasn’t for that, we would have played significantly faster.

Finally showing some real progress

I have played Ridgeview 100s of times since it opened in '96. One my favorites up until Covid hit. A Jeff Brauer early design, and an incredibly fun and fair course to play with surprising terrain changes for North Plano. It had been over 2 years since I played it owing to really poor conditions, namely the greens. Decided to go, having heard that the conditions were greatly improved. I was very surprised. Perfect Bermuda greens yesterday with very few imperfections at all. And they actually had a bit of speed to them at times, which was a pleasant change compared to a lot of tracks around DFW lately. Fairways were acceptable but can still use some work here and there but nothing to get overly down about. Traps were perfect as well despite the fact newer golfers have decided to rarely rake them. We played a threesome and finished right at 4 hours with very minor waits here and there. Golf carts still need to be replaced but ours held in there for the round. Still no water on the course so make sure you load up before heading out (Just mind blowing you don't have water on the course, owners). Also, be careful to watch for serious soil erosion drop offs near alot of the cart paths and even the range. These are a potential ankle or knee injury risk waiting to happen. It's minor details like this that are needing the work at this point. But that's the biggest change in the last 5 years with public courses. The tee sheets are mostly full and they don't spend on upkeep like this at all. At some point, owners will realize if they just went a bit beyond "good enough", there are serious golfers who would pay an extra 15-20% for it. Ridgeview is at least playable and pretty enjoyable again. Give it shot.

In good shape

Course conditions are very good at the moment. The greens are much better than Twin creeks. Among the courses in the area Ridgeview seems to be in the best shape.

Course is long but the layout is pretty straight generally here.

Huge improvements from past years.

Nice Course | Not Enough Carts

First time playing the course. Overall, really enjoyed the course. Really good shape for this time of year. Moderately challenging. There were not enough carts available, had to wait for players to finish their rounds for a cart which put out group behind. No rangers on the course and there was a group of 6 slowing play, took about 5 hours. I'd definitely go back but need to get the cart situation corrected.

It's been better

The course has been in better condition, the yard matters were maintained and cart signs were in place to keep people from driving to the green.

Should be able to order food while playing (at the turn)

Good value

What you see is what you get on the course. Staff very friendly. Good mix of holes.

Carts were in terrible shape--significant weakness of the overall experience.
