The Heron Country Club - Heron/Hawk

About
Previously known as South Essex Golf Club - Heron/Hawk.
South Essex Golf and Country Club lies mainly facing south in the southern sunshine. The panoramic views over the Thames Valley and Kent are truly magnificent. The three courses Hawk, Vixen and Heron, the greens and practice range have been designed with spaciousness and nature in mind and have blended into the established gently rolling landscapes. The beautiful bluebell carpeted woodlands have been used in the layout, undisturbed except for the pleasant walks from the greens to the tees.

Top quality course
Very good and challenging course, got stuff behind a tournament day but that can happen anywhere.
Greens are amazing and holes are all challenging and different to provide great variation
Improved over the years
I used to be a member of this course in the 1990's to 2015. It was always good but the condition could vary quite a bit with issues with the bunkers in particular at the time and Clubhouse a bit run down. Now the course and facilities are much smarter. Some minor changes to the course have helped and the bunkers were better. The drought had taken its toll on the fairways with virtually zero rainfall round here for 4 months, so that was understandable but the greens were pretty good taking that into account. So decent improvements all round - but at a cost, the normal green fees are way to high for what it is. The twilight price is about right though, so if you can do that it is worth it.
Heron Golf Club
Slightly higher price than expected for a twilight @£35 ( same as a full members club (Romford for example) but having said that greens were great, true & pretty quick. Fairways little burnt like everywhere at the moment but we're consistent to pkay from. Staff very welcoming. Good layout & mix of holes, overall good venue
A frustrating round of golf
No start Marshall, players (perhaps first time visitors) starting from the wrong course resulting in a log jam as groups were redirected to their correct start 9 hole course.(Hawk / Heron). Took longer to finish the round, disruptive and frustrating. As for the course, reasonable condition but a number of greens certainly need attention. Overall, a disappointing experience.
Golf
We teed off just before 5pm but soon realised that most behind us were in buggies so had to left a 2 ball through.
The course was a bit samey & the bunkers were stony & not the best. Little or no direction to each next hole which was very annoying.
A good local course but there are better ones around.
The bar area was nice & barman was very accommodating.
Twilight golf
Course is great condition, pace of play was excellent for a Twilight,
Improving all the time
The quality of the course and the venue is improving all the time and the friendliness of all the staff remains as excellent as it has been for some time now…
Lovely days golf
Played Courses heron / hawk both in good condition and great test of golf . Staff were very friendly and efficient, upstairs bar area and patio are lovely places for post and pre round drinks and banter.
Frozen - why didn't the club advise in advance on the day?
Really annoyed that when I called the club on the day to check the tee time (Golf Now and email confirmations were not aligned), the club pro shop simply confirmed the time. They failed to mention that the course was not as playable due to frozen fairways and greens and worse than that, it was carry only - so my playing partner and I had to lug around trolley bags. Not impressed with the service - we should have been offered a refund and to not play given the conditions were so bad that any shot near a green would bounce up 50 feet plus in the air as ground was like concrete. I love this course, but they really let themselves down on the day, and will put me off returning any time soon.
