Tanglewood Resort Hotel and Conference Center

About
Ralph Plummer worked with Arnold Palmer on the original Tanglewood design back around 1970, and Ken Dye and Baxter Spann came along for an upgrade in 1988. This challenging golf course overlooking Lake Texoma is difficult because of the water and wind. Be ready when you arrive, because the first two holes can ruin your day. Some say that no. 1 is the hardest on the golf course, playing 414 yards into a dogleg that's protected by a fairway bunker. No. 2 is longer at 444 yards -- you'll need a monster tee shot to set up a reasonable approach into the bunkered green. This hole has a slight dogleg to the left as well. On the back nine at Tanglewood, no. 14 goes 230 yards with water on the right, and no. 18 is a reachable par 5 with water in play on the first two shots.

Course conditions
I really didn't care for them sanding the greens,I understand preventive maintenance needs to be done and it really did not affect the pace of putts.
H20
You would think a golf course built on the banks of Lake Texoma would have no problem watering their course I guess sense SEOSU is not playing matches this year they decided to ration water. Terrible
Course review
The greens were in great shape, the course layout was fine, and overall the fairways need more water, but for this time of year in Texas not bad
Clearly they are having money problems
I played this course last year and like it. Played it last week and it was pathetic. They have not watered in weeks, if not months. Greens are not even green, let alone the fairways. Way behind on mowing as well. Just not kept up. Seen metro area courses during the winter that are in better shape.
Guess the locals like it because while I was by myself and only saw one other person the whole round, when coming up #9 there had to have been 50-75 players all queued up at the parallel #1 hole. Anyway, to drive an hour to get there...not worth it if that is to be expected from now on. Waited a good 10 minutes at the pro shop for someone to check me in. One person was running the shop and the snack bar. Range was overrun as well. Only good thing about the day was unlimited range balls as part of the green fee.
Good Value
Great conditions, but the pace of play was slow. Local members were out in a grouping of about 30 players.
Good Value but slow with local member game.
This is a really nice golf course but there are many member games played M-F with about 20-30 members making play really slow. Many members live just off the course.. Play is a 4-hour minimum.
Good Value
This course is best to be played during the week, but there are some quirky effects from locals. There are a lot of club members who live on the course and they have their weekly matches/gatherings. If you get out in front of these you are OK, If not, you will be miserable, especially in the heat. The greens have been recently punched and sanded, and they have slowed a bit, but they are still about the best around the area. I would give this course an 8 out of 10.
Most greens were firm, fun layout. I would say it needed a fresh mow the cuts weren’t as clean as they could be and the same for the tee boxes. Free range balls with round and snack shop open with cart coolers, will come back for sure
Blisteringly Hot!
First time to play the course and it was fun. The layout is challenging, uses the terrain well and has enough length, risk reward, trees, and water to make things interesting. My only real complaint are the greens. The were recently punched and haven't been well taken care of since. The didn't putt well and that cost strokes. I will play this course again, hopefully when the weather isn't so hot, and the greens are in much better shape.
I know about playing golf in Texas in mid summer, but this was awful. Over 100 degrees, over 90% humidity, and absolutely no wind to speak of. Couple that will the fact that all the drinking water is removed from the course and there was no cart service, made for a difficult day. This rule about removing water from the course is the dumbest safety precaution that has been implemented yet.
Decent, not special
Fine course, but nothing outstanding. The 18th hole is cool - it's a par 5 that wraps around water the entire way. Everything else is pretty blah. Not in great shape. The range was our first indication, not tightly mowed at all, and the fairways were the same. Greens were fine, not great, but fairly smooth except for a few spots here or there. We drove all the way from Frisco (about 50 mins) thinking it would be a little more well kept and "resort style". For the money - $45 on golf now on a holiday, it was worth it. But otherwise I wouldn't make the drive unless you live closer than we do.
Convenient
Overall the travel was conveniently located to me locally, and I have played there before I already knew it would be in good condition, and at the time I went knew it wouldn't be crowded.
Great course for any level of play
Very nice layout, wide fairways and great views..
On this day some greens had been sanded but still mostly playable
18 is a very tough finishing hole, one of the toughest in the area
A Trip up North
From Collin Co, this is a bit of a drive, but a nice one. This is a nice, fair course. A few holes are tough, but most are playable. Having range balls available is a nice perk and much appreciated. I just wish the first fairway didn't have a hundred range balls everywhere.
TIP: Hit an orange ball off the first tee. Downside? Not on the golf end. The clubhouse, snack bar, patio, is just so, 1970's. There are so many locals that love coming out here, it would be great to have a nice deck, with more nicer tables and chairs. The F&B selection for a 'Resort', I'm sorry but it is shameful. Go to The Tribute and check theirs out. They own the after the round experience. Just a thought to create a better overall experience. Hey, people may stay longer and spend more money.
Nice course layout, needs a little more care
Made the hour drive up to Texoma to play here first time on a Wednesday. Like the course. Most holes seem secluded, not many holes have houses near. The tee boxes were in poor shape. Fairways and greens both rather dry and hard. Greens not bad but a little bumpy. Was somewhat crowded when we arrived, but most had teed off by our early after tee time. Pace of play was great. Didnt even see many other golfers all day. Let one pair play thru, never waited on anyone. There were many Canadian geese on the course, which left gifts in many places on the course. Was quiet, peaceful. Enjoyed the round. Slightly disappointed with condition. Would consider playing again.
